with the cost of gas today, you might go for a month before your next fillup. Unless those models had turbo engines in 'em, you weren't goin' NO WHERE with a standard 2.2!
But the way they make the I4 engine TODAY, I'm shocked and impressed. The V8 might be nearing extinction before we know it. I drive an '04 Malibu Classic, and that thing FLIES like the wind, too!
I remember telling my friends in high school that my '83 Dodge 600 was "technically not a K-car but an E-car", trying to remove it as far as I could from a Reliant or Aries. But they didn't buy any of it. They were K-cars to everbody. It was a surprisingly ballsy car with the 2.6/ 2 barrel. I remember shocking a high school acquaintance who was a passenger one night by driving it through the police station parking lot and flooring it out of the entrance! "It really moves!" He owned a '74 Javelin
Montalban was a classy cat, man! Why Chrysler reduced their luxury cars down to K frames I'll never know. Shockingly they sold well in the 80s. And if those aren't K-cars, they sure resemble 'em BIG TIME! I had an '89 Reliant from '94-'97. Loved it, too!
Or sometimes the car would overheat and then it would say everything it knew. "Your door is ajar. Your engine oil pressure is low, Prompt service is required. Please fasten your seat belt. Your washer fluid is low. Don't forget your keys!" etc etc!!
I always thought they shoulda had Ricardo do the computer voice!
"Your door is ajar, have a seat on rich corinthian leather!"
Yeah, I always heard they had a problem with the 2.2 liters aluminum block always blowing head gaskets......(My K-Car was fine!). Mind you I also heard that that engine was pretty bad-ass with the turbo. they shoulda used an iron block (and better heads) and boosted the pressure a few pounds!
it kinda did, the new fusion has this welcome chime. so kinda not really. I would love to program my lincoln so that when i open a door it says welcome to lincoln mark viii
These are 1983 Chryslers: Note they lack wraparound tail lamps, which debuted in '84. I had an '83 wagon with the Electronic Voice Alert, a neat feature. Hearing the computerized "All monitored systems are functioning" dialog brings back fond memories. These luxury variants of the "K" car were awesome in their day.
Hmm, Khan, I mean Ricardo, and lasers.
Not as great as the Cordoba commercial, but still very amusing.

The 2.2 and 2.5s were iron blocks. They had aluminum heads.

Sadly, they became too annoying and too noisy for most of the technophobes that own cars. I wouldn't mind owning one of those, though.

I remember my grandfather having a New Yorker Electronic Voice Alert. He got a real kick out of it saying "door ajar"!
