@warwinfieth I wouldn't! Sudden movement = spraying. My husband and I were in a screened arbor one night while camping and heard movement. My husband ducked out and lit the lantern. There was a skunk. It actually put it's front paws on the tip of my shoe and sniffed my foot. I sat perfectly still to avoid startling or frightening it. Eventually my husband threw water next to it and scared it away. I was so mad at him for doing anything that might have provoked it!

@warwinfieth I'm not particularly brave, I was petrified, I just didn't want to startle it and get sprayed. If I'd already been moving when I saw it I would probably have continued moving, in any direction that led directly away from it. Since I was already sitting still, and it wasn't alarmed by my presence, I figured my best chance of coming out unscathed was to sit still. You never want to startle a wild animal because their fight or flight instinct kicks in.
