Barlow looked very much like Count Orlock from the 1929 film Nosferatu. I did like the makeup though and it is and was very scary. This attempted suduction scene by Danny Glick made me think of a slight homosexual seduction. Although there were no sexual intonations toward Mark, i felt a hint. It was more clear when Ralphie came for Danny.
@ohiospankster I see your point about meeting in the Church. I just don't think Marks parents really took him seriously!! I mean try telling your parents that you have just seen your dead friend in the window lol...They thought he was dreaming!!! That's why they had the priest come over and talk with Mark. Please remember the Petries didn't know there was a vampire epidemic going on. If they did they would have seeked sanctuary in the Church i'm sure.
Good point though, I don't really think Straker was mortal he took 6 gun shots, and the way he picked up Susan Nortons father!! It was like he weighed 30 pounds lol..Where did he get that kind of strength?
@ohiospankster Yes they should have been in a church, but they don't live in the church? So it would have been just a matter of time before The Master vampire entered the home of Marks parents!! Either way it was now or later.
Scary shit! I can remember watching this scene on CBS as an 8-year old. Eyes glowing; scratching on a window; then the music. They don't do horror like they use to.
What if Mark opened the Damn window?? Because of his actions he got a visit from THE MASTER!! And the Master killed Mark's parents. Guess he should of opened the window.
@phantasm091 I read somewhere that it was to do with the casting of James Mason as Straker. Apparently they cast him first, before Barlow, but then they couldn't find anyone more creepy and foreboding than Mason. So Tobe Hooper went for the nosferatu option, where the vampire said nothing and Mason was pulling all the strings. But of course this changed the whole storyline from the book.
HOW COME the gravedigger dude just showed up inside the house of the old man teacher (in the rocking chair); Barlow crashes through the window of Mark's family's kitchen; there's clearly no "vampire must be invited in" rule, right? Then what about these scenes where the kids are knocking on the window asking to be let in? Why don't they just crash through the window? Ha.
My next door neighbours comes and knocks on my window and tells me to let him in. One guy on our block opened it nd my neighbour started biting him. He's not a vampire but he's a nutter and it still is pretty freaky
eh y'all are too easily scared. :D the only vampire that wuz actually any cool at all in this movie wuz the master. but he wuzn't scary and neither where those. but it's still a good movie though.
@markyhitch This made or really this scene makes you kinda too paranoid to peek out the window late at night huh??Kinda like right now!!Wholly shit!!What the hell was thing??LOOK!!!!!
Great scene and terror movie..! Those Who saw it at that time, changed the way and feeling to look at the dark window in their room at the middle of the night... evil can reach children too... and not only the adults...thats why this movie is really creepy cuz int the past evil was only thought for adults and this movie shows could reach anyone... Super vampire book and movie!!!!
And - Danny Glick is coming over to Mark's place - this time in the middle of the night - whether or not to continue rehearsing lines for the school pageant - so it must necessarily be that Danny Glick has "finished his homework"; and so wants Mark to open the window to let him in. Danny Glick has " finished his homework ! "
A doll or pupprt thing like a boy dressed in a suit is part of the regalia in Mark Petrie's bedroom earlier in this production. It can be clearly seen as Mark recites aloud to himself for the school play.
I guess these vampires aren't the type to just smash through windows to get inside. Expect maybe that blue skinned Nosferatu wannabe, Barlow.
Imagine the terror if you hear a window break downstairs right after confronting one of these demons at your window. The next thing you know, there a pair of faintly glowing eyes off in the distance of your pitch black hallway pacing towards the partially opened door of your room.
@PrinceNoctisCaelum Well it's because of the times that this movie was made,it was then that authors told people through their books that in order for a vampire to kill you you had to be either outside or invite them into your home. Now for the sake of this movie that scared the crap outta me as a little girl this was a perfectly creepy scene as it did the same as The Exorcist did which was traumatize me into sleeping w/ all the lights on in my room until my folks told their not real. And you??

OMG! I was terrified of this as a kid! I was about six when it came out but didn't actually see it until about 5 years later. I never slept for ages afterwards!
All of this, literally frightening as can be,just goes to show how good a writer Stephen King is - focuses on things we had never given any thought to before and as a result scares the hell out of us.
I'm not familar with that one...I only know that this film -shown on TV at the time- scared the crap out of me; I was sure that King had come up with it. Yes, we should definitely read the book
@Waistgunner39 Look it up and you will see remarkable similiarities, Stephen King was influenced for sure. Also see Boris Karloff in The Wurdalak, a related scene with vampire child.
And I don't want to hear it from all of you King fanatics coming to his defense.
chelseagurl97, there is always influence of something else when people have ideas, whether you are talking about music, art, or writings. The writers usually take those influences and shape them into their own creation. There's nothing wrong with that. Just look at this film. It's obvious that the writers, producers and directors were influenced by Nosferatu instead of making the Barlow that King wrote of in the book.
Gosh this part of the movie terrified me for years after I first watched it. I believe I was about 7, and I was a huge S&H fan and didn't know what I was getting myself into. I couldn't stand for my curtians or blinds to be open at night,I was always seeing shadows and hearing things outside my window. That went on til I was probably 10. I still don't like looking out my window at night. It just creeps me out.
Gruesome dead pale face with wolfish yellow eyes and huge fangs, now this is a vampire, a horrible evil creature you want to destroy, not a love interest like in Twilight, where did we go wrong as a society? I guess vampires started going downhill with Anne Rice.
Rock on dood. They are demon possessed corpses that break your heart when they kill your sweetie or family member, and make desolate your neighborhood, and though so much more powerful than most people they are vanquished by humans who have their act together like Dr.Van Helsing or Ben Mears.
About two past comments. 1) It's the faith in the cross what reppels the vampire. That because in the book it speaks about good and evil not christianity 2) "He commands it" (the vampire master) and Mark fights against the vampire kid hypnotism
'Salem's Lot is the best Vampire book i've read. Psh! There's no way It is scarier. The only book that is scarier than 'Salem's Lot, is Pet Semetary or The Shining.
man when I was kid after seeing this did not want to sleep near window and made sure there was no spooky fog if I did..."open the window mark" the 4 scariest words ever spoken..still get goose bumps hearing now
This film, although a masterpiece by Hooper, is not scary. But I guess it's just me, because I hardly find a film scary. This film however, is one of my favorites.
Still guaranteed to make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck when it's late at night and the wind's blowing outside. I'm 36 and I don't think I could watch Salem's Lot on my own! It probably seems tame nowadays but if you saw it when you were a kid, I bet it left a lasting impression.
@pescatarian09 Most of us first saw this film when we were kids. I can't help but to think that the film, "Let Me In", may have been inspired by this one eerie scene. I could be wrong.
lol...i used to climb up 3 storeys to get to my friends window, used to scare the fucking shit out of them!! i used to wet my finger and rub on the glass slow n hard. when they got close to the window I slammed the window frame really loudly and screamed. hhaha...that was fun...seeing them fall backwards (like that was gonna help!)
SAID B4!If, now this is hypothetically speaking, a dead friend of mine, and I can very much appreciate that thay were GOOD MATES, came floating around my bedroom window, ''tssk' tssk'' ing to get in.... the only way on God's Holy fucking earth that the cunt would get in..... is if I had the POPE, the DALAI LLAMA & EVERY LIVING LEADER OF EVERY RELIGION.... To put some moves on that dead EX-FRIENDS ARSE!!! JESUS HIMSELF WOULD BE NAILED TO THE FUCKING CRUCIFIX I STUCK ON THE TWATS HEAD! BLESS!LOL
NAH, MATE... ENGLISH... WITH DRIBBLE OF OIRISH DER SOMEWHERE!!! LOL... Was a joke... I'd let the fucker in and cage him!! Heard fun fairs will pay a few quid these days for a good freak show exhibit... ermmmmmm... present company excepted... naturally!! lol
Take care.....
PS.. 'wet your finger and rub...slow n hard' are you sure u posted to the right video?? pmfsl ;-)
The 'haunting' music makes it scarier too, this is one horror film that made me sleep with the light on!! I wouldn't like to see it on my own late at night again....yeah I admit I've got a yellow streak.
This is taken from the 2 hour (German) edition. I recently purchased the full version on double disc.
Yes, there are a lot of differences between the full 4 episode-series and the TV-movie edition.
I strongly recommend anyone who REALLY wants to experience the unparallelled terror of the original Salem's Lot, to watch the 3 hour version. It has a lot more in depth for characterization.
this scene scared the hell outta me when I first saw it...the vampires in salem's lot are some of the scariest EVER, especially mr. barlow. I love the way tobe hooper changed his character from the book...Barlow is truly evil!
these windows scenes in this movie were extremely freaky, scared the absolute shit out of me and my brothers...i was nine..I couldn't look at my window for weeks. Great stuff however. I remeber thinking that 'mark' was unbelievably brave..

Was that vampire Mitt Romney as a kid?
castingtherunes 3 years ago 6
It took a TV movie of all things to get vampires right - nerve shatteringly scary! There was a lot of good TV horror movies back in the 70s/80s.
castingtherunes 3 years ago 2
that wasn't as scary as the book made it to be =( kinda dissapointed

I saw it in 1979, and it still haunts me, especially Barlow, and I'm also 38.

The 'haunting' music makes it scarier too, this is one horror film that made me sleep with the light on!! I wouldn't like to see it on my own late at night again....yeah I admit I've got a yellow streak.

I remember reading the book to this and thought that kid hd some serious balls letting a vampire in and shoving a cross in his face

It appears a small clip was either edited out or was this from the two-hour edition?
cowboyswin2007423 4 years ago
This is taken from the 2 hour (German) edition. I recently purchased the full version on double disc.
Yes, there are a lot of differences between the full 4 episode-series and the TV-movie edition.
I strongly recommend anyone who REALLY wants to experience the unparallelled terror of the original Salem's Lot, to watch the 3 hour version. It has a lot more in depth for characterization.

this scene scared the hell outta me when I first saw it...the vampires in salem's lot are some of the scariest EVER, especially mr. barlow. I love the way tobe hooper changed his character from the book...Barlow is truly evil!
scotros 4 years ago 3
Check out the boom that Danny is sitting on. Lol, should have spotted that Hooper!
dischordantbelief 4 years ago
Danny also says..."No, Mark." I didn't see that in this clip, what gives?
foppa123 4 years ago
You notice the change in sound. It probably jumped when transferring to pc from vcr.

Simply the best horror film and scene EVER!!! It maybe nearly 30 year's old but, for me it's the ultimate.

these windows scenes in this movie were extremely freaky, scared the absolute shit out of me and my brothers...i was nine..I couldn't look at my window for weeks. Great stuff however. I remeber thinking that 'mark' was unbelievably brave..

your right, the window scenes in the movie scared the shit out of me as well!!
jerndy1969 4 years ago
The music for this was great. It really enhanced the movie, especially in this scene. It was really scary with Danny's ghastly face and blazing eyes.
DBarns7 4 years ago
Personally I thought his brother Ralphie was scarier as a vampire kid.
SellawEvets 4 years ago
True enough, especially when Ralphie came to the hospital to finish Danny off. Quite terrifying.

I love This movie , many times I treated to remember it...Thanks, who is the actor (Marc)?
MEDELENA 4 years ago
Mark was played by Lance Kerwin; Danny played by well-known 70s child star Brad Savage.
SellawEvets 4 years ago
Brad Savage? that the dad of Fred and... cant remember his brothers name but fred and brother were quite well known too.
baz94 4 years ago
I believe that's Ben Savage of BOY MEETS WORLD fame.
SellawEvets 4 years ago
