Too few people see this kind of interview with this much truth. I wish the extremist tea-partiers enjoyed the truth as much as they worship Fox Noise. If that would happen, then progress could be made.
I was part of the leadership of the anti-war movement (SMC) at the University of Texas 1969-71. I was definately aware of Chomsky but didn't know about Zinn. Great man. At 62, I'm finally reading his books. Today is 9-11-2010. I thought we had learned our lesson in Vietnam. I never thought that the American public would be hoodwinked into another illegal war and elect someone as stupid as Bush. The Dems have blown it. I gave $500 to Obama. I'm back to being a democratic socialist.
I wish Amy had asked Howard about one of his books not mentioned "SNCC the new abolitionists"--folks who want to know about this heroic organization should read it! God Bless you Howard.
I see that you are pulling other things than cherry blossoms out of your butt. How about trying to use your brain, and stop being such an anti-semite. There are absolutely no facts in your statement.
@atlantoon Strange talk from a DemocracyNow! fan! Her April 13 birthday is probably square to your apparently Capricorn birth, so there is some natural annoyance. But hurray for Amy's natural beauty. She did buy long boots currently in fashion.
What would Dr. Zinn say about the supreme court decision giving "free speech" rights to corporations? It just doesn't make sense...how can money be speech? I guess I am a mute b/c I am broke with my student loan, day care, and mortgage payments. I THINK DR. ZINN WOULD SAY, "THE RICH ONLY HAVE POWER IF THE PEOPLE BELOW THEM OBEY." if I notice that poverty and infant mortatlity rates are sky high does that make me less patriotic? or a hater of America like Martyshack says below?
@RiverBlanket Abso-f^*&ing-lutely, completely-f*&^ing right! I have been wondering that for the past 9 months! I just keep thinking to myself: "So... corporations are people. They are not getting the right to free speech... And money is the way they speak?" I wish corporations would speak to me.
I watched this last night on free speech tv....Dr. Zinn was the BEST, just like Naomi said he was the BEST TEACHER. I really admire him, his courage, his words and his wife. God Bless everyone touched by this beautiful man's life prayer. ah ho
People, I think the best way we can honor Howard Zinn's memory is by moving now to press our political leaders to do what we, the people want. R.I.P., hero of democracy, we will fight on!!!
Martyshack717 isn' worth the time, its obvious he is a coward and is intellectually impaired not to mention ethnocentric (regarding the America reference). Next thing you know he is going to make the accuasation that he was a racist as well. Howard Zinn will live on in all of us, I bought "THE PEOPLES HISTORY OF THE U.S." for my children and nieces, straight A's in social studies baby. LIBERTY & JUSTICE FOR ALL= HOWARD ZINN
His life proves otherwise, he sang "America The Beautful" in Vietnam when he went there to free some POW, that is just one small example. Dr. Zinn is also a decorated WWII Veteran. He improved our country with the truth, I encourage you to do your own fact finding mission on this Great American Hero. I served in Desert Storm for my country it hurts to hear you say that about a true partriot. I just have to wonder where you got your information.
God Bless Dr. Zinn. He was a combat veteran & most of all he was a decorated intellectual commander in the war for true deomcracy, freedom & justice for all. Howard Zinn is America! how can anyone say we was against it. He dedicated his life to the truth. Turn off Fox News &CNN&MSNBC & all radio talk shows so that you can detox off the propoganda of the ruling class. How come there aren't any famous professors from the right? Because becoming a professor requires critical thinking skills?
@RiverBlanket What is right/ left? It seems that most of academia is deafening silent. Right/Left are equally responsible for the imperial atrocities. Is there a difference between obama and bush?
i don't think obama or gore would have built the case for pre-emptive invasion of iraq.... they definitely wouldn't have told our allies and the un to go to hell.. i'm not sure any republicans would have except for this patch of neocon shit we've had lately
Nonsense. We are on the ground. 4 US soldier died this week in Pakistan. They "let" us because we would have done so anyways. Invading another country, and killing their civilians is ok for obama? At least Rep. are unabashed supporters of conquest, the dems pretend to be anti-war then are just as pro-war as repub. Fake party politics. Two legs of the same body. No difference other than what the tv conditioned talking points ppl mindless regurgitate.
getting killed on the ground isn't exactly the same thing as attacking someone on the ground, it's just getting killed by a roadside bomb. pakistan has been an ally in hunting down al qaeda for a while, it's doubtful fear has anything to do with it. besides, it's not preemption even if they didn't feel like they had a choice because theyre still officially agreeing to it, among other reasons why its not preemptive war
Why do ppl try and defend war bc their policial party supports it? Like obama gives one iota of a fuck more about americans than bush did. You have to have soldiers invading another country to get killed by a roadside bomb?! How is it not pre-emptive. Did Pakistan attacj america? Did the Taliban? No. Pakistan is helping us, and agreed to lest us in. Yeah according to our whitewashed media. Reality is we sat down and said we are going into your country whether u like it or not.
RIP Howard Zinn! Yes, only massive movements from below can bring about change...and there will always be setbacks. Change does not come about from within the established powers - it comes in opposition to it.
That first chapter on Columbus in "A Peoples History..." will blow your mind as Zinn tears apart the very myth of America in front of your eyes. Read it. Read it now.
We have lost the greatest inspiration of our generation by simply letting us know of other inspirations... regular people standing up and doing whats right! His writings are genuine and heartfelt, he will be truly missed and I hope more will read his books, especially 'Peoples History', its great to have that HBO special too, wonderful stuff. RIP! NEVER FORGOTTEN!
Howard Zinn was a GREAT American, and I am honored to have been introduced to his works, his truthful view of American and world history from the view of REAL people rather than corporations, when I was an undergraduate at university... He was an amazing scholar who revealed the flip side of history that is rarely sanctioned by corporately sanctioned academia... He has done America a great great service by reminding us of our true past...
as a bombardier in wwII. He had no apprehensions, he said, until after the war when he was reading the stories of Hiroshima survivors, and then made the connection of his own dropping napalm on Royan at a time when the war was certainly over. He was beaten by police in Boston for protesting the Vietnam war, I don't think he would shrink from calling out fascism/imperialism, as promoted in A Young People's History " This is the way to live. Brave! This type of education can prevent a 'Hitler'
@AmericanCritiquer I went out to the library and got it. Im on chapter 5. Good read and shows the other side of the story like excluded women, slaves, indians from the declaration of independence and how the rich used poorly educated mobs against others.
I am an Australian and found Zinn one of the clearest thinkers on the modern gold rule "we cant do war anymore" if we are to survive.
I want to say god bless him but i am an atheist

Thank you, norehct. I was familiar with most of that. However, in an interview above he seemed to be saying no war was justified.
He said, "War, even so called 'good wars' . . . don't solve any fundamental problems and they always poison everybody on both sides . . ."
That's why I asked the question.
