  • BOC on Merv Griffin. I bet Merv thought Buck was cute in that outfit! Still a great rock n roll band

  • I think they definetely lip synched it, but they were playing their instruments live. So maybe they were just running the isolated vocal track and letting them play live. It certainly "felt" live, but safer because of the fake vocals.

What if Charlie Watts played drums for these guys? He would have been the perfect choice to take their stuff up to real prominence.

  • "Buck" looks like Edgar allen Poe. And wasn't merv a perv?

  • this is so embarassing..

  • Here's something to ponder,

At least there is a record of them going through the motion of singing their own song. Would you rather have no footage except music videos. I don't think anyone would disagree with that. Imagine all the groups and solo artists of the mostly '60s and '70s that there would be no footage at all.

Not everybody made it to Bandstand,Rock Concert, and The Midnight Special, back then

  • Bettie Davis Eyes? Even Merv knew it was 'Joan Crawford' ha ha!!!

  • Where is the cowbell guy?

  • Their lip synching.

  • This was BOC on the back 9 of their career. After On Your Feet or On Your Knees it was downhill real fast. First 3 albums are classics

  • @mrmott44

     Nailed.

  • Why do TV shows drag all the equipment in and then have bands lip-synch? I know the sound quality in a TV studio would suck for live music, but why not just play the record and then talk to the guests? No one who knows anything is fooled by the sham performance, with no cords running from the guitars, etc. Good song though, and good n Merv for introducing the old women who watched him to BOC. I guess.

  • @TheUndercoverclam I was thinking that this sounded an awful lot like the studio cut lol

  • @Bleedingedgehx absolutely the studio cut...painfully apparent. Their lip synching was atrocious...but love them nonetheless....

  • @TheUndercoverclam ...if you were a stagehand, you wouldn't be whining...

  • Very cool, that studio sound on live TV! (muffled cough)

  • Comment removed

  • The music in the 70s was great ( I was there) but TV was just plain fucking lame.

  • I remember watching this on TV.

  • one of the first sell-out bands of all time

  • It was common back in the day to lip sync on shows like this because most people had mono TVs that sounded like crap and live boards weren't much better at the time.Imagine trying to do a live mix under the very poor quality TV offered. Many labels just wouldn't take the chance never mind the production involved for a 5 minute slot pre MTV.Just play the album,it's allot easier.

  • okay, someone already made the comment about lip synching...

now i have a confession, once upon a time, i owned a shirt similar to the one buck dharma was wearing in this! lol!

  • @sevenismagicman LMAO!!

  • heaven

  • Yeah, I thought they were lip-synching. Other than a few minor variations, it sounded very much like the album version. Nevertheless, they were one of the greatest bands, and that song is a timeless classic. These days all you hear on the radio is Barbie rock and that stupid high-pitch computer voice alteration they use in every pop song.

  • I like how the keyboard plays itself at around 2:28.

  • The guest spoke the truth. An album that will become a classic.

  • Synching has to be the equivalent of selling your musical soul. How could they live with themselves.

  • Me 262 prince of turbojet!

    Junkers Jumo 004!

  • explorer or flying v , make a damn decision.

  • buck fuckin darma

  • Beginning of the end of an era.. Enter the corporate wussification of the music industry. Video killed the radio star.

    Great BOC tune though. :D

  • Oh my f*ck*n g*d! BOC after they sold out. Seven Screaming Distbusters are needed here.

  • Spinal Tap.

  • Who the hell is this shill talking to Merv? He couldn't be an odder advance man for a band like BOC

  • @kirbygene meltzer.... he was their main songwriter !

  • @HackerGuitarist -- the guy in the suit that introduced them? i figured he was some kind of radio or record company executive. Surely he's not a songwriter for BOC? lol

  • Comment removed

  • He seemed sincere.

  • I think Merv Griffin was CIA...

  • Cow bell....I need more Cow bell. Gotta have the Cow bell

  • I am sorry, but seriously, more cowbell. They don't have a guy in the band with a cowbell? What a rip off. They probably left him out because he would get all the chicks.

  • I'm sure they would have preferred to play live but the big time producers back then always wanted to stay safe and avoid live performances. Probably to have it sound EXACTLY like the song on the radio, also to avoid possible mistakes and sloppiness.

  • Look mom, no wires!!

  • Lip Syncing... thats cool... they still Rock!!!

  • Lip syncing... hahahaha

  • They're lipin' it

  • I love this song. These guys are so awesome. PLUS did I say HOT.

  • Does anybody know what kinda guitar Buck is playing?looks like a cross between a flying v and an explorer.

  • @U2wild I looked around because I was curious too. It appears to be a Roman Abstract Vulcan. So there you go.

  • @U2wild It's a custom, hand-made, one-off guitar made by Luthier J.C. Harper. Harper later released a line of guitars based on the one he made for Dharma. They're called the "Vegas Vulcan." Harper has recently re-issued an updated version of this line with some improvements - they sell for around $2k US.

  • Loved it!

  • Merv went to sit on his throne of boys after the show.

  • Wow, great song!!! Today's music has really gone to shit!

  • i love this song. still have the album!

  • Love the band and the song - but this is one bad lip sync. I actually remember seeing this MG episode, crap, I feel old : ) But, come to think of it, alot of this type thing went on back then. There was a rumor once that Led Zep even lip sync'd a whole show.

  • Gotta give Kal Rudman some props for trying to convince Merv this was a good idea, although I think he takes a page from Jon Lovitz' character" Tommy Flannagan- the pathelogical liar" when he says "Their thrilled to be here". Lol!!! Would've loved to be a fly on the wall when promoter talked them into doing this show! My aunts, God Bless their memory, loved watching Merv, guaranteed they turned volume down. Lol!!

  • What kind of crazy ass guitar is Buck D playin?

  • @jeembo420 That's a 1978 Balestra "Vulcan". A hand-made job by a guy in New York. I think it's pretty cool. Looks like a fusion between an Explorer and a Flying V. Just google "Buck Dharma guitars" and it's right there.

  • Needs more Guitars..........

  • I saw this when it first aired...a kid of 12..father had just died...i turned to music...

  • more COW BELL!!

  • Oh sweet. They got those new WiFi Guitars.

  • Wonderful Video - I've Never Seen Them Perform On TV - I'm sure this is a Very Rare Performance Indeed - So glad you posted it on youtube - Thank You!!!

  • I'd rather starve than lipsync.

  • they should have at least plugged the cords into the guitars

  • Love BOC but they must of be Burnin cuz of the Lip syncing

  • they are great

  • They should of worn blue jeans and t-shirts

  • total lip sync job.

  • The one thing this "suit" had right is that "Fire of Unknown Origin" is a classic....and my favorite BOC album!

  • Lead singer is lead guitar. along with drummer, he is the boc.

  • @frankho99 I always thought the lead singer and rhythm guitarist, Eric Bloom - was with them since they became known as BOC.

  • Milli Vanilli Cult?......lol

  • Buck's face at 4:36 = "I can't believe are we doing this great song under such creepy/sleezy conditions?"

  • @gingermol76 LOL..........nice catch. That's hilarious.

  • @gingermol76

I agree but what they were wearing looked more ridiculous, they did what they had to do for the "big green machine" - MONEY !!!- ....I saw them live in the mid 80's Canada Wonderland (Kingswood) concert - cool show.

  • Wow.....I bet the whole band would like this video removed from Internet and any other means of access. I've always liked the band but not quite so proud to admit that after this 'masterpiece'. Lip synching to 'Burning for You' in silvery glittered garb......love them 80's!

  • @osterholz87 Back "in the day" many bands would perform the song live and then "lip-synch" to it. That's why many Don Kershner (or whomever) performances weren't like the "album" but the were "lip-synched"

  • @DickLodge68 Yeah, those "Don Kirshner Rock Concerts" were mostly embarrassing, tho Wikipedia tries to say many groups performances weren't lip-synched. He just died a few months ago, btw. Discovered the group Kansas, so he wasn't all bad. Made the Monkees a hit, too!!! Lol!

  • jesus christ this is disturbing.. and a bit embarassing

  • This is just plain disturbing... hahaha I love Blue Oyster Cult, and their music is so incredible, but their manager hyping "Don't Fear the Reaper" for Merv Griffin so they could lip synch and look like dweebs? They look like an incredible band desperate to capture something they don't need. Perversely fascinating.

  • sausage wallet

  • Even though they are "playing" to a track -- it's cool.

Always great when you hear fills and the drummer isn't doing one -- and the guitars aren't even plugged in ;-)

  • who dressed the band, gaydiscoman?

  • Buck had no business wearing that silly shit on stage. Dude looks like he came from a disco.

  • @baredd79 Isn't that Eric Bloom in the gold glitter outfit?

  • @nuwavevidspud Nope, it's buck.

  • @baredd79 thank you. I always thought Buck Dharma was the one who wore sunglasses & has a goatee.

  • @nuwavevidspud NP. I was a little confused at first. Both Eric and Buck sing the songs. They take turns. Buck has the lighter voice and plays lead. Eric has the heavier voice and plays rhythm.

  • @baredd79 thank you

  • 'stache syncing

  • hooray for awkward white people! What a charismatically challenged band! where they this lame in concert? Maybe they were just sober.

  • hooray for awkward white people!

  • This is almost as bizarre as Husker Du on the Jaon Riveräs show.

  • The guy in the beginning reminds me of Ed Begley Jr. in "A Mighty Wind."

Either that or Artie Fufkin from "This is Spinal Tap."

  • I always forget how gay our clothes were in the 70s......they were amazing, weren't they?

  • Cool. Thanks for posting this!

  • BOC on Merv?!!!!! To you kids out there, this would be like Slipknot on Oprah.

  • @trotp3 How about the time Jimi Hendrix was on Dick Cavett.

  • It's really crazy that Blue Oyster Cult would appear on a show like Merv Griffin.

At best, Buck might be singing live to playback (meaning his lead vocal is the only thing live), but it sounds like the studio version to me. And you can tell the backing track has to be on tape, because of the rhythm guitar during the verses. I think Buck said it's virtually impossible to recreate that sound onstage, so they don't even try.

  • so cool.. playback way back then...............

  • oooooo playing to the recording. NOT COOL

  • @jkjl234 so what???? we al lknow they sound great live. they probably just couldnt be arsed to soundcheck!

  • @MAGNUM2F nothing anybody can say will change the fact that a band playing to the recording live is not cool at all. bands need to play LIVE when they play live. it's called performing. im sure BOC didn't do this a lot, but this performance is disappointing.

  • @jkjl234 Yeah your certainly right about that mate, however, sometimes its the tv studios that make these rules, maybe there was no proper set-up/ fake instruments. 40 years of good performances make up for one bad apple.

  • @MAGNUM2F totally, blue oyster cult rules

  • deaf people in the audience loved this....merv griffin closed captioned! killer tune though

  • That's show bizz!!! This is the worlds most underrated band.

  • you can deff tell hes lip syncing lol

  • I always knew Merv worshiped the Devil.

  • @castingtherunes whos merv

  • @rocknroll14live From the Merv the Perv show, popular in the 70s.

  • Ahhhh the 80's were and rock guy could wear a space suit with a huge mustache and still play killer guitar with great melodies rhythm and leads. Now its black shirts.

  • Gee - sounds JUST like the record! lol

  • Was Merv trying to resurrect a dying show by trying to become "hip"?

  • @BARRIEMOREBARLOW Merv was pretty contemporary for what you might think. He had FZ on also (with Kenny Rogers and of all people, JJ!)

  • wow, this brings back fond memories of watching this with my grandparents, when this was on. they were regular watchers of Merv, and my grandpa being a fine music connoisseur, turned up the volume on this. didn't wince or criticize , just smiled and said, they weren't bad.

  • @swans1997 You had cool grandparents!! Although we now realize how silly and awkward this was, you shed a different perspective on it. We would listen to my Dad's favorite music during my teens in the 70s, he would point out the great songwriting(now a lost art), then he'd have me play my favorite rock music, like the Moody Blues, Beatles, etc. and we'd sit arouund just enjoying it on the old stereo's turntable. Music is one of the ties that bind.

  • @scubarulz ha ha you got me thinking about the time when VHII came out, and i played some of it for my dad, ha ha. he brought out his in a gadda da vida lp ha ha. needless to say, i dug that one more.

  • Sell outs and souled out!

  • dam, what a sell out, they should've done this for "solid gold"!

  • Actually @5:00 you can see it's Albert. He get's introduced on part 2 if you can find it. TSR

  • For BOC fans, a BOC historian will fill you in...single was released late summer '81. The release coincided with Heavy Metal(the movie). This was probably filmed that fall after the movie's run. Albert Bouchard had just left, and I think that's Rick Downey in the video, but the quality is so crappy I can't tell. In those days everything was synched and mimed, by command of the douchebag executives. TSR

  • @TheTScotRhys I think that's Bouchard on this video. He used to be on AOL and I remember once in a while chatting with him

  • I wrote this in response to another post about BOC. But I actually remember running home from school to see this! I have been trying to write this for an hour. The utube censors and limits are driving me crazy. I used to play baseball with Merv Griffins son. The BOC were on his talk show a long time ago. It was an embarrassing lip sync manager intoduced debacle. I tried to send a link but it was shot down. Just search for Merv Griffin Blue Oyster Cult and see what you find. 8 minutes ago

  • @1277express2 was not most bands back than a lip-sync thing on tv?

  • Imagine moving all those amps in there, just for a lip synch!

  • @deadflo well i'd heard rumours...

    merely rumours...

that they used t' pack buck dharma...

    in those empty marshall cabinets...

t' cut down on tour bus logistical probs...

  • @deadflo LOLOL! No doubt!

  • @deadflo TV is funny

  • Even the finger slide on the strings is noticeable here just like the recorded version. I think lip sync. Love the song.

  • wow they moved all that gear to end up lip synching!! that's pretty lame innit?

  • ahh shucks

  • Say thanks for part one where's part two

  • @enguwu They hammered me with don't fear the reaper copyrights.

  • @HarlJHogg persay you were doing 'a review on it

    ;)

nothing to do with boc just a review about VHS and their classic quality ;p

  • One of the best jobs synching, total band I ever seen,I wonder how many of the guys Merv hit on...??These guys were pros,I definately looked up to them and they have my respect!!

  • at 4:20 buck gives a "wtf am i doing here" look, they were very unexcited about the lyp sync

  • I dunno teh newer drummer kicks ass

  • They did the best they could at the time during the disco era. Screw popular taste.

  • shame it's a lip synch-buck dharma is an awesome guitarist that i doubt a live version would have sounded screwed up. but the whole band looks like "we'd rather have had a root canal without novicaine..."

  • Back then, it wouldn't be novacaine... it would be COcaine, lots and lots of cocaine, lots and lots.........

  • i miss albert.

  • Buck really loved lip-synching. can you tell? Buck ROCKS!!!!

  • Was this recorded after the split with Albert Bouchard?

  • This was 1980 or 81

  • MORE COWBELL!!!

  • They're not really performing live....they're lip-syncing and pretending to play their instruments....the song sounds exactly like the studio recording. I wonder what year was this.

  • you know what i think youre right cus i hear the piano and theres no player after the beginning

  • holy shit, he's like 4 foot tall. I thought I was watch a parody with midgets.

  • lololooooolll oh shit that was funny!

  • Watching Don lip sync is just too funny. I can tell he was trying to keep from laughing.

  • i swear this sounds exactly like the recording, i just saw them last night, and they were amazing, i swear they sound so fucking good!

  • Band name idea: Buck Dharma's Porn Stache

  • Thank goodness SNL had actual live performances by artists! :)

  • except for ABBA

  • Too bad that it's lip-sync. They are so greatly talented.

  • Man i hate seeing buck in that odd gold disco shirt , saw him to many times all in white with a white sg when they were flamin the crowds.

  • @atltom58 Yeah, for one of rocks greatest guitar players, it was pretty sad. At least Bloom looked cool (he always does).

  • BOC was never on Midnight Special but did Don Kirschner's Rock Concert.

  • BOC "Live" sounds remarkably similar to their studio sound. BTW I just luv Merv's suit lining.

  • wow how rare! BOC on TV!?! the original line-up and at their last minute. you people don't understand just how weird it is to see this underground band surface just before imploding. it's like an east coast band's premature 'touch of gray' moment. good to see but they were always a live concert band. strange presentation of a great band miming a rare radio hit and studio classic at the end of their glory days.

  • more cowbell???

  • more reaper

  • I love this guy talking them up lol, who the hell is that their manager or agent....? That was just odd.

  • @codythunder

It think it was a Radio consultant dude named Cal Rudman

  • I was there.

  • Here boys and girls we see the results of taking a rock band out their environment by the Big Corporate A-holes to squeeze every last cent out of their investment, by over commercializing a band, and further more exposing corporate greed by putting them on Merv's candy ass show.

Things have not really change today - that being evident in the main stream shit the corporate man pushes on a impressionable generation of media addicted youth, who swallow corporate shit as if addicted to crack.

  • Tell me I just didn't see B.O.C. lip sync. What the hell, they still rock.

  • @gingermol76 They were lip syncing? I couldn't tell

  • @gingermol76 I've seen them live, I have live albums, and I've heard the studio version more times than I would care to count... this is sad.

All I can figure... pressured into by Kal and the rest of the likes. Totally sucks though.

  • @gingermol76 Just what I was thinking.

  • @gingermol76 that wasnt lip syncing, they were transmitting theyr holograms onto the stage from a ufo, and it was a technical glitch

  • @longfootbuddy good call - right out of Star Wars and enhanced by a lot of keg beer from the College Days in the Midwest.
