I don't know every time I see a drummer that hold a left hand grip is kind of weird, it just me but he is good. Now a day when kid learn drums I think most of them prefer modern grip like right and left hand hold the same grip...
@majestytd depending on the style, traditional grip can offer greater sensitivity and response to the left hand, in most cases. Matched grip isn't exactly modern either, both grips have been around since god knows when and mostly it's all about preference. As a user of both I like to switch between grips mid-gig or mid-song.
@bankerdrummer Match grip has been around since ancient times, and Traditional grip originated out of the revolution/civil war tmes b/c they would have drummer boys that would play drum roll offs to tel them when it was time to fire, shoot, or retreat. The drum they carry was slung to the left of they sides, so in order to make it easy to play the snare with their left hands, they devolpe a style of playing the march drum call traditional grip. Match grip is the older of the 2.
i,m in orr of you mr Weckl,a truely great drummer genius on the instrument, its like you are talking to me, via the skin so interesting and never boring thank you the kit sounds amazing.
@julianisdope Dude what kinda DW do you play... DW's don't sound like cardboard, they sound great and have great tone. It all depends on the model and heads you play with. I'm sorry if you ever played a DW that sounded like cardboard but my collectors will never leave my possession, they sound unbelievable.
@ndw9311 i don't play dw....i have a set of sonor delites(incredible btw) Just not my sound man...it was just my personal opinion. Everyone is different and if you are happy with your dw congrats. Sorry i came off a little bit ignorant saying they sound like cardboard.....they do sound good but for me personally nothing beats sonor. Each to his own. Cheers for drums.
its a funny thing but ive never wondered what gear dave weckl uses. his playing is so inspiring that thats the only thing i think about when watching a video of him
Yamaha rules, but, I'm getting sick of birch, maple, beech, mahogany, you know, all the simple woods. That's why I prefer exotic wood kits, if Yamaha offered insane woods like Koa, Bubinga, Sycamore and such, I'd definitely convert.
@ShittyMcPoopyBalls the type of wood doesnt effect the drum sound noticeably. the quality of the wood does.
also exotic woods come from the rain forest which is bad for the forest because of loss of trees there and the transport causes lots of co2 emission. think about it.
What is the purpose of having two snare drums, iv'e seen a second floor tom on the left side which seems to make more sense, but dave's one of the best in the world so whatever works for him.
This man always sound good but from 15 years ago from now just unbeliabable, amazing and perfect, i saw 4 times live every 6 years and really, this man never stops, always going better and better.
when I did a clinic in vancouver, I had the choice of doing the clinic on a phoenix or the maple custom . I chose the maple custom cuz the phoenix had to much power and sound.
@170adamb It's the Dave Weckl 14" Maple Signature Snare.. This video was recorded in London so that means the snare is 5" deep. In europe we can't order the 5,5" version which he plays often. Although he always prefer to play on his aluminium Signature Snare which Yamaha doesn't produce anymore..
@MrDrummerguy33 hey there, the yamaha guys have already got back to me on this and its definately the Weckl sig maple im pretty sure there's never been a steel version.Dont worry though ive got a steel and maple snare and once its been recorded with a bit of studio magic i cant tell which is which lol

You know the PHX series drums already sound awesome. With Dave playing them, the drums probably sound that much better! It's like the new PHXDWKL series. This guy has been my favorite for almost 20 years!
lets not forget, the drummer and the tuning have as much to do with the sound as the construction. a bad player and poor tuning can make a great kit sound lousy, but a great player with proper tuning can also make any cheap kit sound relatively good. the differences in the super expensive kits are noticeable, sure, but more subtle than alot of people think.

@blaucha58 The word minority is not mentioned. I understand where you would get that, but that's not what I meant. They aren't Minority's, they are dumbasses. I play ALL SABIAN too. So let's end this here.
@tindrum You obviously do not know Mr. Weckl - great drummer, and better human being. YouTube is great for videos; unfortunately, too many Haters. Come on.
@coreybondurant ooh no dont get me confused with those bottom feeders, I have rarely seen him crack a smile and be "nice". I would however state that he is a phenom, always was a startling player. No dont mix me up with those guys...eeek, I just want to see some joy in him.
@tindrum Thanks tindrum for responding. I've studied with Dave and know him to be very kind, funny and personable. Attend one of his clinics and check the newer instructional dvd - lots of fun, smiles, etc. Don't get me wrong; he's a serious dude - that intensity comes through in his playing and virtuosity.
