Why are people treating this like it's sudden proof that global warming is a sham? The USA has always been a country with a decent amount of snowfall. There'll always be high and low points in the long term trend of snowfall. Anyone who sees the most recent high/low point alone and declares it's proof of a new trend is ignoring what science is about.
3. The press published predictions of an ice age in the 70s, wheras there was no such prediction in scientific journals - who i assume you mean by "they
4. Sea ice (i.e. ice already floating in water) melt wont cause a sea level rise whereas particle expansion due to increased temps and land ice (eg. Antarctica) melt (i.e. not floating) will cause a rise.
@areyoulookinatmepal: I'd say the term climate change has been picked up on because "global warming" is a term that tends to be interpreted as human-caused only. Not only that but it also only focuses on temperature change. What we need to worry about is the effects a change in temperature has on the climate and ultimately us.
we're not responsible for the climate changing. climate change is the code word for global government, and tax the poor deeper into poverty. the middle class is no more
Taxing the poor? That makes no sense. The poor are not the ones producing the majority of emissions. It's common knowledge that it's the high consumption level of the rich that has brought us to this situation, whether you admit climate change is happening or not.
the money to pay for carbon emissions has to come from somewhere, who's going to cover the tab?its the people who were kicked out of their homes by greedy bankers.since there wont be a middle class pretty soon by design, who then?
you didn't answer my question,it has been warmer in earths history, who caused that?if another ice age were to start, would carbon monoxide be causing that also?plants breath Co2 to survive, and put out oxigine, put a stop to deforesting, there would be less Co2
@areyoulookinatmepal You're missing the point. Carbon fixed into organic compounds by, as in your example, the forests is only a temporary store. It's part of the carbon cycle, but the carbon source for fuel (coal, oil etc.) takes a massively long time to produce, wheras rates of extraction are high. Therefore deforestation or not the level of CO2 would increase.

It's simple. The Sun heats the planet and GHGs act as a blanket to trap the heat that would have otherwise eventually escaped into space. Too much GHGs traps too much of the heat and doesn't let enough escape. Thus raising global temperatures which can eventually melt the polar ice caps and cause flooding and extreme weather.
It's called "The Greenhouse Effect". Look up the planet Venus to see an example of a runaway Greenhouse Effect.

it's funny that as soon as we get a record cold winter, the tune's been changed to "global warming can make winters colder as well", despite their earlier "evidence" showing (sorry, apparently PROVING) otherwise.
cold summers have broke records too though and alot of places are still waiting for summer i doubt its to do with global warmining ,wheres the warming? everthing is in decline i get more of a tan from the moon these days
@retardnumberone Correct. Global warming is a general trend (hence why some people now just call it "climate change"). It doesn't mean every day or year will be hot. Even though it's cold in much of the US Australia is on fire right now. The US is cold because we had a decade of strong La Nina.
I really wish layman armchair "experts" would do their research before making uninformed comments. It's like saying gravity doesn't exist because magnets stick to fridges.
97% of climatologists and over 90% of scientists in general support the AGW theory.
Claiming there's a internal fighting of scientists over whether or not it's real is as disingenuous as the claim right-wingers put out claiming there's a shift away from support of Evolution in science. The main problem of AGW is there is no other source but humans that could be causing global warming. The Sun ceased being a significant factor in the 50s.
@areyoulookinatmepal You mean the alleged 30,000 "scientists" that are supposedly suing Al Gore? That's a Neocon myth. First of all it wasn't a lawsuit, it was a petition to sue Al Gore. It was signed 11 YEARS AGO in 1998. To this date nothing has come of it.
Secondly, the vast majority of the names signed were college kids with Bachelor's Degrees, economists, business consultants, amateurs, self-proclaimed "experts" from right-wing thintanks, amateurs and scientists from unrelated fields. Lol.
@A86 i'd love to see how many more there has experts there is added to that way of thinking,if it were up to 50,000 that would mean your 90%would make 4,500,000 scientist there are right now in the world.we'll see when it's re-evaluated,then cry
news (dot) mongabay (dot) com / 2009 / 0122 - climate (dot) html
There are no "30,000 scientists who disagree with global warming". Only a few hundred of those 30,000 who signed the petition were actual scientists. Less than 250 were actual climatologists.
AGW is about as unpopular or "controversial" among scientists as the Theory of Evolution. Meaning not very unpopular or controversial at all. It's simple Greenhouse Effect which is elementary science.
@areyoulookinatmepal All statistics about personal opinion are based on surveys. There has never been a single poll other than jury duty where every person tells what they feel.
In contrast where is your evidence that AGW is "controversial" among scientists or that a significant number of them don't believe in AGW? Your only "evidence" was a petition from 11 years ago where only about 100-something actual climate scientists signed it. Lol.
If you had read the article it was talking about the positions of scientists. Not the general public. All of the people surveyed were SCIENTISTS in the link I sent you.

do you know the phrase,if you tell a lie long enough?97% of cimatologist prefer to use facts, than people who use projectile vomit lies.if you guys had your way all Co2 would be banned. you've been smoking poto to mucho,
Denying the Greenhouse Effect is about like trying to deny the Law of Gravity. Humans put out 300 times more CO2 every year than all the volcanoes on the planet combined. CO2 is a GHG and it heats up the atmosphere and oceans which evaporates water. Water vapor amplifies the effects of CO2 and doubles the temperature. We also pump out CH4 which is an even more powerful GHG than CO2.
This isn't hard, you're simply ignorant of science.
"if you guys had your way all Co2 would be banned"
You really are a moron. It's impossible to get rid of all CO2. CO2 is fine at low levels and fine as long as atmospheric CO2 is kept below 315-320ppm. An atmospheric CO2 composition of 385ppm is too high because it is sufficient to trap enough heat to melt polar caps.
Turn off Alex Jones and Glenn Beck (as well as Al Gore) and listen to scientists instead of loudmouthed blowhards.
By your logic we shouldn't believe in Evolution simply because it's popular (actually it's mainstream) among scientists. As is AGW which is supported by 97% of climatologists and over 90% of scientists in general.
This is why American kids are falling behind kids from other countries in school. We're the only industrialized nation in the world where people are more likely to believe the Bible than science.
Since I don´t know much about global warming (at least not the advanced, scientific stuff), I want to remind you that this is just personal knowledge/opinion, not big amounts of research, but don´t you think people are exaggerating on the global warming subject? From what I know, it´s happening, but on a much smaller scale than most people make it seem. I´m talking about temperature changes of 0.1C/32.2F per year or even longer.
You seem to know a lot more though, so maybe prove me wrong?
@Re1s1 I think people like Al Gore are exaggerating but I don't think most scientists are. Global warming happens at a relatively slow rate (from the perspective of the day-to-day life of humans) but temperature has been increasing at an accelerated rate in the past 12 years. Much faster than the temperature rise from 1900 to 1970.
The good news is the US and many industrialized nations are cutting emissions but at this point heating will continue for at least several decades more.
Yeah, I guess it takes just some loud voices to win the masses. At least the countries are taking first actions. It seems like this is one of the many lessons mankind will learn and hopefully remember in the future.
Cheers for the info and fast response; learning something new every day. ;D
@Re1s1 Part of the reason global warming has occurring at a faster rate since the mid 90s compared to the rate from 1900-1970 is because China not puts out more pollution than the US and India is catching up with both. It's almost like having 2 or 3 Americas now polluting.
Another reason is countries like Brazil, Malaysia, India, Indonesia and the Philippines are cutting down forests like crazy, the very things that absorb CO2. Now half of the world's forests have been cut down since 1800.
