i got two Red Eared Slider today one is very fine and the other is not eating, his eyes seems to swollen and rarely opens its eyes,when he breathes after swmming a bit he blows some bubble and also he is floating lopsided on rightside but he swims fine

@shaneama11 by cage u mean small tank? u dont really need uv light. u just need to give the turtle heat and that can come from a spot bulb. like i have. my turtle never really got UV light, but hes alright. but if you dont give him light, then he can get infections. so get a clamp lamp or sumthing similar n get a spot bulb, tho its bes tto get uv bulb. but its only available in some countries so for people like me, i have no choice but u get a spot bulb, it heats the rock well ,light is a must.
@shaneama11 actually you do need UV light- you need two types, UVA and UVB. They both are vital for the turtle to live, especially healthy and longer. Realize that RES do not only need water they also need a space for where there is only land ano no water. This is where the turtle needs to bask, meaning where they just lay down in front of the uva light. Trust me this is important. I just bought a RES and I have done my research.
@abbywabby30 Oh :) I knw its important so that the trtle grow better and have better immunity. but you knw uvb lights made for turtles isnt available where i live, so i tries to take him to sunlight in the evening, but other times i can only use the spot heat bulb, but still hes doing pretty well, u knw my friend had also bought one with me, and his died in 2 months because he kept the turtle in a bucket with cold water and he used to carry it around in his pocket. so the turtle died one day :(
@gobind888 thats really sad. but im glad you are trying your best with the resources that you have. also remember you can feed him carrots, lettuce, bananas to give him vitamin A and stuff. @killerCOD97 Hi, I feed him like a little bit,i like imagine 35-40 pellets. im not really sure. i feed him pellets 2 times and shrimp before sleep time. so 3 meals done. and once a week i give him spinach, chicken, tomatoes. and he really likes lychee, :P. and he used to be afraid of me, at first he wont get on the basking area in front of me, only when no ones around. so one day i peeked thru my window before going in and there he was sitting. slowly every day he got a lil less shy u knw. :)
im not sure the water level should be that much, i think it should be much less to make it easier for him to breathe, looks like hes struggling to breathe
@OkbaACA Oh thanks for the comment, actually res need even more water than this. this is still less. hes a aquatic terrapin so he can hold his breath for long periods of time. thats why he sleeps underwater every night and takes a lil "sip" of air every few minutes.

You can search "An ideal RES turtle tank setup" on youtube to see how up you can rise the water level and it's a very good example of proper housing for turtles. I hope I don't sound rude, it's not my intention at all and my English is not that good. I can see the video I recommended on the sideblock now, maybe you have already watched it.
He needs a lot bigger tank and you can rise up the water level a lot (of course not so much that he can jump off of the tank). Yuo could also make a basking place out of a typical plastic container box which has a lid. My turtles love it, it's very simple to attach with s-hooks (you have to drill holes into the box). Red eared sliders love to swim and dive, they require quite much space. It is recommended to have at least an 80 gallon tank but preferably much bigger, as these turltles grow big.
: U.V light- Overexposure to UV radiation can cause photo-kerato-conjunctivitis. Check to make sure the UV light is at a safe distance.
Turtles that are stressed with illness can go rapidly downhill and refuse to eat. Electrolyte replacement therapy can help prevent this. Soak the turtle in an slightly warmer bath made with Pedialyte/water 1:1 solution or with a herp electrolyte replacement. 90 degrees would not be excessive for this 30-60 minute bath.
@Cooludeful My bulb isnt even UV, u knw that,?? LOL.. for natural UV light..everyday i put him for 2-3 hours outside in my garden...so that is safe isnt it?? anyways thnks for sharing this, will keep in mind when buying a UV bulb..
For anyone who thinks their turtle may have a respiratory infection and or eye infection.
: Clean Water- Invest in a powerful Filter. Change water every week or so.
: Humidity- Use spagnum moss and potted plants and mist daily to prevent problems associated by dry air. When eye puffiness has appeared, misting 2 or 3 times a day may help clear it up.
: Vitamin A- Aquatic plants, dark greens, sweet potato, squash and carrots in the diet can prevent vitamin A deficiencies. Too much is toxic.
My turtle is suffering from the same thing except both his eyes are swollen shut with no reptile vets in the area. Did you have the same situation? How exactly did you help him?

@totomehra man dont worry,good thing u keep him in warm water,it helps curing infection and also the real cure will come only if u give the turtle a proper basking area,search up on youtube if u dont know what im saying,the heat of the light burns out all the bacteria on the shell and also increases digestion and metabolism,!!i got that mucus too,it cured when i got a proper setup for my turtle,good luck!!:)

my turtle is having early symptons of respiratory infection, i'm not sure what to do, it's very expensive to take her to a vet. is there anything i can do at home, is it safe to give her children's medicine syringe?
@MissDa255 hey :),If the respiratory infection is in its early stages, follow this guidelines, otherwise, take it to a veterinarian immediately) Keep the room tightly closed to avoid air drafts.Keep the water warm, this is the most important factor that will allow your turtle to fight the infection.If you have more than one turtle, separate the infected from the rest, since infections are contagious.If the condition doesn't improve within five days, take her immediately to a veterinarian.

@devintunn78 man im sorry for ya,its not really ur fault,the turtle itself may have got some infection already b4 u bought it, so to cure it ul need some vitamin A drops or cod-liver oil,put some on his eyes everyday for better lubrication,he may not get in water,but eventually day by day his eyes will cure,all u need to do is have patience,and when applying the vitamin a drops or cod liver oil,do it carefully,if u dont see results in a week then u may have to take him to a vet:(.

and i just cured it using a heat lamp 3 days ago..
i put the heat lamp right in the turtles basking area atleast 3 inches near the turtle. my heat lamp is just 20 watts and waited till the next day it began eating again and its now in good condition
i guess my turtle just had a cold but its a serious symptom for them

My turtle's eyes are shut and ever since i got him a week back hes not been eating :(
he has sneezed atleast thrice and im really worried i dont have a reptile vet here in dubai either :(

I have a red eared slider. his name is crush. I have had i him for like 4 years. I love him but his tank is so small and he is so big. My mom wants to give him away. But i love him so much!

@DBDshow12 if u love him,i request plz dont give him away,keep him,just buy a new bigger tank,i bet its not that cheap,u can sacrifice some of ur savings for his joy,ur like god to him,if u go away from him,hel die sooner than ud expect!!he may be a reptile and he doesnt have much facial expressions to show u his love,but still he loves u i know,dont let this happen,remember the first time u bought,him,how u were fascinated by him and looked at him for several hours,plz fight for him!!:)good luk

heyy.. i guess my red ear slider also has an infection... whenever i put him in the water...he spits out a little mucous kind of stuff.. once - twice a day..m keeping him in warm water..n he hates being in the water anyway..so he's mostly out..n he's behaving normally..n after a run i think he breathes from his mouth for a few seconds.. the vets here dont know mucha about turtle... they gave my friends turtle an injection n it died..m really worried...could u help??

@totomehra man dont worry,good thing u keep him in warm water,it helps curing infection and also the real cure will come only if u give the turtle a proper basking area,search up on youtube if u dont know what im saying,the heat of the light burns out all the bacteria on the shell and also increases digestion and metabolism,!!i got that mucus too,it cured when i got a proper setup for my turtle,good luck!!:)

@gobind888 hey thank u so much..he's with me since almost 7 years..yup i know about the basking thing..n i have never had a light i.e uva & uvb set up...i just grew him naturally..n he basked in the natural sunlight..but the problem is that its rainy season here..n there's no sun light :( i guess i'l try putting him under a normal halogen light for the warmth...is it ok? n u think its ok if i dont take him to a vet?? (sorry for bothering u wid questions)

@totomehra sorry for late repyl but when season is cold,i use aquarium water heater,its cheap and easy to use,dont forget to ask for safe use instruction from pet shop,aslo u really need heaters for cold climates,or ur turtle may get diseases faster!!

my turtle is having early symptons of respiratory infection, i'm not sure what to do, it's very expensive to take her to a vet. is there anything i can do at home, is it safe to give her children's medicine syringe?

@MissDa255 hey :),If the respiratory infection is in its early stages, follow this guidelines, otherwise, take it to a veterinarian immediately) Keep the room tightly closed to avoid air drafts.Keep the water warm, this is the most important factor that will allow your turtle to fight the infection.If you have more than one turtle, separate the infected from the rest, since infections are contagious.If the condition doesn't improve within five days, take her immediately to a veterinarian.

hi, i have a red eared slider too. actually i have two of them. one of them has its eyes super swollen and shut and wont eat. there is no vets that will take him in and im so scared for him. can you please tell me what steps you took to making your turtle all better. i really hope to hear from you soon.

@DarkShawdow700 umm i need to tell u this,i bought 3 new red eared sliders a while ago and they just wont eat,their shells became softer and softer till they died,i tried to feed em but they refused,BUT!!if ur turtles r new and too young and r eating,then u dont need to worry cuz they will grow by time,:),BTW Tangy is still healthy,hes the best LOL!

my turtle got the swallon eye for like 1 mounth but then when i come from school on friday i got 2 my grandfathers house every friday i leve my turtles there in house then i go look at my turtle cage my 3 turtle wasent there so i tell my grandfather weres my turtle hes says i floshed down the toilet but he did it by actcident because he thought it was dead next my other turtle dies now i only have 1 ive had it for 2 years now but im buying a new turtle tomarrawo so my other one wlnt be lonely

@devintunn78 man im sorry for ya,its not really ur fault,the turtle itself may have got some infection already b4 u bought it, so to cure it ul need some vitamin A drops or cod-liver oil,put some on his eyes everyday for better lubrication,he may not get in water,but eventually day by day his eyes will cure,all u need to do is have patience,and when applying the vitamin a drops or cod liver oil,do it carefully,if u dont see results in a week then u may have to take him to a vet:(.

dude i have the same desease like your turtle a swelling eye and lost of appetite
and i just cured it using a heat lamp 3 days ago..
i put the heat lamp right in the turtles basking area atleast 3 inches near the turtle. my heat lamp is just 20 watts and waited till the next day it began eating again and its now in good condition
i guess my turtle just had a cold but its a serious symptom for them
Hope this helps for peoples with the same situation i have.

yeah man,a lamp is veryy important for the turtle(it kills bacteria and algae on the shell,good thing hes fine now:),u shud get a heater too if the temperature is below 26* degrees,im gonna upload an update on my turtle in a few minutes,watch it too:)

yeah but ill buy that when i already have a 200 gallon aquarium for my freshwater fishes because its a high price here in philippines...
1 dollar = 48 pesos and my allowance is only 150 pesos or 3 dollars a day so it will take some time before i can buy that despite the fact that my parents hates turtles because here in asia they say that turtles are slow so means your money income will be slow too,i dont believe it though.......

oh ok then what i said earlier is that my turtle is sick again ive seen some mucus in he's nose so i guess its a cold ill be putting my 20 watts bulb again in the top of theyre basking area...

and good news for me my parents accepted the turtle as our new family haha now im very happy...:D
anyway could you find uvb lights in hardware stores like ace hardwares or home depot we have those stores here in philippines only i dont know if they sell those type of lights...

actually,even my Bulb is not uvb,its just a spot bulb,u dont need to really have a uvb bulb,just something similar to sunlight,my bulb is 40W Spot Bulb,ask it on ur hardware store,

and i think i know how to make a uvb bulb using a flouriscent light i think you just have to remove the mercury from it i havent tried it though and im not sure if its not dangerous for turtles but try searching uv rays from wikipedia and youll learn lots from it...
