Why do you stick the rods in the water while trolling? How do you know if something is on it if its not pulling out drag?

It gets the lure down deeper with less line out and keeps floating weeds from sliding down the line to the lure. You learn what the rods should look like and notice any difference by site and feel of the line with your hand.
