  • Maverick Meerkat FTW

  • Slower is acceptable, the whole point of Xubuntu is it's meant for older, slower machines.

    Good video.

  • i have a problem with the resolution in xubuntu 9.10 in a dell c600 only gives 800x600 as the highest and i want it to be 1024x768 can somebody help me

  • nice vid mate,at least like me you do give audio too,as it is needed...

  • i newly installed xubuntu 9.04 on my pc, with 4 gigs of ram and a E8400 3.0 ghz cpu...

its a really nice linux distro extremly fast, and still not crippled..

  • So this version is SLOWER than 8.04?! Is the 9.x version supposed to have speed improvements?

  • Whats you pc specs?

  • how dare you to copy my style?

  • Agreed. I too found 8.10 to be slower than 8.04. Hopefully there will be some updates in the fear future which will speed up Xubuntu 8.10. But for now, I'm sticking with Xubuntu 8.04.

  • I tried it the only issue I had was it wouldn't install the nvidia drivers in the hardware manager so I DLed the drivers from the Nvidia website used the safe mode boot to get a text mode login and installed them.

I also had to do some work to get my canon MX700 to work but that's more Canon's fault.

Other then that it was bug free it ran very quickly on the AMD athlon 3800 test box after the video card had the right drivers.

  • right click and delete

  • When I check on the Ubuntu website about upgrading I read the release notes, and it said that Intrebid Ibex doesn't support Nvidia TNT, TNT2, TNT Ultra, GeForce, GeForce2, GeForce3, and GeForce4. It goes onto say that it does not support 3-D acceleration. Is there anyway around this?

  • yeah dont use the GNOME version

  • :/ I like gnome... but I think its going down hill... kinda sad...

  • So xubuntu 8.10 supports Nvidia? Will it still support my Broadcom chip? I would be more then willing to switch, but I have gotten very comfortable in gnome.

  • If your comfortable with gnome stay with it. I'm using it too, just on Mandriva Linux. It works great. Mandriva is like... 4X better than Ubuntu. IDK they improved greatly in the 2009 edition.

  • Mandriva was the first Linux distro I looked into, but I didn't like that you had to pay for it. I agree with the basic principal of over source, which is that it should be free. I have tried Fedora, but I didn't like it to much.

  • No its free. The PowerPack cost money. Just download the ONE version or the FREE version.

    Free = Completely Open Source

ONE = Free but has proprietary codecs and drivers installed by default.

PowerPack = End-User support and some main stream programs. (Basically made to support the community)

  • Does the ONE version require third party software to run restricted drivers? Can I still run WINE? Sorry for asking so many questions, how is the community support or does it have community support?

  • Its ok, I get lots of questions every day :)

The ONE edition comes with all proprietary drivers so you don't have to configure your computer (sort of like Ubuntu).

Yea, you can still run wine, it runs better under Mandriva than in ubuntu.

It doesn't have really good community support, but its pretty good.

  • Is it as dependent on the terminal as other distros? Just curious because of the community support

  • Nah. I never have to enter the term in Mandriva. I had to 1 time to fix a small problem in compiz. took like 3 seconds.

  • Hmm, when I get an external Harddrive to back up my pc, I might try it out.

  • I'm not having any problems with 8.10 yet

  • Linux nubs?

    You're running (x)ubuntu!

  • i also run fedora, puppy linux, and solaris on tht machine its just xubuntu is the fastest and i'm a speed hoar :P.

  • If you're a speed whore, try Arch or Gentoo.

Of course I don't think you can handle it.(it's a little hard)

  • gentoo is good but i perfer slackware over it

  • I've actually had a better experience with stability and Flash on 8.10. The only thing I don't like is the new network manager, and a few things in the newest version of GNOME.

Unfortunately, the new 8.10 release hasn't helped me configuring my microphone, but meh.

    EMZ=]

  • i havent had any flash problems

  • lol dude don't be silly.

There will ALWAYS be bugs after release, especially within the first week.

I have seen this for years with different distros. It happens.

  • exactly thats why im not downgrading yet

  • never tried xubuntu.. but ubuntu 8.19 IS FASTER than 8.04 ;)

  • lucas tobin - if you had to ask if that was chess, your a fuckin idiot, and you should end your life. fuckin moron

  • HUEHUEHUEHUE 6/10

  • Can't you just use Flash player 9?

  • yeah. but 10 is way better :P

  • Does 10 crash less than 9?

On Linux Mint, when flash crashes, flash just doesn't work and the the rest of the browser's fine. On Ubuntu (8.04), when flash crashes, Firefox crashes along with it.

  • in 8.04 yes on 8.10 hell no

  • Is that chess you're playing?

  • indeed

  • did you have to ask?

  • Yes.

  • A rule of thumb with Ubuntu distros; Use the second to the latest version, not the latest version.

  • lol seems like it

  • yeah its due to the fact that XFCE is faster than GNOME

  • Yea i notice some apps run fast and some slow. Is good to hear the truth, good or bad and not just hype ubuntu for ubuntu sake.

  • 8.10 broke my sound, graphics and apps randomly crashed when i edited the preferences. i had to wipe the partition, reinstall with 8.04, then upgrade again. now i'm on 8.10 with working sound and all that. it seems to take a lot less ram and seems to be more responsive for me so far. worth all that trouble? not really, but otherwise it's pretty good so far i think.

  • man i can´t complain, everything run faster for me... and i use ubuntu.

  • Ok, so let me get this. Theres KDE Kubuntu, Gnome Ubuntu, and than what is xubuntu?

  • XFCE

  • Gnome 2.24 is slow, tried X too, it was preeeety slow to be running on a SATA drive, flash support was much worse on x86 with 10 than it was with 10 on 8.04 even on x64. I couldn't work like that, jettisoned it and went back to 8.04. It felt like I downgrading back to 7.10. I HATE IT. I think the beta was better. It lost every original pro I gave it, but all it achieved is that it finally shuts my PC off. :/

  • whats wrong with hardy?

  • No I mean upgrading to 8.10 felt like going back to 7.10 and that the flash worked much better on 8.04 even if I was running x64. lol sry :P I talk to fast in type

  • 8.10 sucks ass on my PC. I hated it. Thats why I switched to Mandriva witch kicked ass. I switched to XP on my laptop today. I'm getting a good desktop to put Mandriva FREE on.... I may dual boot Mandriva ONE with XP.

  • I tried that last version and I got errors and shit

  • 8.10 or 8.04.1?

  • 8.10
