  • what match highlights were they referring to in the background? are they talking about KP and the 2007 world cup?

  • its a inu

  • Is that an Akita Inu or an American Akita?

  • @dtownrebel1 - He is an Australian akita. I rescued him at age 3 so I don't know his breeding. There are a fair number of akitas here and I believe they are healthier than the US dogs. He has the constitution of a horse, although his digestive system cannot handle curry but anything else he is fine with. He is 13 now and other than being heartworm positive when we adopted him, he is never sick but slowing down as he ages.

  • @rooeytoo Australian Akita? I haven't heard of that breed. Idk about generalizing a population of dogs in an area on how healthy they are.

  • @Giodamus - I simply mean he is an akita born in Australia as opposed to one born in USA or Japan. The Japanese akita is almost considered a separate breed than the American bred ones.

Imh opinion akitas here are more hardy than those in USA, less skin problems, bloat etc. I am generalizing based on my experience, I don't know that there are any statistics to prove or disprove. Of course statistics can lean in any direction depending on who is footing the bill for compiling them.

  • @rooeytoo But see when you mention stuff like that its opinion. I disagree only to the point where you believe over there they have less of what you mentioned. Stuff like that is really how the dog is taken care of. So really it's the owner. And yes statistics can lean anyway and that also depends on the individual and their care for the dog. But if your also mentioning stuff like bugs and diseases passed through lets say mosquitos, then thats based on area cause not all bugs in all areas carry

  • @Giodamus - all I can tell you is that I was in the dog business, kennel, handling, training, etc. for about 25 years in the USA and now in the same line of work in Australia for the last 15, so based on my knowledge, akitas do not have nearly the genetic health problems in Australia that they do in USA. Probably because the breed is not nearly as popular here so there are not as many pet shop or back yard breeders trying to make a fast buck.

  • @rooeytoo Then with that you have a point lol. Akitas none the less are beautiful dogs. Whether American or Inu.

  • @rooeytoo the same viruses and not all carry any viruses. But I get what you mean by where he was born lol. Just like us humans and our nationality.

  • @rooeytoo - heartworm problems in the tropical areas are equivalent to the southern parts of the USA but not anywhere near the skin diseases, ear infections, hip and shoulder probs, as are in the breed in the US.

Of course this is my opinion but as for the care taken of the dog, that has little effect on genetic health problem.

  • haha my akita play fights with my two little dogs, it's pretty funny to watch. He's very gentle, and makes hilarious whiney sounds. He kind of likes to poke them as if to provoke them, and then backs away scared when they snap at him.

  • Is that a little shiba, the small one?

  • Beautiful, beautiful dog.

  • your akita looks mixed with shiba inu

  • I have never seen a shiba who weighs 98 lbs and stand 27" at the withers, but if they did, then yep he does sorta!!!

  • lol - Akitas are decendents of shiba inu's. check out my girl on my page.

  • Hey "aNiMeANiMaLs", this one appears more as a Shiba because it happens to be a Red coated Akita of the Japanese Variety. They do often appear as large Shibas, & they are essentially the same dog, simply in different sizes. Lol, as for this video, it reminds me of my Alaskan Husky/Akita playing with my Jack Russell Terrier. The JRT is THE Boss for sure, lol, & the Husky/Akita completely looks up to the JRT. They're amazing together. My Akita is 24" tall & approx. 50 lbs. (2 yrs Old), & FAST.

  • but i thought Akita where ancient breeds while shibas where newer breeds compared to Akita

though i may just be dumb and wrong

  • Your not dumb. No one is born knowing everything. Both are ancient breeds. Akitas were originally much smaller.

  • Heehee cute^^

  • The akita didn't loose. The akita is showing dominance when the little dog is pinned against the couch. The akita is annoyed and walks away.

  • ummm yea. the Akita if angry could snap the dog in half in one bite. Akitas were once used to hunt bears.

  • really luv akitas altho i hvn really seen 1 in real life b4...

  • actually akitas have been known to take down bears..

does this mean they can take down 10 feet tall grizzly bears? NOOOO

does this mean they can take down an average bears YESSSSSS

  • yeh in a pack they can :S

  • watch?v=mceMfpPtdlI

two akitas can take down a bear.

  • omg that cant akita dont atk hes not dumb he knows that...

  • I have a six year old akita who will play like that with dogs she knows. You can see a couple of videos on my profile.

However, the funniest thing to see is when I take our gerbils out of their tank and put them in their rolling balls. They beat the akita up unmercifully.

  • I saw your dog with the lhasa and newfie, that is great. Can't find the one of the akita with the gerbils, would love to see that. Friend had bouv and hampster in ball, that was funny too. Bouv would get totally freaked!!!

  • Akita-Ken's are smart.

  • So cute. I love my Akita. He is the most hard headed stubborn dog I have ever owned. But I love him to death.

  • they're just screwing around lol

  • since akitas are known for their violence and aggression (doesn't mean they all are), may i ask if your akita is showing playful restraint because he or she knows the other, smaller dog? i'm guessing your akita is too loving and smart to actually hurt another member of the family?

  • Each akita I have known has a different tolerance level. This dog is not particularly aggressive towards any other dogs unless they get in his face, so I never take chances with strange dogs. Always put mine in a sit and do my best to fend off the other before they meet. With the little brown dog, we have always treated her as leader of the pack, so he has always been gentle with her. Our house is arranged so that she can hide and get away from him.

  • how much are akitas now a days,. i use to have one

  • "Fending off other dogs", how do you do it? My Akita's fine with people but not dogs. (Can't blame him, he's been attacked & injured by dogs.) Anyway, what do you do about the idiot owners who let their dogs run off the leash? If these dogs come charging over uninvited to my dear Poochie Pie, he will fight them. I wave my fists and yell at the charging dog, what else can I do? Poochie has never started a fight in his life but he will finish them if he must.

  • then the other dog will get his due. I once yelled at a lady whos dog came charging over and bit my shirt. I was struggling to keep my girl from taking a chunk of that dog. the lady thought i was trying to protect my dog when i was trying to protect hers. but yea you dont need the attention when your Akita snaps one of the irresponsible peoples dog in half. so all you can do is keep your dog away and report them to the city. the big bad akita will get the bad rap even tho they were in the wrong.

  • Did you yell at the lady before the dog charged? What breed was the dog that was charging at you?

  • Beautiful, beautiful dog. He (at least I think it's a he) looks just like my 14-year-old we had to put down in July. I think they are the most wonderful breed you could get.

  • Although I am no dog expert I am faily certain Akitas were used as guard dogs, the Emperor used them.

I'd say an Akita is probably the nastiest dog you can get !

  • not if they are trained. trained akitas are more obedient, respectful, intelligent, beautiful then shephards and rotwiellers.

  • score one for the little man

  • She's actually a little woman and her name is Bird Dog! If she were an akita, I would have to euthanize her, she is a terror!

  • all dogs breeds should be fine with other animals if you discipline them correctly from birth, a strong hand helps with bigger more aggressive breeds

  • I've got a Siberian Husky and used to have an Akita. Two very different but amazing dogs.

  • the akita should have just sat on the little one :D

  • hey my first dog was an akita and i handle him fine and hes not a problem, jus do your research and its nuttin to worry about

  • im lookin into a new dog either a akita a siberian husky or a alsation so yeh the closer wolf lookers lol but if im alowed one wud it be ok with either living at my mums with a little yorkshire terrier and a border collie or if i keep it at dads wiv the american staffiture and the cat wat ya think?

  • Well, if you're getting a Siberian Husky I don't think you'd want to have him or her in the same house with an animal as small as a cat or a Yorkie. They are usually an incredibly predatory breed and will find great fun in hunting down a fellow fur-kid. Mine had a fine time trying to eat my bird...

  • oh lol but what about a akita?

  • akita are agressive but extremely extremely loyal. you have to discipline them at birth to adolescence to tame them. their breed used to kill bears and large predatory animal, but if you assert yourself as the alpha male of the pack, he will be disciplined. they are not usually friendly to other animals and humans, and they are not the type of dogs who are as playful as golden retrievers. but their loyalty is boundless.

  • Akitas were NOT used for killing bears. Does anyone honestly believe an Akita (or any other dog) is strong and dangerous enough to bring down an angry bear ?

Akitas were used by hunters to track and corner, the killing was done by the huntsmen. This is no different to how many breeds of dog are still used today.

Unfortunately misinformation like this gets the akita a lot of negative and unwarranted publicity. Visit the jawt or akitarescue for the facts.

  • they were used to kill bears may mean that they are used to track bears or used to bring them down bears by themselves. akita was used as both, though on the latter case, they were not really used by anyone. they can track bears and other animals for their masters to eventually kill those animals. they can also bring down a bear because dogs travel in groups. by the way, it is not misinformation that i intend. handling an akita must be done intelligently.

  • Both are wronge. They were used by Japan soldier n police force. Yes they were use for hunting aswell (and yes they did bring down the animal its-self) I've seen just two bring down one with my own eyes while hunting. But they started back in japan. ninjas loved thes dogs because they wont bark first like dogs do. if they made their mind up to attack they do it and you never see or hear them coming

  • They were used for bears hunting in Japan 100% sure. Later up the americans took some of the dogs away and made a new version of the dog. Called Great Japanese dog. Since 2000 they're called American Akita and the japanese and american got split up in two breeds.

  • people will say someone is wrong only for the sake of saying it. you contradicted yourself, dude. but nice observation in akita's attacking style

  • OMG a NINJA DOG!? where can I get mine???

  • You're right.

The cool thing is that our American Akita LOVES human. While she should not, acording to her bread lol.

  • I think you need to do some more research and choose a breed on something other than the fact that it looks a bit like a wolf. It is this sort of silly attitude which ends up with large powerful breeds being owned by people who know nothing about the breed, about training and socialisation, about dogs in general, cannot even spell properly and are plainly lacking something which they imagine owning a large potentially dangerous dog, will give them.

  • well i can appreciate your critisism and do agree but i've owned dogs for almost 16years now and ive got experience with pitbulls nd they're potentially the most dangerous breed to own but i do love akitas and huskies but i could never see myself owning a malamute they are massive one attacked my pitbull tara yesterday while i was walkin her i had to jump on the malamute worst thing about it is my friend was walking the dog when she was attacked so i deffinatly dont wnt a malamute lol

  • your comment about pitbulls shows me that you don't know much about dogs and are probably a liar too since pitbulls have been illegal in the UK for 16 years. The fact that you state that you have a pitbull shows what sort of person you are, either a liar or lawbreaker, which is it?

  • actually theyve been illegal for 2years FIGHTING them has been illegal for 16 and im not a liar i do have one but i love her and shes a gentle dog so why dont you fuck off before you judge dogs and dont insult me i was being friendly you arrogant twat

  • pitts are no more dangerous than any other breed and are one of the most human friendly. they are though dog agressive and that is compleatly differant

  • Aww!!! This Akita plays so gentle like mine. She loves puppies. Kitties too. Akitas are the best, you just have to socialize them early. Mine loves everything and everyone!

  • Awesome dog! Check out my cute Akita.

  • both of em are akitas

  • i love my akita sheeba we'er tring to find her a friend but there so expensive we got our pure bred akita for free!!!akita's are really strong and so you have to use all your body strenghth lol

  • Akitas are beautiful but protective, if your used to labs and retrievers, maybe own a big dog or two, definently not for begginers. but i love my Akita but i had to go through training and more training to earn his respect and to make him respect other people. they are also high energy and need space to run and play, other wise they are the most wonderful dogs.

  • Well put Techno. Cool video. The small dog could be a chew toy at any time the Akita decided I'm sure!

  • Is it possible for these dogs to be safe?

    Coz' i'd like one.

  • these dogs are wonderfull pets.. any dog you get is a good pet as long as you socialize them from an early age... get a puppy and introduce him daily to other dogs and kids and he will be like a big beautiful baby when his older.. dont forget.. its all about socializing pups that makes them non-agressive to kids, people and other dogs

  • If you look in books about Akitas youll find that their personalities are 25% loving 25% protective and 25% of what their owner makes them. If you know how to handle dogs and properly socialize them then there isnt a breed around that can beat the Akita Inu.

  • hey, u seems to know quite a bit about them. May i ask you a question? you dont have to reply if you dont want to. i want to buy an Akita as my 1st pet and i was wondering if they are suitable for 1st time dog owner??

  • For a first time dog owner I would be wary of getting such a large breed that can be aggressive. Improperly handled they can become the "loaded gun" of an attack waiting to happen. This isn't good for the owner which will have legal fees and the dog which will have to be put down. If you even have a question as to whether you can handle the dog you shouldn't buy one. Look into the Akita's smaller cousins such as the Shiba Inu.

  • thx for the reply! im still reading/researching about this type of dog.. i know owning a dog is commitment and lots of planning before i will make any final decision. thx again !

  • Clone351 is absolutely right, though I'd go so far as to say the individual Akita's personality is shaped at least 50% by its owner. The Akita is NOT a dog for the first-time dog-owner. As a breed they are extremely loyal, but they also require intense training. Respect is key with Akitas, and I've seen so many potentially GREAT dogs given up because while the dog LOVED its owner, it didn't RESPECT its owner. That's how people end up getting hurt.
