Actually,if you watch the film in slow-mo,the head does go forward before it explodes.Kennedy isn't "thrust" back,he collapses due to his injuries and the explosion of his head.

At the time he was recalling a a little 14 second strip of b&W footage. He was wrong about the first shot as well as the last shot. i just think it was a poor description of what he had seen is all. The enormity and circumstances of this story were the first real challenge for reporters in news to get things right on tv, as a medium. The JFK killing was perhaps the final phase in television coming of age. Up through and especially at this moment, it was new, not more than several years old for many households, and for those involved in that industry, was unavoidably experimental.

The simple truth is that Dan Rather made two crucial factual errors in two big stories. The first one about the movement of JFK's head is noted here. The second one being the story about George W. Bush which was later proven to be totally false. There are two explanations--carelessness or deliberate lying. I would like to give Dan the benefit of the doubt and call it carelessness. Comfortable? Now think about the book depository where you can relax, get the gun ready, watch for the motorcade and spot which car he's in when he's on Houston. The simple truth is that Dan Rather made two crucial factual errors in two big stories. The first one about the movement of JFK's head is noted here. The second one being the story about George W. Bush which was later proven to be totally false. There are two explanations--carelessness or deliberate lying. I would like to give Dan the benefit of the doubt and call it carelessness. Either way, its not flattering and has badly damaged his and CBS' credibility!!!

Then when he turns onto Elm you're ready to take the shot. There's a miss, then the throat, and finally the head, but then again he wasn'y the best.

A steel-jacketed round is specifically designed NOT to fragment. An MC round tends to perforate without leaving a trail. The round that hit JFKs skull disintegrated an left a VERY discernible path. MCs have been demonstrated to break up, IF they do, into a handful of relatively LARGE pieces + perhaps a few grains here and there, but nothing like the "LEAD SNOWSTORM" effect FOUND in JFK's skull.
