Those of you who think you need to "dominate" your dog need to educate yourselves on the latest studies of "domination." All this vet is teaching is how to make your dog fearful and eventually will probably become more aggressive toward you.
@Kgoody70 No not at all. Just watch how a mother dog diciplines her puppy's! Of course you have to be the dominant pack leader, especially if you have a large dog. I raised all my big dogs like this and let me tell you they where scared of no one, just try breaking into my house see what happens to you. A dog that knows its place is not an agressive dog but respectful, I can put my hands in all my dogs dinner bowl when they feeding they just wag tails and carry on feeding, no fear just respect
@MrNativeDancer And one more thing, my dogs will follow me every where, if they feared me they would run away. Please watch how wild dogs deal with each other. its by growling and if that dont work then they bite. I am not saying to beat a dog up, but you have to make sure they know humans in the house hold are the leaders even a 2 year old kid should be able to tell a dog to sit and the dog should respond. Its about being a respectful owner that knows about dog psychology and how they work!
@MrNativeDancer I suggest you watch the dog whisperer Ceasar Millan before you make comments and do more research. I have had dogs for as long as I can remember, I grew up with some pretty big ones that my parents owned, none have ever bit any one. A dog that thinks its the boss in the house is likely to bite some one or even a severe attack, this is not acceptable by any means. Its not fair on the dog either because then they have to be put down by law if they attack some one for no reason!
Everyone here is saying that this doctor is wrong but no one tells how to properly train the puppy not to aggressively bite. How do puppies and dogs get trained in the wild? I have also had a vet tell me the same thing and he has wonderful dogs. Thanks
In a dogs world it's about dominate. If you don't let your dog know your the dominate person. He/she will always challenge you. Watch videos of multiple dogs and you will see dominate dog always pins down the one that challenges him. You have to act and speak dog language.
@diamonddust22 Lol or he put a hole in my shoe because he was a puppy who likedc to chew ass hat. Obviously you must have taken a blunt object to the head if you think that is anywhere close to bad ownership...ignorance is a bliss and you are a dolt.
DUMB OLD FUCKTARD!!!!! I cannot believe people do this to puppies. No wonder dog bites are prolific in this country. "Bite proof them for life?" More like, teach the puppy that hands coming toward them = pain and fear.
@HopeGarlick Right and it's really hard to get a dog that can't think to do your taxes in April and bring snacks from the fridge during the big game. ;-)
For the most part, I agree with you, ljbndjb. However, experience with a lot of dogs in my life (sled dogs, working cattle dogs, hunting dogs) has taught me that some dogs simply are born aggressive. They want to be dominant, but don't have the, shall we say, doggy-charisma to make it happen, so they get nasty. Or, yes, sometimes you end up with an adult dog that has been made fearful and aggressive. Sad, but the dog still must be broken of it in order to be saved and safe.
Puppy biting in play is a natural behaviour.Yes a puppy needs to be TAUGHT it's inappropriate - but this method is NOT the way to do it.Humans expect dogs to live by our rules,to live their entire lives without ever losing their temper when we never expect that from another human being.Punishing only suppresses behaviour-a growl is a warning, punish a dog for growling, it will skip the warning and go straight to bite if pushed beyond its tolerance. Build tolerance, not punish the behaviour
This is the worst advice out there. It will create a hand-shy,fearful puppy who does not trust you and is scared to do anything or make a mistake. It will set you on a path where punishment gets increasingly harsh until your dog is a nervous wreck and far MORE likely to bite.I know this because this is the advice I was given four years ago and I am still repairing the damage I caused to my dog in the first year through bad advice like this. Dominance-based "training" is unnecessary and dangerous.
Actually, an aggressive dog does need to be dominated, as it would be other dogs. You, dog owner, MUST be the dominant alpha-dog. This vets advice is some of the more gentle I've seen for aggressive dogs.
@MsPuppyperson Aggression is a natural dog behaviour, usually displayed when a dog is fearful "I'm scared, back off and leave me alone" or to perhaps to say "this thing is mine, leave me alone", or "I don't like you, go away". A dog needs to be TAUGHT, not "dominated". Work out WHY a dog is aggressing, and not label it as "dominant" or "aggressive" which just masks the underlaying problems.
This is really dangerous advice. I would advise the vet in this clip to visit the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behaviour to learn about the way that he should be practicing.

This causes pain and fear in your dogs I'd never do this to a dog.

Absolutely ridiculous. That is completely the wrong thing to do when a puppy is biting you. Disgusting.

Dominating is not the way, it does not teach the dog to think for it self!
