I love how this video shows just how incredibly fast these guys are. With some videos, it doesn't look like the guys are going that fast, even though they are. With this, not only are the guys going really fast, but the video really accentuates the fact that they're going fast. It's fun to watch.
Typing right now- I'm not american. But I have to say: when Mark Lewis Francis saw the VT of the last 50 meters by Maurice Greene, I bet Lewis became at least a little less arrogant.
Still to this day I say they should have had Bernard Williams on that relay team instead of Cobi Miller. Williams has vast more experience on the relay and is a better turn runner by far. And he was in the relay field since he ran the 200. Good handoffs and they easily win this. Of course that's always the story with the US.
Instead of focusing so much on what the USA did wrong, they should show how GB passed the baton so well. Yes okay a replay of USA but its interesting to see how well a good changeover can affect a race so much.
THIS IS AMAZING! The best part is is how the commentators thought the Americans would win no problem. They even focus so much on the team, what about the other contenders?! There was no pick up on the awful change over during the race - watch the British commentary version and they pick up on it straight away.
@ByrneenryB erm...sorry only just seen this reply. Don't you understand the British sense of humour? I was taking the piss out of all the negative anti brit messages.

029 "Hand off successful". LOL!!! Oh, the dangers of having a commentator who has no idea what he is talking about. That "hand off successful" lost them the race.
That was a fantastic anchor by Mo Greene!! His legs are like switch blades cutting the track like butter!!! He is the only American sprinter I respect the most, the rest are nothing but cheats.
@LightningBolt700 yep and dont forget that mo broke his leg almost 2 years before athens 04 and still ran this amazing leg and was very close to to win gold in the 100m final
@puljacina Thats very true bro, I agree!!! The man never gaved up, specially when returning from injuries before the Athens olympics, and yet he still performed amazing :)
@kvocalist how would the USA have "got it" ? by producing three perfect changeovers like the GB team ? Yes, the US had the fastest runners, but they didnt perform as a team - and that is the essence of the 4x100 isnt it?
So, they didnt "get it" because they weren't good enough. Britain weren't lucky, as you put it, they were better at an integral part of the competition - the changeover
@bgarrad69 usa did not have an amazing team at all!! hell maurice was the only one and he damn well nearly won it lol..UK done great iam not knocking em at all, they done everything perfect so they won but if i jus feel that if the last leg was abit longer...us wudda got it.
@kvocalist What are you talking about? They had the 100m Olympic champ and the 200m champ running the first two legs. It was bad handoffs that killed them.
@bgarrad69 dont convince me lol...i cud give ah shit. usa are just known for always damn winning, didnt u see my comment when i said well done GB...wasnt good enuff? LOL fucking hell
Proud to be Biritsh! I don't think we'll have the same success in 2012 in the running events but it's brilliant to see new athletes like Tom Daley coming through in events like Diving. America and China will dominate as per. But I can't wait for the Olympics to be in my city and down the road. It's going to be amazing
@korea902 Yes, but it's the torso of the sprinter that has to cross the line to count as a finish, if you watch closely GBR do finish first, was a damn close race though :)
I remember watching this live on the BBC one race that got me cheering! I thought he was gonna catch Lewis on the line but that made it a great race! It was Marlon Devonishes curve that was just awesome!
America were crap with the changeovers, Britain weren't.
Isn't that half of what the 4x100 relay is about?
If anybody likes, we can change this event to 4x100 mtrs trials runs, with no batons involved. All we do is add up the 4 runners times in each team, and the best wins :)
Poor Briton they have to watch Nigeria, Jamaica, The mighty United States dominate Track and Field at the 2012 London Olympics in there home country. So said. :(

@MKDando He wasn't in any position too, if he extended his leg, it would've hit just before the finish line, watch the slow-mo clip at 3:08 and judge for yourself.
@Chocosizzles So someone who gets their big toe over the line should win ahead of an athlete who has his chest over the line (therefore meaning that he has run fast because his torso is further forward than an athlete who has stuck out their foot)? At the end of the day, there has to be an agreed measurement. The chest is that measure. Britain won.
@fantastischfish Your big toe is part of your body, yes. If you got your leg over, you obviously had to have taken more steps or extended your stride more than the other athlete. I once ran a race where my entire leg, from my thigh down, was clearly over the finish line, but because someone 2 meters behind me fell over the finish line, they got the place ahead of me. I have no qualms about Britain winning, but from Day 1, I've never understood why the chest finishes and not your leg.
@Chocosizzles No you are wrong. Since the foot can be extended further forwards than the torso, the person with their torso over the line must therefore have taken more steps and got their whole body closer to the finish line. It is more difficult to get the torso over the line than any other body part. Otherwise, everyone would cross the line with their arms stretched forwards.
@fantastischfish It doesn't matter any way. Whether it's an arm, the chest, a foot, or your god damn ass, your got YOUR body part, which is YOUR body over the finish line. Race car races aren't determined by the wheel, the windshield or the engine, it's determined by the tip of the car. A race is to see who can get their body to travel the fastest, not just your "chest".
@Chocosizzles For the final time, I'm going to try and explain the laws of science to you. If someone's TORSO is across the line, then they must have run faster than someone whose TOE is over the line. This is because it's easier to just stretch your toe forward that it is to stretch your TORSO forwards. Even though someone's body part might have crossed the line first, it doesn't mean they were the fastest.
@fantastischfish The difficulty of what body part is harder to get over is irrelevant. At the end of the day, a part of your body broke the finish plane first.
usa always the fastest team and usa always the worst handoff team. usa was faster then gb however gb stayed clean on the handoffs and thats what won. great run by mo at the end. when it shows that side camera angle i still get goosebumps.
American comments include - if, but, we, us, usually, oh, baton, best = shut up, we won cause we crossed the line first. Best of British, as you's have learned everything you know from the best, GREAT BRITAIN!! Rule Britannia!
@bjbjbzz yeah i know im just saying at that moment i felt very proud, i have nothing against america i think they have brilliant athlets, and the US have won more . Everyone has the right to proud of whoever they want and i was proud of the Uk like you are proud to be american :)
everyone keeps saying that the US crossed the line first well if i remember the team that crossed the line first wins and funnily enough Britain did, never been prouder to be british at that moment :)
@StuntAngel003 You still live in Britain, the USA is still better than you. Ever see the 4x400 from athens? The USA wins that. Actually the USA won a lot more than Britian. I'm pretty proud to be an american right now.
@bjbjbzz Good for you. Unfortunately, countries don't get handed gold medals based on what they've won in the past. Gold medals are awarded based on who performs best right there and then. In this case, it was Great Britain. So American has won more...well done. It only makes Britain's victory over you more impressive in this instance.
How can the commentator say at the time just 2 seconds before the batton was handed over to Greene by Miller that US was in front? He did not even mention Nigeria or Great Britain runners before the 4th leg.
@muppalla85 Mind my words? No! You were given that reply because you said the American crossed the line first, when CLEARLY he did not. As i said, see an optician immediately.
The third baton pass was the biggest problem for the Us. It was a slow pass and when the he finally got it, he was fixing it in his hand still before he took off.
@08tayvion : yea usa's leg did cross b4 great britians head, but u gotta look at it. They don't count the leg or head they count the chest. Trust me i know I ran track 4 3yrs goin on 4. I was runnin the 200m in Clarksvill, TN me and dis dude wuz neck and neck. His leg crossed b4 mine but my chest wuz in front and thats how I won my race, and if u dnt believe that i can run type in this video: lewis, chism, robertson, and chism 4by1.
The race was won at the last changeover. Coby Miller had in fact got the US back into the race by then, and Nigeria held the lead. Watch from 2:00 and you'll see that both Greene and Aliu look behind for the baton and lose vital ground. Lewis-Francis, meanwhile, looks ahead and that is where he got the advantage. The race was won on merit by the superior British changeovers.
@speedyslime93 nah no way that he only ran 9.2 here!! he wasnt in his prime anymore but still ran an amazing anchor.like carl lewis when he ran his 8.85 split..
i love how the commentators made excuses for the bad hand off.." 3 runners had to share the narrow space, passing a 2once baton..lanes were 48 inches wide" why others can do it, the americans can't??
@Rasperdan ya i know..but there's no denying that the US was clearly the better team. I'm not sure exactly who was in that 100m final. But to have the olympic champion and at least 2 others that could've made that final is crazy. GB was better on that day (or had better luck), but the US was the most talented team.
@CLstarsTV Well you are commenting on the point I made and it still stands ....... GB were better on the day and thats it realy ... regardless of there from on paper .. I am sry my comment was right. ... Lets just leave it at that hay ;)
@CLstarsTV Nothing to do with luck - the GB changeovers were far better. That's through practice and skill, if it was just about who was fastest then you may as well get 4 people to run a 100 and tot up the combined total. But the relay is much more than that. You can have all the natural talent / speed you want but championship are about who handles the pressure and performs.
It doesnt have to do with practice and skill. If you knew anything about them practicing changeovers for the olympics you would know that they dont spend hours and hours everyday perfecting simple handoffs that these pros already know. It was a simple mistake. And even with that simple mistake costing them so much time they still finished that close to GB thats why GB celebrated like that. They knew they were the underdogs and werent supposed to win. USA was better. Just had a worse day
@CLstarsTV I didn't say they spend "hours and hours everyday" but they do practice and the GB changeovers were top notch and that is why they won. As I said, it's championship running and it's about who handles the pressure ie not making mistakes. Yes the USA had faster guys but so what? It is a team performance and the total is bigger than the sum of it's parts - the baton change is as much a part of the race as the speed of the runner so they fully deserved the win.

All of the Brits commenting here seem to have an inferiority complex...
The American announcer is Tom Hammond, the NBC chief athletics announcer since Barcelona 1992. He called this race poorly, but the most of the hundreds of races he's called are quite good.
And the American slant, while irritating if you're not from Ohio (sorry Ohio), is no worse than that of any country's announcers. British coverage is also biased toward the British team, Japanese coverage towards their team, and so on.
@PickledHarrrington Actually, I think you'll find the British coverage to be much more even than the American. Watch the British version if you can find it; the commentary clearly mentions other teams throughout the race, not just Britain.
@Cowtipper4957 this was six years ago. sprinters tend to get faster. same way maurice greene would likely of 'dipped on' donovan bailey or leroy burrell.
america had better sprinters, but they can't cooperate well enough, that's why Mo had no chance to chatch it at the end. britain ran more like "one man", but that's what relay is about. so well deserved:)
Poor NBC viewers. This coverage is so tunnel visioned. There are eight teams in the race, yet the cameras and the commentators don't even consider them until the final exchange and even then only three teams get a mention. There was a race going on and everyone watching NBC missed it! I know the target audience was US and that the US was expected to win, but this is really shoddy. Look up ‘2004 Olympic 4x100m relay fnal men’ for proper coverage.
I mean its evident that if the USA didnt have the little fumble with the baton Maurice wouldve ran right past those guys at Anchor. So I dont understand whats all the argument about loll.
@boshman2000 Don't badmouth baseball in Japan or you will get your ass kicked.

everyone keeps saying that the US crossed the line first well if i remember the team that crossed the line first wins and funnily enough Britain did, never been prouder to be british at that moment :)
StuntAngel003 1 year ago
@StuntAngel003 You still live in Britain, the USA is still better than you. Ever see the 4x400 from athens? The USA wins that. Actually the USA won a lot more than Britian. I'm pretty proud to be an american right now.
bjbjbzz 1 year ago
@bjbjbzz Good for you. Unfortunately, countries don't get handed gold medals based on what they've won in the past. Gold medals are awarded based on who performs best right there and then. In this case, it was Great Britain. So American has won more...well done. It only makes Britain's victory over you more impressive in this instance.

@fantastischfish Countries earn glory for what they've done in the past.

How can the commentator say at the time just 2 seconds before the batton was handed over to Greene by Miller that US was in front? He did not even mention Nigeria or Great Britain runners before the 4th leg.

Greene had crossed the finish line before Mark Lewis Francis

@muppalla85 Mind my words? No! You were given that reply because you said the American crossed the line first, when CLEARLY he did not. As i said, see an optician immediately.
pidgeblev 1 year ago
The third baton pass was the biggest problem for the Us. It was a slow pass and when the he finally got it, he was fixing it in his hand still before he took off.

@puljacina nah it was much slower than that here, I got him at about 9.2 here, as opposed to an 8.9 split in his sydney anchor.
speedyslime93 1 year ago
@speedyslime93 nah no way that he only ran 9.2 here!! he wasnt in his prime anymore but still ran an amazing anchor.like carl lewis when he ran his 8.85 split..

i love how the commentators made excuses for the bad hand off.." 3 runners had to share the narrow space, passing a 2once baton..lanes were 48 inches wide" why others can do it, the americans can't??

@Rasperdan GB was NOT better than America.. America just had the worst luck.
CLstarsTV 8 months ago
@CLstarsTV .. you make your own luck ... GB was better on the day .... I am sry but it is true :/
Rasperdan 8 months ago
@Rasperdan ya i know..but there's no denying that the US was clearly the better team. I'm not sure exactly who was in that 100m final. But to have the olympic champion and at least 2 others that could've made that final is crazy. GB was better on that day (or had better luck), but the US was the most talented team.
CLstarsTV 8 months ago
@CLstarsTV Well you are commenting on the point I made and it still stands ....... GB were better on the day and thats it realy ... regardless of there from on paper .. I am sry my comment was right. ... Lets just leave it at that hay ;)
Rasperdan 8 months ago
@CLstarsTV what ever .. GB was the best on the day and have the medals to prove it. thats all that matters ;)
Rasperdan 4 months ago
@CLstarsTV Nothing to do with luck - the GB changeovers were far better. That's through practice and skill, if it was just about who was fastest then you may as well get 4 people to run a 100 and tot up the combined total. But the relay is much more than that. You can have all the natural talent / speed you want but championship are about who handles the pressure and performs.
MrTimmy303 8 months ago
It doesnt have to do with practice and skill. If you knew anything about them practicing changeovers for the olympics you would know that they dont spend hours and hours everyday perfecting simple handoffs that these pros already know. It was a simple mistake. And even with that simple mistake costing them so much time they still finished that close to GB thats why GB celebrated like that. They knew they were the underdogs and werent supposed to win. USA was better. Just had a worse day
CLstarsTV 8 months ago

PickledHarrrington 1 year ago
@PickledHarrrington erm yeah? Britain FTW mate
munnosable 1 year ago
@PickledHarrrington Actually, I think you'll find the British coverage to be much more even than the American. Watch the British version if you can find it; the commentary clearly mentions other teams throughout the race, not just Britain.

america had better sprinters, but they can't cooperate well enough, that's why Mo had no chance to chatch it at the end. britain ran more like "one man", but that's what relay is about. so well deserved:)

part of the relay is to have good change overs so you cant really say they didnt deserve it..
its like saying someone would have won a 100m race if they had better form. but part of winning the race is having good form
jonolollmao 1 year ago
