steven screwed a bit in this song...he was to druged up by this point, so the whole band was all over the place cause Guns relied completlty on the drummer to keep the band in time...thats what slash says anyway, I think it still sounds great!
i feel bad for steven, he screwed up his life so much, he got paid 30 thousand an episode on dr drew and wasted it all...he just played a venue that wasnt sold out and my band had more people attending than him, he probably could make money and more fans by going around and doing clinics about not doing drugs
@95glamrocker What a childish, petulant and narrow minded outburst that was!! Don't like it when someone has a different opinion than yours you self righteous, insecure, emotionally retarded little cocksucker. Stop projecting your insecurities and sexual inadequacies onto me or anyone else sunshine cos you WILL get your ass kicked sooner rather than later. I have an opinion therefore I can express it so behave like an adult or go suck fathers cock just like you always do. CUNT.
@TheGibson5150 alrighty mate, let me tell ya a couple three things ok? You sound like the one with insecurties and problems. The guy just expressed what he thought, dont be so fucking sensitve, you sound like a bitter old man in your reply. Do us all a favour and pull that giant stick out of your asshole ok? The new mettalica album is ten times better then that crap axl spent 15 fucking years on.
Steven Adler was a very limited drummer and certainly pissed on his chips during this period. No wonder they threw him out after this, it's just shameful. Matt Sorum was a far better drummer and they would never have made use your illusion with adler. Axl obviously had a vision for Guns which went so much further than the blues based rock n roll that they were doing at the time and I like Chinese Democracy (better than that piece of crap Death Magnetic anway) so people accept it.
@TheGibson5150 You do know that it was Slash & Izzy who turned Adler onto drugs, you cant blame the guy for being addicted to hard drugs he didn't want to do them, he hrew up twice after taking "Mr. Brownstone" which was offered by Izzy Stradlin. The greatest GNR album is Appetite for destruction, FACT!
@Crazybananaladyman It was his choice to try the drugs. You said it yourself, it was OFFERED by izzy. They didn't hold him down and inject it into him. And unlike anyone else in the band, Steven couldn't get out of it, and according to ALL the others, he could've done more. But he didn't. You can't blame your addiction on someone who offered you your first shot, it was your choice. Being fired from THAT band for doing drugs is weird, but he didn't have the strength or the will to get it together.
steve is / was amazing drummer, just look how easy it is him to play, althought he is high at that moment...howeveeeeer, he's great...stupid junkie, but good drummer!
Can't help but think Adler is full of shit when he said he'd never even heard this song before.
He knew it.
And why would Axl, Slash, Duff and Izzy want to look like idiots in front of millions of people if the drummer didn't know the song? Doesn't make sense.
I have trouble believing Adler hadn't heard that song before though....it's doubtful he'd have known enough to play those half-not triplet fills during the guitar solo if he hadn't at least HEARD the song before, ya know?
I was thinking about that the other day, it's hard to believe that he could fill the gaps if he hadn't heard the song before like at the end of the solo he hits the cymbal 3 times how could he do it?, just by drumming intuition?, I don't know....
@axl171999 I honestly do think its dummers intuition......i mean you can clearly see duff and izzy instructing himthe beat at the beginning justlike he says in his book
@royalslack I thought that but after asking a few drummers they say it's not too hard once you know the time scales and you can improvise the fills. I'm not a drummer but that's what I'm told.
adler always had a smile on his face when he played the drums, sorum was kinda like the tin man from the wizard of oz, and i personally think adler was a better drummer
Sorry for the negative mark Nighttrain, I agree this was the last real GN'r performance.
Sorum is a much better technical drummer than Adler, but Adler has a way better feel for the flow of the tune. Sorum can play very mechanically at times, and he is the only drawback on the Illusions, since all the other guys are at an amazing peak in their music.
The reason the Illusions were as great as they are, is the song writing of the core members, not Sorum.
i agree with the part that Sorum used to play very mechanically at times... totally agreed... Adler had a better feel of the drums, and different style of playing
How was Matt Sorum Axl's little bitch at all? Sorum was fired for arguing with Axl over Slash's departure and he was fired for it. He wasn't Axl's little bitch at all. Thought i'd prove a point :)
Axl and Steven never got along to well, they have very different personalitys. Steven never thought twice about telling Axl what he thought about him, and Axl being very sensitive and difficult guy to get along with. Steven never understood Axl's way to be.
Sorum was a far better drummer for gunners than adler ever was. It's shown through the 2 best selling albums Guns n Roses ever wrote, Use Your Illusion I and II. Steven was a great drummer but there is no way that he could ever live up to the legendary Matt Sorum.
steve is a fucking amazine'n drummer... matt never looked like a member of guns n roses,, and in my opionin never replaced steve,,,, altho he did fall his way on stage here and his time'n was well of here and in civil war,,, duff had to keep getting him back on track here,,,, but listen ,,,slash had his of nites too and axl,,izzy and duff too,,,,fuck it its an awfull pitty steve could not leave all the werid shit that comes with drugs alone,,,if only...
I find Steven's drumming a lot more exciting than Matt's and the sound of Steve's drums was way more interesting. Don't get me wrong Matt's a good musician too but The Cult feats him a lot more. I think maybe beacause The Cult is an alternative goth rock with a bit of prog feel to it and GNR or VR are straight forward R&R. Steve's just harder.
I just love when the TNN logo flashes near the beginning. I can't imagine how many old rednecks spit out their budweiser and said "what the fuck is this!?" when they watched this.
i agree with druidasur....and crowley7483....its not about technique fucken idiot....its about fucken soul.....he was the heart beat of the band....and although sorum played harder....he was not better fit for the band....he seems like he goes all out....and steven was nice steady and went all out when needed....cause if the drum beat is fast....the rest needs to follow...and thats not they needed
sounded similar to the album version to me. I was told the reason he was replace was because of drug use not his playing. I'd really like to see anyone play a song they dont know in front of thousands of ppl. just my o
Ok you listen, Steven never even knew the fuckin song plus they never practiced before the gig and Steven's drumming might not be as good as Matts, TECHNICALLY but it will always be more heartfelt.
sorry but im a drummer and i hear that he know the song about his drumming and fills and stuff. thats a tempo question... and he was fired a couple weeks later because his drug problem
and and and i see that he aint so energetic as usual + he fell of in the beginin of the concert
me too but i think he just wasn´t ready for big stadium tours especially with a drug problem but.. every his bänd mates was in drugs one year before exept axl but i understand the problem they had with several warnings of fired him
however steven gonna play a track for slash new solo album ´respekt
That should be cool. I guess hes supposedly off the heavy drugs now so maybe the original lineup will get together for a reunion tour the only one thats holding them back is axl. hes the only one who doesnt want to..
This performance makes it crystal clear why Matt Sorum replaced Steve Adler. The rest of the lineup should not have changed however. I was priveledged to see this band three times. Once opening for Aersomith and twice as headliners. They were great all three times but Matt made a huge difference.
a singer should never pull a song out of his ass during a live concert knowing that his band might not know it. steve did ok. having said that, though, steve's playing never progressed to the point where he could keep up with muscians such as slash, duff and izzy, who are, in their own right, greatly accomplished artists. granted they lost an integral part of their raw sound when they lost steve. but you can't fault anyone who can pull off those sexy-ass jeans the way axl can....
I saw steven in a drum clinic last night, during question time he said this was one of his worst gigs, he got halfway through the song before recognizing what it was, Duff had to clap the beat at him, despite all this i'd say he did very well, considering the circumstances.
if i hadn't known he didn't know the song, i wouldn't have realized that he didn't really play all that great to be honest. but, yeah, he did ok. he and duff were really in tune with eachother when they playd.
VERY cool clip. I was born and raised in Indy but had moved to GA 6 years before this, and made it home to IN for the Farm Aid IV concert. Plus, I helped build the Hoosier Dome and this was my first time inside since construction had been completed. GnR also played Civil War that night.
just what I heard I wasn't there but I still listen and love there music. just think Axl is a big ass . I just know what everyone said and they had to go off air because of his mouth.
some of you guys have good ears and hear that steven sounds good here...i think the other guys were off and blamed steven....same thing on civil war from this gig when slash starts the song too slow!!
what were slash, duff, izz and axl complaining about the drumming there rocks. and this was the first (and only) time steven adler played that song. firing steven was this bands biggest mistake.
Es un concierto para beneficiencia de los granjeros en no se que parte de USA la verdad no me acuerdo. Fue la ultima vez que Steven Adler toco con Guns.
Good on ya Gun's & Roses. This is agreat version of the song off "Endangered species" UK Subs. the only song where i know all of the lyrics and still makes me laugh!
Dude...your not going to wait around for someone to get clean...that takes a LONG time. And he's STILL not clean of drugs. Adler was slipping up on the drums and couldn't play. Axl did what he had to do, and it turned out for the better.
man I realize Axl's quite a jerk. Even fucked up as he was Steven is far better than Matt, Axl should've given up that stupid idea of touring all the fuckin' time so as to giving steven time to get clean and not drove Izzy nuts !!!!!!
stephens way better than matt, matts got no groove when he plays drums, and for some reason they gave him a shit drum sound when they played live as well
Theyre both great drummers. Steve is great here becuz he had never played nor had he heard "Down on The Farm". The band told him they were playin it right before they ran out on stage. SO he pretty much improvised the drumming for the whole song. Awesome.
I´m not a drumer so I can tell about techincs... but I love Adlers original beat fuck!!! There´s something about original GNR sound Sorum never could recreate...
Steven played in my country about 10 months ago and he was great! he is rock n roll !!! Sorum is a great technique drummer but Steven has got what you can't learn by taking lessons and that is FANTASTIC BEATS AND ATTITUDE!! Hope you get well soon man! you are a good guy and deserves the best. We are with you!!!!
Always loved the fact that even though they were a larger than life band they still had quite a knowledge of good punk rock. I just saw the UK Subs a couple years ago, and there still great!
I saw this live on TNN. Dick Clark was hosting and he let out this loud groan after Axl's GFN shoutout and the station cut to a blank screen for like five minutes as I imagine everyone in the broadcast booth had all lost their lunches at the on- air f-bomb!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
They were a great studio band but live they suck. Axl can't sing live. Then this song sucks, but that's cuz i hate punk.
twistedrain888 3 years ago
axl cant sing live? hahahaa ... i wonder how they got to be one of the most important band of all times
franckmercado 3 years ago
listen to down on the farm on record. then you'll realise why axl is singin like this.....
vincentbbx 3 years ago
This was a terriblr version on Axl's part, he was just shouting the words and looked very uncomfortable on that little stage - he likes BIG ones!
Never usually dresed that 'country' either
spongebobaxlpants 3 years ago
listen to the Stdio version. its the same.
the song has no tone. ^^
AxlNSlashDuff 3 years ago
what were slash, duff, izz and axl complaining about the drumming there rocks. and this was the first (and only) time steven adler played that song. firing steven was this bands biggest mistake.

Es un concierto para beneficiencia de los granjeros en no se que parte de USA la verdad no me acuerdo. Fue la ultima vez que Steven Adler toco con Guns.

I think this version better than on the spaghetti incident album Pop corn is better to play a fast song than sorum
attis88 3 years ago 4
this songs got a great drum beat and i like the guitar sound
madmonkeyman77 3 years ago 2
Dude...your not going to wait around for someone to get clean...that takes a LONG time. And he's STILL not clean of drugs. Adler was slipping up on the drums and couldn't play. Axl did what he had to do, and it turned out for the better.
as4174 3 years ago
man I realize Axl's quite a jerk. Even fucked up as he was Steven is far better than Matt, Axl should've given up that stupid idea of touring all the fuckin' time so as to giving steven time to get clean and not drove Izzy nuts !!!!!!
druidasur 3 years ago
Steven is not better, he just fit better
zivadira 3 years ago 2
then he is better anyway !!! isn't he?
druidasur 3 years ago 2
stephens way better than matt, matts got no groove when he plays drums, and for some reason they gave him a shit drum sound when they played live as well
Callaz3 3 years ago
I agree even slash admits that adler gave appetite that energy.....
and if stevens drumming on this performance is bad, then what did they make of axl's vocals.....
gillo69 3 years ago
Theyre both great drummers. Steve is great here becuz he had never played nor had he heard "Down on The Farm". The band told him they were playin it right before they ran out on stage. SO he pretty much improvised the drumming for the whole song. Awesome.
Marineincident91 3 years ago 3
Izzy left because he hated touring more than Axl. Adler is not as good as Sorum tecnically, not even close
crowley7483 2 years ago
I´m not a drumer so I can tell about techincs... but I love Adlers original beat fuck!!! There´s something about original GNR sound Sorum never could recreate...
druidasur 2 years ago 5
what a lyric to sing in the Live Farm Aid !!!!!
druidasur 3 years ago
Steven played in my country about 10 months ago and he was great! he is rock n roll !!! Sorum is a great technique drummer but Steven has got what you can't learn by taking lessons and that is FANTASTIC BEATS AND ATTITUDE!! Hope you get well soon man! you are a good guy and deserves the best. We are with you!!!!

Always loved the fact that even though they were a larger than life band they still had quite a knowledge of good punk rock. I just saw the UK Subs a couple years ago, and there still great!
Mozzer232 3 years ago
this is a tru jam right here
steven has said that he never even heard the song before
and yelss to duff asking what the fuck to do and duff
amazing
exodus666 3 years ago
Seriously???? Holy fuck, he does a better job on this than Sorum's on the "Spaghettii Incident?" album.
Jamo28hhh 3 years ago
I saw this live on TNN. Dick Clark was hosting and he let out this loud groan after Axl's GFN shoutout and the station cut to a blank screen for like five minutes as I imagine everyone in the broadcast booth had all lost their lunches at the on- air f-bomb!
