What He was saying is that: If you speak in a language that is unknown to others that hear you; You only edify yourself because they that hear you cannot understand what you are saying. It is impossible for one to speak a language that he himself cannot understand. If the sounds you make from your mouth cannot be understood by no one. Paul says he speaks in tongues more than anyone else, but the context of the passage is what about in the church, I am from far east i see this very fitting, where many unbelievers present in the church if they hear all speak in other tongues wouldnt they say we are mad!! which paul mentions in the chapter, but Paul rather prefers *another* gift be used in the church which is prophesy before unbelievers so that they may fall on knees and acknowledge sure there is God in the midst of the church
