I don't think DeNiro has surpassed or wll ever surpass his performance as Jake Lamotta.

I am a big film buff and for what my opinion is worth - I would say that this performance is the pinnacle as far as cinema is concerned.

@insertintube Very similar- Emotionally strained, self absorbed, illogical, lonesome, delusional yet realistic - both Travis and Jake rely on human nature, their surroundings and instinct alone. In my opinion their as good as each other, both films are in my top ten and probably top 5 personal selection of all time. Bob De Niro in my opinion is better (as a method actor) than Brando (yes i know it is a controversial view point).
