If anyone is interested, two biographies recently came out - one completely about Rory by Jean-Noel Coghe, translated into engllish - it is excellent, full biography, great photos too. The second book is "Gallagher, Marriott, Derringer, and Trower" by Dan Muise, and is more various interview notes with their bandmates and friends/family. I bought both of them at barnes and noble dot com.

@FabiofromSirius This is great, but this is definetely his best performance of this song: (dot)youtube(dot)com/watch?v=bP0jbUV8DcM It's excellent! Wonderful intro aswell
when they asked Jimi Hendrix how does it feel to be best guitarist in the world he said: I don't know ,why dont you ask Gallagher :DDD jimi is still best but to take that big compliment from that big star its more that too much !
@ivanvalusek the hendrix story is an urban myth. it never happened. the story has him saying it at woodstock or on dick cavett. and sometimes in a rolling stone interview. also the story has several different guitar players named. the closest to the truth is dick cavett asked hendrix how it felt to be the greatest guitar player in the world. hendrix replied he is the greatest guitar player sitting in this chair. only known quote about this he said he liked this kid in texas billy gibbons
@MrAngrygary Well, to quote the famous J. Ford: "When you have to choose between the truth and the legend .... print the legend."
:-)
This being said I think there was enough verifiable appreciation bestowed upon Rory Gallagher from such famous axe slingers as B. May, Slash, E. Clapton, G. Moore, J. Page ... that he can be without a doubt considered one of the all-time great guitarists. And his reputation and legend is still growing these days (this final appreciation was long overdue though).
@Tokeiihto13 i agree rory gallagher is one of the greats. i am a huge rory fan. but before i could repeat this story to others i felt i needed to verify it. which i proved to be not true.
i think that the guy that made whiskey ,travelled in the future ,listened to Rory and when he returned started working on some idea ,about something people will drink when listening to this GOD. Eternal Glory to Him!
I asked a guy what he thought of Rory Gallagher as a guitarist. He said that the Gallagher brothers (Oasis) are shite guitarists & don't deserve recognition as guitarists at all..... should have slapped the silly fucker around for associating Rory with Oasis
Probably the most underrated guitarist but then I think he'd prefer it that way. Back in the 70s I saw so many bands, mostly in the Cork City Hall. Dylan, Clapton, Thin Lizzy, Status Quo, Queen, The Stones but Gallagher's Chrstmas/ New Year gigs were always the best. I still find myself looking out for posters advertising his concerts.
Rory Gallagher, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Frank Zappa, John Lennon and many more ........
Got such a good style, defiantly underrated. Used to think Jeff Beck was underrated which he is in mainstream but there are so many more underrated guitarists like Rory who just don't get the recognition out side guitarist circles they should do. I think Jeff Healey is another example of a massively underrated guitarist...
you can't say that some guitar player is better then another. what do you guys know about guitarplaying that u start to judge other famous guitarist just because they were more famous, rory went his own way and wasnt of course so mainstream like hendrix or clapton but he still left a footprint in rockhistory, a quite deep one for those who arent just "consuming" his songs.

Simply the best! Not Hendrix nor Clapton etc. Rory was and is the best! When you play the guitar, first of all you must have feeling, not speed or appearence. I wonder if there will be such music o guitarist in the future.....
always brings a tear to the eye. he may be gone but aren't we lucky he lived long enough to have recorded some of the most beautiful music ever heard. rory kept it real and listening to his music keeps me sane in a world where we are bombarded non-stop with nonsensical bullshit
I´ve seen him 4 times in Germany and I´ve learned to feel the music with my heart and soul. I visited about 200 concerts with all the great combos, but Rory´s were the best.
There are so many really fantastic guitarplayer, but Rory will be always the Godfather of guitar. A million miles away but always in our hearts. We will never forget you and thank you for the best and most emotional concerts ever. I´ve seen dp, lz, rs, pf and so many others famous and fantastic combos, but no one could reach the intensity of your pure music and emotions.
My favorite version of (a million miles away). Rory is the best at playing this style of music. Leaving Rory out of the top 10 greatest guitar players goes to shoe how under rated he is. If you don't make it big on the radio chances are you don't get recognized in the music industry. His music lives on therefore Rory lives on.
I knew of Rory when I served on Embassy Duty as a U.S. Marine in Malta. That was 1985 and I haven't looked back YET. I can't wait to go to Cork to visit Rory and pray to him.

fascinating to read some of the comments on this today... in the year 2009..i started playing in a rock band when i was a punk kid in southern California back in the early 1970's..of course it was mostly about hard rock.Somehow, i got turned on to Rory Gallagher and everything changed..keep in mind he was rather obscure from the mainstream, when we started playing a bunch of his songs as a party band, nobody knew what the hell it was.i saw him live twice,
Million miles was my favorite song. Played it in E minor. time goes by, things change, and then one day i heard he had passed away and realized that I had forgotten how important he was to me. so, kids... live it up!!! and hang on to your heroes.
I've been playing music for 25+ years, heard of Rory probably somewhere around the time I started playing, but never HEARD him that I know of. Read article in Guitar World on him and said ooh... youtube... and here it is... awesome!
Funny you should say that. I have a pretty powerful power amp, a NAD 2200, and this song is one of the few that causes the protection relays to open up, to keep the output transistors from over heating. The only other song that does that is the live version of "Astronomy" off the Blue Oyster Cult's 2001 CD, "A long days night"
jizz in my pants for the guitar tone.

I've been playing music for 25+ years, heard of Rory probably somewhere around the time I started playing, but never HEARD him that I know of. Read article in Guitar World on him and said ooh... youtube... and here it is... awesome!

buy yourself a original cd and let your amp melt away!
The only way to listen to such great music!
