It's about killing your girlfriend, by the way, after observing her for a while from a distance. Most likely to prove her faithfulness. Watch and learn/ burning it blue refers to an expression "burning hot with a blue flame" which means to be virulently angry. And the bit of only shines/of distortion might be referring to a blades edge as that contorts the light it reflects which would make sense with the chorus and all. Oh and he leaves the phone off the hook so no calls can be received. U mad?
What's the point of listening to art if you don't try to figure out the motivation behind it? Patton's an evil genius and i like how not cliched he is.
Kinda reminds me the band Team Sleep, Featuring the singer of the Deftones, Rob Crow, and Zach Hill among others (I think..) Check them out, really good stuff.
This song gives me this dark and gloomy feeling, just like the world itself is ripping and scratching itself from it's colors. Slowly fading away and then remembering the only good thing that was taken away from you! It can be anything but it was taken away from you and you want to kill every single person in the world and be the only one.... Then it suddenly stops and you are gone.
I love the middle of this song, the rest of it.......... annoys me. The main part to it, like the guitar/piano part and drums is Awesome, but the random scratchy voices annoys me. Still Awesome!
@BabyMorse To enjoy patton you should open up and be free... "don't be afraid..." in the words of TOMAHAWK. you can't judge a sound by, well, the way it sounds. It should be interpreted like words in a poem.
@tegartyred67878 Oh trust me I love patton but some things just annoy me, I don't know why. I'm always up for listening to any of his stuff, because he's so unique. And this song is so cool, just the scratchy parts annoy me, but after hearing it again it kinda fits i guess. Ah well, the song is still awesome.
one of the best songs in the last 20 years. if you don't get it, you have not listened to it enough. it moves me in a way that the best of pink floyd and tool do.
@Toolband42O - Wait.. you have "actually" been to a Tool concert and that was the first time you saw a band get booed off stage? hmm.. must have been your one and only Tool concert then..
@riznich You're way off on your analogy. I don't think Patton can play drums like Danny Carey, or play guitar like Adam Jones, or play bass like Justin Chancellor. His singing is, to me, equally as good as Maynard but in a different aspect. But comparing any band that Patton is in to Tool is like comparing apples to oranges.
@riznich I fell ya trollin'. But unless you're a musician yourself you can't say that any band sucks, because you, yourself sucks at being a musician.
@riznich Tool doesn't have anything left in them and they haven't for over a decade. Justin Beiber might still have something to say to the world. Tool doesn't.
Patton, on the other hand, still has a fiery love of music and art in him. Meanwhile, Tool can't even fake it anymore with their knock-off Quay Brothers tripe.
I think I agree with you about this being my favourite song by Mike Patton as well. I love all of his work and find it thoroughly interesting, but I always come back to this song. I nearly died when it came on during the credits to The Darkness, haha.
Best video game ending song ever.
