hey tonic. i been so lucky as to speak to morten lauridsen personally and he says he loves how his music is so similar. but the way he writes it is so unique. he first chooses a single chord and revolvs his whole song around it. he is truly a musical genius.
@tyetyetye17 what's that supposed to mean? :P on the whole, state schools have inferior programs to private programs? the best collegiate version I've heard of this is from the University of North Texas A Cappella Choir :)
A question. Anyone knows any work of this composer that isn´t so similar to his "Magnum mysterium" (fantastic piece, of course). I always hear the same chords, the same bass movement, even the soprano part is often the same...
I agree, thats one of his faults. While everything he writes is beautiful, it all sounds the same. I haven't come across anything that doesn't sound in some way identical to everything else.
pretty good recording, but lauridsen likes to take this piece faster... and sometimes their sound is a bit choppy and lacks direction in the line, which is really important in his music.
and i agree with someone else above - one of the soprano's vibrato is goin crazy
I had the opportunity to hear BYU university singers sing this. It is amazing. The best version i have ever heard. The abillity of their choir to blend perfectly i amazing and they also give this such a sense of direction. Each part knew when it was important and whent to back off and let another part have the spotlight. Guys in this piece though need to have less bark in their tone and more on the breath singing with more tone. But overall good sound
I don't know about that. I think it's totally up to interpretation. There are some amazing choirs who do vibrato very well. I actually think this rendition is very good. As yuechopin said... "schön!"
I sang alto 2 in this a couple years ago in an honor choir, it was awesome!

Con todos mis respetos,¿Alguien conoce alguna obra de este señor que no parezca otra versión de su "Magnum Mysterium"? (Magnífica obra, por cierto)

overall its pretty good. i noticed the pianist messed up a few times but not too noticeable.
and i didnt really like the balance between the higher and lower ranges.
it seemed to me like the sopranos and tenors were overpowering the lower voices in the group.

Incredible. I did this with my choir at Capital University last year. Still love it.

I wanted to sing this for contest last year but I guess my director didn't believe in the tenors or basses. :(

too much vibrato in the soprano section, lauridsen pieces should always be sung with little or no vibrato. good flowing
