No. It needs pedals. e-bike is a great concept...adding a small electric motor to an existing bicycle. Adding too much power means it is no longer a bicycle. Taking off the pedals means you lose the capability to pedaling when the battery dies. Oh, this is cute, but it is a girl's bike minus the pedals. Not really innovative at all.
i have an electric bike, but to make it go you have to pedal. it goes 35 kms/hr. its nice when i drive through the city, i pass cars, they get stuck at lights, i just go, and never see them again. its faster than driving or taking the bus and free which is also nice. cold in the winter though, and cant drive in rain but its great and saves money when its not raning!
HA! This is the only reference of an ''EV'' that's linked with VW. They are going to fall behind, they can do much better. They can't live up to the ''most environmentally car maker'' standards they view themselves as.
Produce it in EU and US ! doggy eaters never will buy it. They love to pull rishoes and ride 1930 bicycles ! I repeat . SHAME ON YOU American and EUROPEAN cars factories ! Keep on crushing our economy with nice ideas like this.
I converted my bike to a 36 Volts 15 Amps, and i love it! I purchased the best Battery, travel 32 miles distance at 22 miles per hour. I sold the bike at E bay and make a profit of $950.00
0:54 Nice, but there is no pedal, so that means there is a battery. Where is it stored? Each wheel attaches to wheel rim at one side only (force is uneven), so motor can't be very strong, can it?
I wish they included info about the range and speed of the bike, or if it keeps a charge while stowed. I'd rather have some hybrid that I can pedal on level pavement, but don't need to kill myself going up steep hills. Or at least pedal after the battery dies.
@MrSHITTYSHORTS Dude you are just being ignorant. Electricity is not a limited supply you idiot. This invention also has practical benifits. In case your car breaks down you can just take this out and ride to the closes station. Also if you have to cover a long distance you'd get tired after some time. This thing can you help you cover that distance with hardly any effort. It's also much mobile. And if you care so much about how fat you are how about walking or going for a jog? Try it.

I like all these ideas. What i don't like is their price tag and their focus. The same people who have the ability to build cars running with pure water or hydrogen come up with these ideas to throw ashes in YOUR eyes and make you believe that cars can only be moved by fossil fuel thus the only getaway are these 2 wheel full of risks vehicles. And worse part? They are all concepts. They spend millions of dollars/euros to research the idea, patent it and put it in the drawer so no one can have it.

YEAH!!! That's a great idea :) ... Lets just take everyone that uses a normal bike that requires no electricity and that doesn't use up are limited electricity supply and just replace it with a shitty bike that uses the opposite and says its helping the environment and for some reason it sounds better. And WTF how fat are we?
@MrSHITTYSHORTS The point of it is that it doesn't 'just take everyone that uses a normal bike' does it. It makes people who NEVER get out of their cars think there may be an option other than sat in the car burning fuel & wasting time. You got this totally wrong I think. Also why can't it be charged using a solar panel? Wind turbine? In what way is electricity limited in supply exactly? You can even get electricity from rotting vegetables, waves, sh*t, wind, sunlight!
@MrSHITTYSHORTS it's not about replacing regular bikes by electric ones... but think about how many ppl have to go long distances or climb hills and they rather do it by a motorcycle or an automobile.. i think the main concept is to make people use more this electric bike for their daily uses rather then a gas fueled transportation system.. and we have the concept of hybrid bike that just gives u some extra power so you could climb hills or gain some nice velocity but doing some exercise as well

@MrSHITTYSHORTS are you a troll or just ignorant? an electric motor requires less energy than the human body to travel a similar distance, so in comparison, ebikes are actually better for the environment than regular bikes, since they have a smaller footprint than regular bikes.
Also, OUR electricity supply isn't limited, at least in any practical sense. Electric power can be generated quite easily.... it's not like there is some finite amount of electric power that we are running out of lol...
atm energy is limited because of governments spending all their money on investing in cars. If they start investing their money in electric cars, bikes and more electric resources this will be a possibility in the future. Maybe this isn't the best way and solution but they're going about it the right way. And people that uses bikes will still use bikes i think this is aiming for the maybe older or people using cars, people using cars will get as fat as people using these bikes

Can get up to 32 mph an on one charge that bike set the new record of 86 miles. Hope it becomes a big hit. In California many people like Busettii because they cost around $1700 but can go 50--86 miles on one charge depending on model. Maria in Cali
@fabianoasc I like this innovative and creative bike, mostly the fact that you can pack it and take it everywhere easily. I'd really love to have one of them. And I agree with TheBazillion: they should not forget the "pedal" option, just in case...
É LEGAL QUE UMA GRANDE EMPRESA COMO A VOLKSWAGGEN ESTEJA PENSANDO NO TRANSITO DO FUTURO!!!!A BIKE VAI SUBSTITUIR O CARRO E TODOS TEREMOS UMA DESSAS UM DIA!!!
@zookiable I totally agree. The fun in using a bike is cycling it and not looking like a sedentary person who can't bother to pedal his own bike. Finally, by seating there and not pedalling it you won't generate any heat. It's non-viable for cold countries. Now if BMW target it to the elderly then I think it's a very good idea.
@zookiable Your view on bike usage is rather... blind. I use my bike to go to some place quickly, not to exercise. And also because it's fun and easy to park, cheap and pretty low maintenance. Most people I know don't use it to exercise either. We use it for TRANSPORTATION.
An electric motor might be quite useful in some situations (although I would find it unnecessary if I already had a car).

This is not a bike! Isto não é uma bicicleta. É uma moto sem placa, quase uma mobilete. Bicicleta tem pedais, exige um minimo de esforço... Bonitinha, mas ordinária
Awesome idea and should be extended. Electric bikes arre more energy efficient than humans and the carbon footprint will be lower -especially when the rider is not vegetarian and as the proportion of electricity from renewables increases. Power consumption means that most commuters would use less than 1kwh per day and this can easily be supplied with P.V. from local sources, at which point the CO2 emission is very low indeed. Humans = <25% efficient. Battery electric now 90-92% efficient.
Sorry, that´s not a bike, a bike get´s it´s energy from the person who drives it. This is a very thin electric motorcicle. Now everyone calls them e-bikes because it´s trendy and the attention that REAL bike movements around the world are getting. But this thing moves basically on an electric motor: that needs batteries, and batteries are NOT very friendly to the enviroment. I do not like it, sorry.
@TripulacaoQro With respect to your environmental concern, you are completely wrong. Batteries are increasingly compatible with the lower carbon age and they are less and less toxic, now that lithium and recycling are increasingly the norm. The comparison with human power is very favourable to electric. The reason is that increased physical effort always results in increased calorie consumption, and research does show that more activity causes more food intake which is very energy expensive.
First of all, it is still not a bike since it depends on a motor and not it´s driver for it energy.
Second, there is a lot of goodwill around recycling batteries, i live in a third world country and i can tell you we are FAR away from an ideal managing of these materials, as most of the world is. Not everyone lives in Amsterdam.
Third, lythium extraction is a serious issue of geopolitical problems, with it´s usual costs in control, militarization, etc.
@atbee and last, The comparison with human power and electric power it´s very relative. The energy cost of producing the energy for the bicycle driver is ver different from the USA to India for example, i think it is inacurate to generalize.
This VW "bike" a cool transport for many people, and a good idea for certain drivers. But i still feel it´s not ok to call it a bicycle.
The idea is great. The fact that you can "fold" the bike and pack it (or take it with you at the work place for example) is awesome. However, whenever thinking about electric bike, one must have the option to use the pedal in case you run out of energy. I'd totally buy one if it's priced reasonably!
@TheBazillion yeah thay should add pedals and a small alternator so when it goes dead you can pedal which moves you and recharges th batterys to :D but still if it resonably priced i would get one
VW is so retarded, they own Lamborghini, Bugatti and Maserati thats not environmentally friendly and I heard that this does 3 miles to the charge and for like 10 years french bike manufactures already made a hybrid bike running on pedal power and an electric motor. VW is just clueless and smug.
Without "functional" pedals, it is no longer classified as a bicycle in the U.S.

@fabianoasc I like this innovative and creative bike, mostly the fact that you can pack it and take it everywhere easily. I'd really love to have one of them. And I agree with TheBazillion: they should not forget the "pedal" option, just in case...

theres no point cuz people use bikes to exercise also so the point of an electric bike is pointless!!
zookiable 1 year ago
@zookiable I totally agree. The fun in using a bike is cycling it and not looking like a sedentary person who can't bother to pedal his own bike. Finally, by seating there and not pedalling it you won't generate any heat. It's non-viable for cold countries. Now if BMW target it to the elderly then I think it's a very good idea.
BraziliAna 1 year ago
@zookiable Your view on bike usage is rather... blind. I use my bike to go to some place quickly, not to exercise. And also because it's fun and easy to park, cheap and pretty low maintenance. Most people I know don't use it to exercise either. We use it for TRANSPORTATION.
An electric motor might be quite useful in some situations (although I would find it unnecessary if I already had a car).

Aren't there a dozen folding bikes one can buy?
And this one is special...why?
Because it fits into a little well?
Because it's the same color as the car?

A electric bike completely defeats the purpose of exercising. It should at least have pedals to work manually, imo.

This is not a bike! Isto não é uma bicicleta. É uma moto sem placa, quase uma mobilete. Bicicleta tem pedais, exige um minimo de esforço... Bonitinha, mas ordinária. Alem de tudo consome energia...

TripulacaoQro 1 year ago
@TripulacaoQro With respect to your environmental concern, you are completely wrong. Batteries are increasingly compatible with the lower carbon age and they are less and less toxic, now that lithium and recycling are increasingly the norm. The comparison with human power is very favourable to electric. The reason is that increased physical effort always results in increased calorie consumption, and research does show that more activity causes more food intake which is very energy expensive.
atbee 1 year ago

@atbee
TripulacaoQro 1 year ago
@atbee and last, The comparison with human power and electric power it´s very relative. The energy cost of producing the energy for the bicycle driver is ver different from the USA to India for example, i think it is inacurate to generalize.
This VW "bike" a cool transport for many people, and a good idea for certain drivers. But i still feel it´s not ok to call it a bicycle.
TripulacaoQro 1 year ago
This is best idea ever !!! Now you drive to bar and use the bike to get back home.
Warrantti 1 year ago
The idea is great. The fact that you can "fold" the bike and pack it (or take it with you at the work place for example) is awesome. However, whenever thinking about electric bike, one must have the option to use the pedal in case you run out of energy. I'd totally buy one if it's priced reasonably!

@TheBazillion It's free with VW vehicles.... soon
Boehm92 1 year ago
@TheBazillion PEDALS needs some extra mechanical complements, thats the problem.
sardakuar 1 year ago
@TheBazillion yeah thay should add pedals and a small alternator so when it goes dead you can pedal which moves you and recharges th batterys to :D but still if it resonably priced i would get one

VW is so retarded, they own Lamborghini, Bugatti and Maserati thats not environmentally friendly and I heard that this does 3 miles to the charge and for like 10 years french bike manufactures already made a hybrid bike running on pedal power and an electric motor. VW is just clueless and smug.
