laryngitis or not, the finale from this show is magic, just watch her pull those last notes up out of the floor! Miles better than the bulk of the show(taped days before this)...
She wore the last outfit in I Could Go On Singing, although she didn't sing in it.
I read in a biography that she trashed her dressing room after this Palace show because she was pissed that "they" made her go on with a horase voice. After that, no more evening television shows for her except the Tonight Show a couple of times in '68.
I still have the newspaper clipping from the day she died. As an eleven year old I didn't know she had such a wild ride of a life. I just liked her.
She looked gorgeous! Love that last outfit she wore. The best part was her performance of "by myself" love that song and yes she is still is the greatest talent to ever walk the planet.
Judy was simply the Greatest Entertainer Ever! No one before or since has been able to use so much emotion, give so much of their soul in performance. So under-appreciated, then and now.
She was so superb here it's hard to believe they didn't give her a standing ovation. I nearly applauded and I'm at work. But 7:40 made me burst out laughing so I managed to express myself somehow----maybe it's 7:30 but it's the part where the cheery announcer extolls bufferin because "it doesn't add any extra drugs to your bloodstream...!!"
"By Myself" is so riveting & intense here and Judy threw herself in to this classic with such realism that it is devastating to watch and experience...nobody could put so much soul in to a performance like Miss Garland & love the way she moved around on those heels & that in itself was amazing and fascinating to watch...Bravo Judy!!!
Judy, isnt a B'way performer. She doesn't to the Jazz hands and the Liza moves. MGM polished Just to perform in the best possible way. Judy isnt campy or hammy. She goes out there and rips our hearts out and we scream for more! :) This is a Legend!
If people think she is "on something" then she pulls off this performance walking around in those 4 1/2 inch high heel shoes. If she was wasted, she wouldn't have stood up and move around the way she did.
liza's voice now sounds like this, you may want to blame it on the age of the audio slurring, but in truth both ladies at this point have their voices shot !
liza voice was never as good as here mothers judy had resonance liza just growled a song out. no idea to put it into up into the head not the throught.
@etrax2000 i really think she was just having an -off- night... because i've heard quite a few of her performances from around this time; and though most sound like this; she still had the ability to keep her voice in control and sing a song beautifully... but i think she'd either drink or take pills before a lot of performances from this period; which, combined with excessive smoking in her down-time, lead to a very rough sound...
Interesting to see her final prime time USA tv appearance but one. She trashed her dressing room and was banned by all three networks. Her only other appearance was on a Jack Paar special. Shame as she made 8 appearances in the 65-66 season and was slated for a few more. Such talent frittered away by self destrutive traits boggles the mind.
What a gifted comedienne too! Loved how she couldn't see the words and ad libbed the rest. that is what makes all the fans rally and soar with her when things dont as staged. She is a gifted performer. I had to laugh the other night on the tv show " The Insider" when they interviewed those two hacks spencer pratt and Heidi Montage. Heidi told the panal that 1 billion people and fans tuned in to watch her on the Miss Universe Pagent. LMAO! Star jones said "wrong they tuned in to see the pagent.
You have to laugh at the morons who constantly find fault with Judy Garland. Not one person living or dead came across to their audience the way Judy did. To all the Hecklers out there, If you don't like her performing then dont type in her name and you wont have to worry about if she was "high" etc. Leave this LEGEND to her true fans .. I am not only a fan of her Celebrity but of the entire Person who was JUDY GARLAND! Sing on Judy! If anyone out there can do better? try!
Wonderfully put! I couldn't agree more. Anyone who intentionally bashes Judy Garland can go die for all I care. That sounds harsh but what idiot would dare judge someone with such talent? And who would try to insult somebody who is passed on? I find it mind boggling!
She's brilliant! I love By Myself, I thought that was a fab performance, I'd like to see all you who slag it off or call it "rough" sing it better. (Actually, probably not as you blatantly couldn't)
I agree. This is the vocally the weakest version of this sound I've heard to date, but there is something incredibly moving, if not eerie, in her last 'by myself'...it's like she screaming into an existential vaccuum...more to herself than to the audience. I have never heard a singer capable of delivering such a raw and chilling performance.
its not the last by myself i have a cd of judy at JFK 1968 singing it ,the last note bends in pitch . from the audiance comes.. i came from new york to see you . she said "I came from new york to see you too"
"By Myself"--- stunning. The voice was a bit rough, but this is a soul laid bare, and an awesome performance. I defy anyone to watch her do that 2nd song and not be holding your breath and sitting on the edge of the chair by the end of it. I wish the original tape of this could be released on DVD. Any possible chance of that, I wonder? Thank you for posting. This is great stuff, historical footage from over 40 years ago that still holds up today.
yes, despite her voice being a bit rough round the edges, this performance (that last "..by myyyseeellllllfff" is amazing!)is truly electric in its delivery. I for one think all of Judy's TV appearances should be collated and put onto DVD format and preserved for future generations to marvel at. She was truly a one-off.

This electrifying performance of By Myself comes through my tiny laptop screen. I can only imagine being there in person.
