RDJ never will compare to this man. I hate it when I look up Sherlock Holmes and the piece of shit movie that RDJ played in as a guy named Sherlock Holmes pops up.
Jeremy Brett forever. I respect RDJ's acting skills but he can never amount to how Sherlock Holmes was supposed to be according to the books (since Jeremy Brett carried around a copy of the stories and made sure it was true to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's image). I do blame the writers and the director more for that atrocity though.
Dr Watson is also the "every man", representing the views of his times, ... to show Contrast with Sherlock. He is highly respectable, poor Mr. Holmes, is frequently stuck all alone while his partner is sleuth is spending time with his wife and kids. Sort of reminds me of Master Samwise (Sam)from the Lord of the Rings; folk tend to forget that the sidekick is a family man.
@MrsSherlcokHolmes A lot of women fainted back then for several reasons. 1.The weaker they seemed to men, the more men would take care of them and sometimes they just liked to be touched by a man. It wasn't accepted otherwise. The waltz was consider scandelous when it first came out because a man had to put his arm around a woman. 2. A lot wore corcets(sp) as having a small waist was considered pretty so they tied them too tight and cut off air. So the more excited they got the more they faited.
@Kaydenthedude in the first episode his needle and cocaine were laying on the table in his room when Dr.Watson went in to get him.... Dr.W saw the stuff laying out and left the room.... Sherlock is not ill, but stoned.
@bronteteri Actually he is ill. Watson and Holmes speak clearly about his condition in the beginning of the episode while they're riding to the Musgrave residence in carriage.
I get so tired of Holmes going "aha" and giving these totally illogical statements that are onkly true because the writer wants Holmes to be right. Annoying.
i dont know why you people are jocking brett favre, when I first saw him acting as holmes, I thought he was annoying. But I guess he grows on you, sort of like an acquired taste. But I found something out about holmes in this episode that has been overlooked. DO YOU REALIZE SHERLOCK HOLMES CANNOT READ OR WRITE. I mean he's always asking for someone to read him something or to send a telegram, never himself doing it. Or maybe he just wants people to read to him so he can deduce
nah, the man has a thing for dramatics so he postpones the "aha!" moments until the other guys around him give up in trying to guess the answer.
it's a pretty good observation though...i half believed it because in nearly all the episodes they just him handing the letters to watson, who then reads them aloud to himself & the audience, but in FINA he writes Watson the "goodbye" letter.
my bad, i had just gotten into this whole sherlock holmes fandom recently and they abbreviate all of the cases to the first 4 relevant letters. FINA is short for "The Final Problem". I think the episode is on youtube somewhere, not sure.
Anyone watch holmes's face when musgrave is like, lets go shooting this afternoon? This moment is priceless, one of the reasons brett was so good. he gave life to holmes. in the books, that look would be passed by . . ..

I can't wait for the movie. This is what happens when the adaptation follows the original like a cooking recipe. That means no lame plot points like he died because he didn't know enough to prop open a trap door but asked a woman who hates him to hold it open instead. No lame fisticuffs with rabbit fighting moves. But keeping the quaint characters and cool backgrounds. And no Holmes giggling. That bothers me.
Did anyone else notice , when Holmes first enters the butler'e room; and the camera pans across the row of shoes. . . The last one, nearest to the nigh table moves by itself???
@beautifulpassion Brett is amazing. That was my point. He is the definitive Holmes. While 'RDJ' as you call him did a decent job, he is simply a different kind of Holmes. Be as bitchy as you like, but you don't know anything about me and are impossibly unqualified to comment on either my intelligence or my 'eliteness' in reference to Conan Doyle prowess. But thanks for playing.
"Gentlemen, I've no intention that this small, domestic incident should ruin your weekend. I propose we continue our plans for a shoot!" XD What a posh, insensitive cad! He's incredible.
I like the way Watson is taking care of the woman when she faints. It's neccessary now and then to remind people of the fact that he actually is a doctor with some competence of his own.
Holmes looks like that sort of thing happens all the time at breakfast! Love the way Musgrave doesn't know what to do so decides to ring the little bell.
I love how Holmes just sits there. Brett is the best holmes not just in how he plays him but in his physical apearence as well.

I hope this doesn't sound dumb, but is the part of Brunsin played by Micheal Cain?

Richard Brunton is James Hazeldine, a veteran British television actor since 1970. He died in 2002.

That's too bad that he died. He is a badass actor.

IF this followed the original like a cooking recipe like you say, Then why is Watson figuring into the story?

I think that's because it's on Holmes's foot. The last pair of boots in that row are the ones he's wearing.

ie with you it was holmes feet, because you can see inside the others and not in the last pair!!!

I love this Sherlock Holmes Series. They not only reflect the original novel very well, but you see the English culture of the late 19th century.

All women are mental in these stories. If they manage to face a bit of adversity and not go gaga they are like heroes, right?

LOL nothing more Holmes like than peacefully smoking a cigarette while a woman is practially having a nervous break down before your very eyes.
