  • @cycloneDJ1, any dslr camera can do panning but some limitations

  • Mark . how about Nikon D5100 ? can that DSLR do panning ? -im malaysian-

  • can i do panning with my 18-55 vr kit that came with my d3100?

my lens is not that long as what you said @ 1:46

  • @knaayi yes you can do it!

  • @knaayi If you zoom in to 55mm, get closer to your subject (if you can, of course) then why not?

The 18-55 is a great lens! You just need to learn to master it. I still use it 90% of the times =]

  • well, something missing i guess. When you slow your shuter speed will need to compensate with and high aperture. Or you´ll get burned images :D think it was the only thing that missed in the movie of panning photos. Great explanation Mark, you movies are pretty awesome! keep them going!

  • Mark, great video, very informative, thanks. I have a question: whether panning by hand or on a tripod, do you recommend leaving Image Stabilization on or off?

  • By far the best tutorial I have seen on panning! Thank you!

  • Hi I have one question. When you are suggesting to use Center Autofocus Point, are you refering to Center Weighted Metering? I have a Nikon D7000 and I am new to photography. Thanks for any help.

  • Comment removed

  • @babarku Metering is different. On my canon I have 9 autofocus points.. They are in the shape of an oval and a point in the center of the oval. They appear when you press the shutter button halfway. If you select the manual mode.. you can actually select any of the 9 autofocus points and take a picture.... Not sure if the graphic would come out ok but this is how the autofocus points look like on my canon: 0 0 0

    0 O 0 0 0 0

    Hope that helps.

  • Love your simple directions, my try my photos turned out awesome thank you.

  • hey great video but how do you do an image where there is one person who does and action such as running but there is multiple of them showing their path but there is only one background.

    please help me thanks

  • i'm learning a lot from ur tutorials... panning is pretty difficult for me. I mean waay difficult. i cnt seem to get in sync with my subject's speed and the speed of me following the camera...

is it ok if i embed your vid to my blog. I blog about my learnings from photography as im a noob.

  • i was looking for this tutorial! thanks

but is panning possible with 18-55m lens?

  • @cureduser: yes i want to know that as well please answer this question mark :)

  • @thalidomide01

hi i tried it myself it works pretty well :)

  • i know he's changing the shutter, what about the aperature?

  • yeah indeed ..its once piece of a good advice .. thanks a lot Mark

  • What if my nikon doesn't have the centered autofocus mode?

    I have the nikon d3000.

Would I still get effective results!

  • Does Canon have Continious Drive mode? i cant find it plz reply :(

  • One person cannot figure this method out...or doesn't have a camera!

  • can the ge x5 do that

  • Very helpful tutorial Mark. The best I've seen so far.

  • Quick question.... actually 2 questions.

1.If you HAD to choose between a Canon or Nikon which would you choose?

    2. My friend and I were disgusting about lens. I was saying to get a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM and he was saying to get Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG APOMacro HSM II my question is what would the MAIN difference between these two lenses. And which one would you choose?

  • @blackhalk555 I know your 1st question is for mark so I won't be answering that. I can surely answer your 2nd question.. :)

You should go Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM instead of Sigma because of these few reasons:

Canon got better glass, body material. While photography you can see minor differences in quality. Canon'll outrun Sigma.. :)

    Cheers..

  • @blackhalk555

you better be looking at Olympus mate

great camera, extremely weathersealed, and wonderfully made Zuiko Lenses

just rather matrix marketing, which makes 80% of the world population doesn't even know about that brand

    haha

  • very detail video...thanks bro..

  • That first bicyclist was in Tempe!

    These videos are awesome BTW.

  • Very informative video,thank you!!

  • best panning tute video.. :)

  • nice

  • very nice video.....thanks!

  • love this video. great

  • Love that setup !! :))

    nikon is da best!

  • is a shutter speed of 1/4000 faster than 1/2500 ?

  • @locosrayo Yes. It's 1/4000 of a second.

  • what happens if your focus is slow????

    cuz i got a nikon d3000 with a tamron lens 70-300mm

  • You are awesome Mark!

  • Very informative stuff.

  • Mark, you're the best.

  • Hi Mark, I currently shoot with a Nikon D200, and I was just wondering what I need to achieve a contracted pupil when shooting indoors with strobe lighting. Thank you in advance! :)

  • Thanks again Mark for this clearing video

  • Thanks for all the info Mark. Great tips as always.

  • nice tips Mark!!! I always shop at Adorama!!!

  • I tend to do rolling shots with cars while riding in another car. A nice rule that helps me is pay attention to the speed of the car. If you are traveling at 60mph, shoot at 1/60. 100mph, 1/100, 30mph, 1/30. That helps as a good starting point.

  • @darkangelfire Great advice! Thanks. :)

  • @darkangelfire What about kilometers?

  • @redmaze14 Just multiply by 2/3. For example, 100 km/h -> ~1/60s. (I haven't tested but that's the rough figure I got from mph to kph)

  • @darkangelfire what shutter speed is good for F1?

i never photographed one, and im going to :D

Just 3 days before grand prix in melbourne :D

  • @DVL1507 I have shot a few drift events and rally, but nothing as fast as F1. Best advice is get a good lens, a tripod, and test. Start at 1/100 and follow with the cars, and go from there.

  • @darkangelfire

okay, my dad is buying me an Olympus E5 with 50-200 SWD

is that enough for shooting F1?

also, i dont have a tripod at the moment, only a gorillapod :D

I could switch the image stabilizer to certain modes that the Y axis did not move right? does that gives a good panning image?

ive tried shooting cars passing by the road near my house, sometimes i get it, sometimes not

its very hard for me :D

anyway thx a lot for your reply :D

  • @DVL1507 I am not familiar with that camera, I am a Nikon man myself. The gorillapod will be useless for this (atleast for me it would be). Just shoot on manual mode, and keep trying. For me, when I am stationary, shooting a car passing by trying to get that blurred background, it can take me 20 or so images before I get a good one. Just keep at it, I am sure you will be ok. You won't get the cars ever time, and the slower the shutter speed, the harder it is.

  • @darkangelfire this works fine for mph, how about kmph? Would it still work though

  • @Dragon4eva Well, I guess it is time to do math. 1mph is roughly 1.6kph.

  • Mark when did you switch to a nikon? Also what about switching the Lens from normal VR to active VR?

  • @coolshotimagery I primarily shoot with my Canon gear. For sports shooting I was able to try out the Nikon D3s (I LOVE it) and decided to use it for this video. I recently got the 1D Mark IV and will be giving a review. I also shoot with my trusty Mamiya. I'm not big on brand wars - I try to use the best tools available. :)

  • @snapfactory And the VR question? I think its VR mode 1 for panning, mode 2 is for shooting from moving vehicles, is that right? Also, what's the equivalent IS mode for Canons?

  • @Hynee VR mode Normal is for panning on a Nikon. VR mode Active is if you are in a moving vehicle on a Nikon. The equivalent for Canon is Image Stabilization modes 1 & 2 respectively. Don't forget to turn VR or IS off when on a tripod!

    Happy Shooting!

  • @snapfactory Lucky you, lol! ;)

  • @snapfactory You didn't answer the question about VR to Active VR?

  • @coolshotimagery... When shooting panning images, you'll want to keep the VR mode in Normal. Normal mode will compress any up & down motion that you introduce from hand shake but it will not compress the left to right motion. This is the motion you'll want to see in the image, which gives the appearance of motion. Active mode is only used when you, the photographer, are moving. An example would be if you were in a moving vehicle & were trying to track a subject and wanted to freeze the action.

  • The Nikon looks good in your hands, Great video

  • @ProPhotoHouston02

the nikon would be look good in my hands too :D
