Why are people treating this like it's sudden proof that global warming is a sham? The USA has always been a country with a decent amount of snowfall. There'll always be high and low points in the long term trend of snowfall. Anyone who sees the most recent high/low point alone and declares it's proof of a new trend is ignoring what science is about.

Not only that but it also only focuses on temperature change. What we need to worry about is the effects a change in temperature has on the climate and ultimately us.

@areyoulookinatmepal You're missing the point. Carbon fixed into organic compounds by, as in your example, the forests is only a temporary store. It's part of the carbon cycle, but the carbon source for fuel (coal, oil etc.) takes a massively long time to produce, wheras rates of extraction are high. Therefore deforestation or not the level of CO2 would increase.

It's simple. The Sun heats the planet and GHGs act as a blanket to trap the heat that would have otherwise eventually escaped into space. Too much GHGs traps too much of the heat and doesn't let enough escape. Thus raising global temperatures which can eventually melt the polar ice caps and cause flooding and extreme weather.

It's called "The Greenhouse Effect". Look up the planet Venus to see an example of a runaway Greenhouse Effect.

Claiming there's a internal fighting of scientists over whether or not it's real is as disingenuous as the claim right-wingers put out claiming there's a shift away from support of Evolution in science. There are no "30,000 scientists who disagree with global warming". Only a few hundred of those 30,000 who signed the petition were actual scientists. Less than 250 were actual climatologists.

AGW is about as unpopular or "controversial" among scientists as the Theory of Evolution. Meaning not very unpopular or controversial at all. It's simple Greenhouse Effect which is elementary science.

Denying the Greenhouse Effect is about like trying to deny the Law of Gravity. Humans put out 300 times more CO2 every year than all the volcanoes on the planet combined. CO2 is a GHG and it heats up the atmosphere and oceans which evaporates water. Water vapor amplifies the effects of CO2 and doubles the temperature. We also pump out CH4 which is an even more powerful GHG than CO2.

You really are a moron. It's impossible to get rid of all CO2. CO2 is fine at low levels and fine as long as atmospheric CO2 is kept below 315-320ppm. An atmospheric CO2 composition of 385ppm is too high because it is sufficient to trap enough heat to melt polar caps.

Turn off Alex Jones and Glenn Beck (as well as Al Gore) and listen to scientists instead of loudmouthed blowhards.

By your logic we shouldn't believe in Evolution simply because it's popular (actually it's mainstream) among scientists. As is AGW which is supported by 97% of climatologists and over 90% of scientists in general.

Since I don´t know much about global warming (at least not the advanced, scientific stuff), I want to remind you that this is just personal knowledge/opinion, not big amounts of research, but don´t you think people are exaggerating on the global warming subject? From what I know, it´s happening, but on a much smaller scale than most people make it seem. I´m talking about temperature changes of 0.1C/32.2F per year or even longer.

You seem to know a lot more though, so maybe prove me wrong?

@Re1s1 I think people like Al Gore are exaggerating but I don't think most scientists are. Global warming happens at a relatively slow rate (from the perspective of the day-to-day life of humans) but temperature has been increasing at an accelerated rate in the past 12 years. Much faster than the temperature rise from 1900 to 1970.

The good news is the US and many industrialized nations are cutting emissions but at this point heating will continue for at least several decades more.

@Re1s1 Part of the reason global warming has occurring at a faster rate since the mid 90s compared to the rate from 1900-1970 is because China not puts out more pollution than the US and India is catching up with both. It's almost like having 2 or 3 Americas now polluting.

Another reason is countries like Brazil, Malaysia, India, Indonesia and the Philippines are cutting down forests like crazy, the very things that absorb CO2. Now half of the world's forests have been cut down since 1800.
