It has kind of backfired on us then, as we the British, are now dependant on the rest of the world for our food. We currently only produce 60-70% of our daily requirement.

60-70% is not too shabby. If you absolutely had to, you could all live on that, we in the West could stand to lose a few pounds anyway.
