Ray Davies is the only rocker who has ever made affectationsreally work. Plastic Man wouldn't be Plastic Man without that kooky affectation. Most other groups that try this just sound retarded. (hint: Robert Plant)
I never thought about that song in that context....but then again I never saw the the homoerotic undertones in "see my friends" either. Heck it took me a couple listens before I got LOLA. Guess I'm not observant.
Dave Davies kind of grinds my gears. He is so jealous of his brother. I seriously doubt that Ray is as messed up as Dave describes him as being. Perhaps he's having an inner conflict because his brother, Dave, won't accept his love...
I have tried to think this out too. But, wouldn't you be a little jealous if you started a group and your brother took it over. Then you find out he's the suddenly, the greatest songwriter in the world. But, I can't judge them. I have a younger brother and our sibling rivalry would make the Davies, look like Family Circus!
Do you assume then, that Ray was not at all jealous of Dave? I think its a Two-way (not a Dead End) street. But you're right, there probably is some sort of bias coming out of both their mouths.
I think that their tortured family history might have had something to do with it. Lots of traumas. Bear in mind, Dave fathered a child that he wasn't allowed to see, when he was 16 and Ray had his first breakdown in 1966, when he had the world at his feet.
That was freakin' great...The Kinks were my favorite "British Invasion" band from the mid-sixties. I still have all the lp's they released in the states from the 60's.
Never knew when Avory left the band (knew they went through bass players quick)...

Thanks a million for the upload. What a way to finish a documentary with Ray saying "my work is better than I am, I dont live up to it". Great quote.

Love the Kinks... so great, like so many of the Brit Invasion bands of that time.
