That is why the Sil Lum monks used the animal system to coordinate people with complimentary styles. I.e.,a short stocky guy would likely study the tiger, whereas a tall skinny guy would benefit more from crane or mantis.I belong to Kyokushinkan International, and study under Fujiwara Shihan(Cromwell,CT.),who is North American Chairman. It works for me because I am more tough than graceful. To attempt flexibility heavy arts like Wushu would be ridiculous.I can sustain impact, why pull a muscle?
After several thousand years it is beyond obvious that there are siliarities amongst martial arts. It is sad to see, however, that people still think one system is better than another. For instance,a fighter skilled in tae kwon do would kill an unskilled m.m.a. fighter. If you suck at jiu jitsu,it is likely that you will eat your own teeth from a skilled boxer. Sucsess depends on wether the individual choses a system or set of systems that compliment his strengths and minimizes his weaknesses.Duh!
Seeing some of the comments on here just makes me laugh. If you don't have anything say about the video than don't comment. I keep seeing talk about BJJ and MMA. What the hell does that have to do with this video? Those of you who are saying BJJ and MMA will do this, still have a lot to learn about real martial arts and real life fighting.
@hakim0436 Pro killers? Assassins? Nice choice of words. You say how could Karate survive this long if it were not effective in combat? The same reason Sumo or Capoeria lasted, by becoming a cultural tradition and sport. karatekas are not useless against BJJ just at a HUGE disadvantage due to there lack of ground techniques. Gracie Jujutsu comes from Judo(not jujutsu as some believe) and Judo comes from various Jujutsu styles that are older then karate and also battle tested.
@Roccon79 And when did I say it shouldn't? But I agree every stand up style should include grappling and vice versa for ground fighters. But I find it funny you say if karate has no groundwork then it isn't true karate....But from what little I know karate since its beginning never including any ground work in the first place. True karates focus is to keep it standing
there is so much going on here, when these great masters show their skills. it seems simple, basic , even boring, but this is about structure and stance and mechanics. any martial artist of any kind would benefit from paying VERY close attention to what is going on here. this is a very different animal from what passes as Karate today, this is the real thing.
@hakim0436 Just because some fuckwit MMA kid talks shit about TMA doesn't mean that their approach isn't valid. MMA is a combat sport, and while many components transfer well to martial arts it remains a sport for many reasons. Rules and prohibition of maiming techniques, for one.
@LanLanW i though okinwan karate was combo of traditional tegumi(wrestling) southern chinese kung fu with a dash of tai chi seasoning. and browed weapons from indonesia
@LanLanW that too i just listed all the other down played influences first as the white crane one seems to be common knowledge. this is mainly because they had continual cultural influx form china till their annexation by japanese and even then they were still more chinese than japanese if u look at painting of ryukyuans ambassadors arriving in japan to meet the royal court the guards are carrying disticly Sino style pole arms. and swords. the ming dynasty
@LanLanW i said indonesia because of the Sai is of indonesian cultural importation since the onkinaways are using it thru karate while the indonesian silate guys use it as stricly as weapon on its own like how using a pistol and a shot gun require separt skills thats y the indonesians make use of the hooks on the guard and hook the two sais together to form as closed gaurd allwoing the checking hand to always be close to the lead hand
@LanLanW also it might just be a bunch of styles. no tai chi related as when karate first arrives tai chi wasnt invented yet unlike how the wudang folklore claims. the mind dynasy manuals from fighting japanes pirates states the they simplified and bunch of norther and suther style and came up with a more internal style based on senstivity drills semi grappling and a bid of striking and superior body positioning.
@LanLanW eventually the manual came to the chen family which already a long line of martial history. they invented tai chi thru experince with other fighters (northern shaolin etc.) and came up with tai chi. it was later on after the fact a bystander, wuxia author or a dumb misguided student the made up wudang stuff. sure they practice it there now mainly a chinese tourist trap based on fantasy(no saying that they arent good at i.t they are fuking good at it .)
the those comment are on how tai chi actually is more modern thant anything while the concept permiated thru chinese martil arts alread such as sensativity, bridging, and soft yielding.
@steroidsR4shitheads Is that before or after Gracie takes his steriods or gets his ass kicked by submission grappling and good strikers? :D Go hide behind sport rules favoring long term grappling, when I get sent to Afghanistan I'll stick to my Shotokan, TKD, Judo, and the instictives of boxing and wrestling :D
MMA is another more modern form of tournament fighting ie. sparring that is employed. To truly believe that MMA is somehow superior to good traditional martial arts training is ignorant and completely wrong. I would like to emphasize that good training means from a senior instructor (5th dan or above) with certified lineage to Japan/Okinawa or China.
MMA has a bunch of rules, while Karate is martial; life or death situations, including groin attacks, bear knuckle punches, elbow attacks, eye poking, grabbing hair, throat attacks, tearing-ears, biting, etc. which we can find a lot of deadly movements in Kata. So real serious fighting usually finishes less than 10 seconds. If that so, MMA's commercial sponsors must be very unhappy and many fighters would be murdered or have permanent injured.
Toyama Sensei died from pancreatic cancer on 10 April 2009 at age 81 (he was born in 1928). He resisted the disease for 9 years over his doctors' predictions. He was teaching kata 2 days before he passed.
Toyama Sensei was promoted to Judan by the Government of Japan in December 1998. He refused to accept the award of Intangible Cultural Asset for personal reasons.
Yes tomoyose was a student of kambun uechi he even talks about it . but his main teacher was his father ryuryu tomoyuse who was kambun's first student.

the main reason why most karate guys here are lard asses is ...its hard to teach, make money, and train with out being a full time school and good at it all....
If you grab a set of the rod of iron this device will make you hard as hell in just a few weeks add this to your training program and you will be hard to stop. not sure how he died, though he is not the last living student of master Uechi, Ryuko Tomoyose is still alive, Master Tomoyose is revered in Okinawa and mainland Japan. Master Tomoyose has been declared a National Living Treasure by the Japanese govt for having attained the highest ranking possible in both calligraphy and karate. He was the first student to be promoted to 10th degree, after Master Uechis passing. His father was responsible for Kanbum Uechi teaching in Okinawa
@uechiryujournal I thought that 10 dan was usually awarded posthumously. I thought this was the case in most Japanese systems. Is this also true in Uechi-ryu. (I really want to do Uechi-ryu; is there anything in the Minneapolis area?)

Its incredible to see someone who has dedicated a life time of study reach a level such as 10th dan. The best thing about all martial arts is that you never learn everything so you never run out of things to do. I started in Tae Kwon do and recieved my 2nd degree black belt in 2005. I have continued my studies now in Uechi ryu. Completley different styles but both very effective if used properly.
wow, he is quite good. Not to make fun, but he kind of looks like master roshi from Dragonball Z (I mean that in a good way). He demonstrates the style quite well (not that I've done it, but my school used to teach Uechi-Ryu alongside WTF taekwondo, but now only teaches taekwondo). Many of the old blackbelts transferred to taekwondo, and they are a blast to spar and they love to spar me, since we both can go full power. They have an amazing defense, but punches leave them slightly open.

@1970Claymore Not accurate of a few things, worth pointing of for historical ref.
Toyama Sensei was indeed the last student of Kanbun Sensei, Tomoyose was a student on Kanei, not his father Kanbun Sensei.
As well Tomoyose was never promoted to 10th dan in Uechi-ryu. Perhaps in the new Shohei-ryu system but not Uechi.
Hope that clarifies things up!
