They believe in warding of evil spirits.The black or yellow talismans will heal the cut as soon you pull the weapons out. This is an old science in China & went to Thai and! It may look strange to Westerners.

you can also see the same in the Thaipusam fest, so it is NOT just a China or Thai origin but a S. Indian one as well. The Indians do not use the yellow talisman but just ash to sanitize the wound made by the fearsome weapons of war.

I've lived on Phuket for many years. The origins of this festival are correct as described by another poster. HOWEVER. Even the Thais are now disgusted with this spectacle becoming ever more extreme (3-4 people die from these piercings every year) and shun it. It is Chinese based (the Chinese making up at least half the population of Phuket) and the piercings are based on a Hindu tradition, taken to extremes by the money grabbing Phuket (specifically of Chinese descent) Thais. Keep away.

@anniyan619 the spirits of "ma song" pick humans who 1) are dying from sickness 2) are virgins 3) have done many good deeds through their life. The spirit then enters the body and it will take about 3 years to know which spirit it is. The spirit has a person (non-spirit) who takes care of her/him and if the spirit wants to do any piercings which might be for good luck etc. they will discuss it and they will discuss what they would want to pierce.

The festival is especially bizarre considering what kind of materials the devotees (called -the soldier of god)(!!) push through their skin on different parts of the body, primarily around the mouth region. The festival rather looks like a gathering of masochists.

Its a form of folk Taoism. The story is that this village had a plague and these taoists created this ceremony to get rid of the plague. Its really a vegetarian festival. I know it seems strange. I think the festival had move away from its original intent and has become too "show off".

I believe its called the Phuket Vegetarian Festival. There is a few youtube videos on it. Its practiced mainly by the Chinese in Phuket Thailand. I think some Thais are also involved with it (mainly some trance medium women).
