you are right, the playing is fine, the tone is really bad, there is no reverb, delay, just straight distortion. If the tone was better the playing wud sound better

it was probably the amp.. but alot of EMG users are now changing to 18v instead of 9v as the sound is much better. This technique was used by bass players for a very long time
