  • One of the best...

  • Ilayaraja- what a great legend, genius

  • I wish Raja sir and Mani sir join hands again... The most excellent combination shattered because of ego problems.. We are the losers now... :( :(:

  • @SSS1034 mm.............all credits to that so called ' EGO' .................... otherwise we wouldn't have got a chance to see a legend Like Rahman! so Jai Ho Mani u made the correct choice ................ sorry all Raja fans excuse me.

  • @kamnaWR10 yeah she acted in a telugu movie "oye"..it was an an average flick and guess what....she dies in that movie too!!!

  • I heard Shamili acted in a telugu movie as an adult.Anyone how the movie performed? Frankly,if Im in her place,I dont think I would pursue acting as an adult. No matter what ppl will always see her as Anjali and that would be really difficult for her to break out.Btw anyone know what Anu(anjali's sister) is doing now? Anjali is her first and last movie? If so then it is such a waste of talent..

  • Its just amazing how a song would bring so much of memories.I was born in the year the movie was released but i grew up listening to it.truly great how a movie would just stir up your soul..And to think that I used to think baby shamili was actually a special child and she was not acting.Still wondering how Mani made it so believable. And performances by Tarun and his sister is just great. So subtle, innocent and pure. But now, none of the new movies leave any impact such as this movie. How sad..

  • A melodious song in '' Maand Raaga ''

  • this movies is way before E.T

  • @adripsu E.T was made in 1982, Anjali was made in 1990.

  • @Vathanan ok i was wrong about that... :D

  • u don't have to understand the lyrics to fall in luv with this classic.. Raja sir @ his best.!!

  • my all time favourite movie...i must 7 or 8yrs old wen i watched tis movie for the first time..

  • @samsa24 me also watched this movie when I am 8 years old. Till now I haven't watched it again. But the story is still in my heart like a bad dream.

  • great song

  • anjali(E.T), nayagan, thalapathi (godfather)

  • @jagpxl Anjali- Et,,are u joking,,OMG,,U r saying this just because they carry her on the front carrier of the cycle ..LOL..OK then where is the alien?????,,,LOL..U r so funny.

  • Awesome movie and a classic IR number in the raga Shankarabharanam in his 500th movie. Raja kaiya vecha, wronga ponadhilla :-)

  • Out of all Mani ratnam's movies i think this is the best..then thalapthi..i think mani and ilayaraja made clssics that many composers couldnt even reach their limits. I wish they join back together.. this song is my fav.. really love it. and the ending part when she dies i cried so much. i was only 6 or 7. and i asked my mum why she must die. really a superb movie. Unlike the stupid enthiran and other bullshit these days. enthiran was a piece of shit despite the technology it wasnt even a story.

  • looooooooll

  • a milli a milli a milli a millionaire

  • im malaysian....malay....love this movie n this song....since i was child and i always remember the song....(eventhough i dont know the meaning)..... i love the sad part.....

  • this movie deserves Oscar....

  • This film was released in 1989....I really like this film, its amazing that something so old can still capture your imagination. Its great that you can find these classics online.

  • INSPIRED BY E.T. WAT THIS GIRL IS DOING NOW CAN ANYBODY TELL?PLS

  • @jagpxl

she became a heroine in telugu movies, but not successful.

  • @jagpxl inspired from E.T? i never heard about it before.. anyway this movie is way better than E.T. thats for sure.

  • @kumarslvr1 This movie is not inspired from ET, that Hollywood movie was about an alien and kids, entirely a different story, only a small scene of a song in the movie where the kids fly into the space with the bicycle is similar to E.T.

  • @ranjither123 yes ive seen the movie ET too, and they are not similar indeed.. Just got a little confused when a frnd here commented that it was inspired from it.

  • INSPIRED BY E.T

  • Thats actually an angel at 3:30

  • Awesome movie... Get influenced by quality people... Not by Vijay.

  • Is this one of the earliest instances of product placement in Tamil Cinema and indeed Indian cinema? Have their been earlier instances of product placements. or was the Arun Ice cream display just incidental and not deliberate. Would love to know. What is the earliest instance of product placement in Indian cinema. Would make a good quiz question!

  • i still might cry

  • Nostalgia...old memories....want to go back to childhood and enoy life again...Ilayaraja sir.. Without U my childhood and teenage wouldnt have been so enjoyable

  • Many years ago i watched this movie when i was kid. Today i am 25. Till now i just remember only song like 'Anjali Anjali.... Pyari Anjali.'

    idup mani sir

  • amazing composition by great team and my childhood fav song all time favorite

  • The most welcoming state in the Union to this date, and the most dynamic in India as well. What we pioneered in TN as far movies go whether techincally, or specific movie making is unparallel in India...

  • makes me cry even now..... memory is a time a place and a feeling all coming together... it does so with this song and every time I listen to this song a sadness comes over me that move me to tears or mixed emotions... I cant describe it...

  • i saw this movie in 1989 i think i was 14 yrs. cried a lot. i dotn even know the name of ilayaraaja then but i felt the music was outof the world.

  • still my fav movie......i cried towards the climax....

  • @Mlak 555, dude i agree that this was a great film, but why bring up aamir khan in this. Even aamir is a pioneer in indian cinema, even mani ratnam would agree that, Just becoz he re-made ghajini in hindi doesn't mean that he copies tamil cinema. Infact he has done movies like TZP, lagaan, Sarfarosh, dil chahata hai, RDB, rangeela, and so many other movies which are also as good as some tamil movies if not better. I mean can any director in tamil cinema make lagaan once again?.

  • Nothing beats this song .. whenever I check for good tamil songs , i make it a point to listen and watch .. The masters at their best !!! TAMIL CINEMA ROCKS ...

  • I was 10 yrs while this movie released...just hearing these songs I'm pushed to those golden days...Music is the best part, raj sir is great.. the beats are challenging few beats we hear today... and I like the dance in this movie they would have tried little bit MJ's style.. obviously you cant match MJ...but the choreographer bad definitely had MJ in his mind.

  • shamili is so bubbli........................

  • hi guys nw im in canada but wenevr i hear ds sng it takes me to my good childhood days.. and also i miss my parents n frnds.. miss u my buddies ...

  • TAMIL rocks.i want to b a tamilian.

  • thanks...but i hope you know what a bad time our Tamils are going through...

  • wow. ..my childhood days

  • wow... i love this song... it reminds me of my childhood days... people used to call me anajli... coz even i had the same hair cut... i miss those days... thanks 4 the upload:):):)

  • Amir Khan and other hindi fellows would have learnt this 20 years back...They are trying to make hindi films like Anjali now a days.

    Tamil films are great..

  • " This song recalls my memories back 18yrs before when i am still 6yrs old... Really nice....me remember again my previous seasons...

  • 18+6=24

  • superb song..........it remmembers my dad...he use to sing this song for me wen i was a child......i love my dad..........love u so much dad......

  • ya, brilliant Mani-IR combo. Thanks a ton for uploading.

  • what a song..what a movie..aah miss the 90s..the best ever..miss it so much! :(

  • Ahhh... Just brings back a lot of childhood memories.... When i listen to the songs of the late 80's - early 90's i feel like i am still like 5-6 yrs old.... Thanks a lot for uploading the video

  • miss these kinda of movies these days

  • @shashi10ka True ssay boss...All the movies now a days are so crap...The robot movie..WTF...Its always about drugs technology, killing gangs and bullshit like dat...never a proper movie where you can really feel.

  • @shashi10ka Yes sweety, these days its all about Body, Out fits, Fake Heroism, Imitating hollywood ,smuggling & rowdyism....No more soul to soul movies,,the adaptation of western culture spoiled our soulfulness, relationships & entertainment....I m a worried Indian....Everytime when i watch this song, i ll cry,,thinking about the little baby girl,,i use to feel like a father...:(

  • My most favorite part in the song is 3:34 - 3:38 where the BGM ends and the stanza starts where tarun gently combs shamili's hair with his hands and the music in the background (violins) is just appropriate. An audio visual treat. Not sure whether we can hear any more songs from IR-Mani combo.

  • Chanceless!

They won't be working together again!

And I think you guys know the reason...

  • Why may we know please?

  • See, during the composition of the Sundari song from Dalapathy... Mani Ratnam wanted it to be in a traditional way but Ilaiyaraaja said... "your business is to direct movies, not coming into music and telling me what to do" somethin like that! So if you see... the next Mani Ratnam's film is Roja, music by A R Rahman!

  • And what classic editing with the kids running out of the sand bunk, the back ground lighting. I mean Mani Ratnam Sir and his crew are true magicians in the art of movie making.

How about the usage of Saxophone between 1.05-1.30. Superb!!!

  • Extraordinary composition. Hats off maestro. Still am able to listen to this song completely and enjoy it from start to end. Can't say the same about the songs coming from other maestros -just IMHO.

  • Such an awesome Pallavi!

  • This film was my favourite when i was juts 5 years old.

    Anjali Anjali Anjali

    Meri Ankhon ka Tara Anjali

    :(

  • kabalakabala pls don't call yourself a university student, you give the educational system in India a VERY bad name!

  • Lovely song.....

But what a liberating medium the internet is. It gives the illiterates a chance to show off their ignorance. What fantastic comments down under.... LOL!

  • anjaaalii

  • 2 cents!!...lol...must living in some other country...got brainwashed there....didnt you

  • this is so cool, my name is Anjali, this is so my ringtone, lol

  • hmmm...my favourite song......one day one of my frd cald me and tel me to open ur gmail id, whn i open it i saw that my frd send me this video thr youtube ...thn i remember that day was frdship day...so happy...i don't know how to express my feelings thn.....

  • Super song..I just logged into my youtube account after a long long time..just to comment on this video.. :)

  • words cannot describe the sheer brilliance of this song...the piece between 2:58 and 3:38 is a sweet little masterpiece in itself! Mozart and Bach may have inspired Ilayaraja but he has proven to far exceed their combined musical prowess. Thank you, thank you, thank you

  • To synergee's comment - I grew up loving this song, I'm a Tamilian myself, but I think it's a bit of a stretch to say Illaiyaraaja (who I love) is more talented than Mozart and Bach combined ??? Illaiyaraaja is definitely one of the best in India, no doubt. But Mozart and Bach are two of the best composers of all time. There's no real comparison, in my opinion. Just my 2 cents.

  • Mozart and Bach may been better than Raaja when you only consider western classical (although, not by much in my opinion) but Raaja was also incredibly gifted when it came to tamil folk music and classical indian (carnatic) music. And it is this combined effect from someone with a deep mastery of these 3 flavors of music that left a profound, lasting impression on the listener, especially a tamil listener - far beyond what one could hope for from Mozart or Bach alone. 'Appreciate your comment :)

  • Well said!! If you have time, please visit my blogs from my youtube channel page. Thanks!!

  • have u ever even heard of mozart and who ever the other guy is?....who said they is great?....do we indians think that they are great?...well first of all, most fo us dont know who he is...and just bcos weterners thinkn like thme doesnt make him world famous...this is why we are always below them...appreaciate this kind of music...this is the best in the world...bach!!...who is he?

  • If you havent heard Mozart, then you must be really ignorant in Music. Ilayaraja is a legend in his own right and no questions about that. But please dont compare people from different era. Mozart and Bach are geniuses and their contributions to Music are immense..If you dont know about them its better to not post derogatory things like "bach!! who is he ?"

  • ok..i understand...it means something to you americans...sorry if i offended you....btw how do u know abt Llaiyaraaja?....btw i have heard of mozart not the other guy

  • I am an Indian. I adore the music of many geniuses like Mozart, Ilayaraja, MSV, K V Mahadevan, R.D and S.D Burman, A R Rahman, John Williams etc....

  • ahh..now it all makes sense...of course you would know who mozart and the other guy is bcos u live in us...thats what i am saying, if u had lived in india, u wouldn't have heard of these guys...just bcos u live in us, u know these guys...

  • I am in the US for just 1 year. I had known these legends long before. I am not saying its wrong in not knowing them. But commenting on them without knowing is what I don't support. Anyways.. the topic is getting way deviated from Music and this song :)...

  • ok..true indeed...bye

  • ha ha.. kabala.. I've never even been near the US but i ve heard about both Mozart n Bach.. n BTW. Mozart is an Austrian not an American.. Bach s German.. n y do u think we r below the Americans.. infact we r partly responsible for America's current status.. Bill Gates himself said he would shift Microsoft to India if all the Indians in the US were to b evacuated.. yet we r not as developed as the US coz we contribute to them more than to our own country..!!!!

  • dats what i am sayng...these nris are just TRAITORS..dey go to othr countries nd actually benefit dem...y do they have to go the other countries?...ok..for good education and money...but why can they try harder here and u ALWAYS GET SATISFACTION WHEN YOU ARE AT HOME.actually the point that u made contradicts ur statement itself....u said he would shift ms ti india, again isnt that an maerican company that we indians are working for?...and pls dont say "oh we live in a globalised owrld and all"

  • nostalgic! oh my god-- i did group dance on this song when i was young--- we lived in a very similar condomanium.Back in the day.

  • I so agree...

  • my sister got to kiss shalini on stage during the premiere of this movie.

What a masterpiece by Mani Ratnam. Exploring such untouched subjects in film-making! I used to cherish this movie growing up!

  • f...u.......

Besides wht u say will never effect her, shes a lot more famous then u will ever b. it sucks she has money, im guessing u have nothing better to do like a job or anything cuz u make such comments. y dont u go mind ur own business and ur own life before u judge someone else.

shes my favorite, and j'adore le musique.

  • omg is there anyway i can find the movie

  • Such a beautiful movie. Lil Shamili has done an AMAZING job. All bollywood/tollywood actresses put together cannot beat her. Maniratnam's best!

My FAVORITE movie since I was a kid.

  • true brotha

  • I am naming my daughter Anjali that is due Sept 2nd. I heard this name from a friend who named her daughter Anjali and she is married to an Indian guy. I am wondering though what does this song mean? What does the name Anjali mean? I love it and will use it regardless but I want to know what the song and the meaning of her name is. Thanks!

  • Anjali means offering.

  • the name anjali means offering, or something used in prayer. i would think twice about naming your daughter this though the movies about a retarded girl and apparently thats all indian people think of when they hear the name (kinda like naming your son forest). my girlfriends named anjali and she got made fun of a lot growing up. if you dont live in india it probably wont be a problem though, and its a beautiful name!

  • i don't understand but i like this song.

  • superb song yaar........

  • i was born the same year the movie released...amazing movie..amazing acting from all the cast...Raguvaran,Revaty and all the child actors

  • wonderful song! i was like 2 years elder than anjali. i enjoyed this film at that time. Very sad Climax really a masterpiece from Maniratnam

  • the girl in this vid that acts as anjali is baby shamili, shalini's younger sister. I grew up watching her movies, but can't seem to find anything on youtube. Does anyone know where I can find some?

  • i only saw her in kandukondein kandukondein as ash and tabu's younger sis

  • No body can match the "Pure genius of Meastro every respected Iliaraja". Maniratnam and Madhu Ambat {cameraman) has created this "once in a life time song". This is the movie where we cried, shear pleasure and masterpiece!!

  • Aagayam bhoomiyellam, iraivan undakinaama, Aasithan teeramalle unnai undakinnan. What a masterpiece of lyrics, music and direction. Grown up's have lost the purity of innocence that as a kid he or she would have been. That's the irony of life!! Can't help but feel sad when I sit back and think about all those lost days as kid.

  • Thanks for ths wonderful and cute songs..........
