At 3:03 Ellie says that the Altair 8800 is made by Texas Instruments, I read all 215 comments, ok i had nothing to do! and not one person picked up on this massive Error, My dear Ellie i know you were not even born in 1975 when MITS released the Altair 8800 but that machine is the reason you have a shiny iMac on your desk today, the Altair by MITS not Texas instruments!!! is the seed that spawned
the personal computer industry. is it nitpicking? YES but its important, Keep on Rocketbooming!!!!
I got one of the floppy disks I used for highschool homework, my first USB flash drive, a burned external HDD (which original was inside of my first Laptop) and a SD Card in a pseudo-museum in home.
Its completely financially worthless, but I love it!

Hahaha original ibook from 2000. So buggy, I recently hacked (literal) it with my sword out of frustration I had through my high school years with it. Then trashed it.
Alright, ROCKETBOOM, I have to say this. I don't usually like calling people out for stuff like this, but I feel that as you're a collaborative effort with employees, I can expect from your channel the quality content you usually deliver. This may seem picky, but I was quite put off by the low-res Pollock image you used, especially after your HD footage and high quality images of Demoiselles D'Avignon and Starry Night. I hardly believe there wasn't a larger Pollock on google.
Man.. I had one of the Motorola BRICK phones (not the small but the largest unit they made) circa 1992(!) and even after I got a newer upgrade, kept it for a LONG time.. finally getting rid of it in one of my moves in maybe 2000 or so :-(
rocketboom is soooo awesome, i love you guys and especially andrew for doing it for this long. i remember when amanda was doing this and the show has come a long way.
A lot of old cartridge games have gone down in value thanks to the Wii's Virtual Console. I still have Simcity for the SNES and its value on Ebay plummeted when the Wii came out in 2006.
@thegodofs Probably not as much as Orcarina, but im guessing somewhere around $20 to $50, and up to 150 if its new. Try putting it on ebay, and you may get more than its worth.
What is one person's trash is another one's treasure. I know someone with a collection of vacuum tubes! Talk about old technology. Definitey museum pieces there!
i build computers and look around at salvation army, yard sales, etc for older computers with unique cases. to make them functional i have to gut them and usually build a better computer than you can buy from any name brand company. one thing is windows7 looks kind of crappy on a crt screen
Wow.........Commodore 64.........when I was six I learned to program on one of those. You had to input the code (Basic) to RAM and write to an external cassette tape.....I almost forgot what they looked like. Great vid Ellie!
Ahh yes, funny thing about profits ist they're only bad if others make them. Also Elly seems to be advocating speculation, which is of course the root of all evil.
i got a nes for free from a friend.i just need to get a replacement 72 pin connector to get it to work. its not in very good condition but its okay. it just needs some cleaning
I actually thought I had the Stadium Events game but I have the World Class Track Meet game. Which is the exact same game but just renamed. I'll have to see if I have any rare games.
Nice, I'm a console collector, but I'm not in it for the money I just love old games. However alot of my stuff is getting pretty valuable. Snatcher, Panzer Dragoon Saga, etc. Maybe I'll donate them to a museum upon my death and they'll name a wing after me. Oh and btw - thanks for the great video Ellie
I can't believe you didn't include the Neo-Geo AES, with games such as US Metal Slug worth $2000 - $3000, or EU Kizuna Encounter, a game with only four known copies in existence worldwide, worth between $10,000 - $20,000. Ellie, I love you; but come on, do your research! This system is one of the biggest treasures in the console world, it should never be ignored!
Technological fetishism makes no sense to me... most of these system's value comes from their functionality and that can be easily emulated in a modern computer. The casings are interesting in the overall evolution of industrial design but otherwise pointless.
Also I'm not sure I'd call apple's designs ground breaking. Interesting? Sure... but ground breaking? Far from it.
it depends on how close to the actual implementation you want to get.
If all you're doing is wrapping your source instruction calls around your destination machine's instruction calls (basically an instruction mapping) then yes, I agree, your emulation isn't accurate because of some the particularities of system design (endinaness, floating point format, etc).
Emulation done right it's very accurate. Of course it's also computationally expensive.
Well I find the most noticable discrepancy between native hardware & emulated hardware is with audio output. Oftentimes when I'm playing an emulated game, the sounds are somewhat off when compared to the audio chipset of real thing. It's a minor gripe, I know, but I love old chiptunes & have been collecting long enough to recognize what system a game is being played on, just from hearing the music. It's an important part of the experience for me..
I love playing old NES games but I think part of that is nostalgia. I recently loaded up my old NES and popped in Blaster Master and it sounded the same as on the PC. Mind you my system is really powerful and I'm running an emu (Nestopia) that's known for being precise.
Part of the problem comes down to coding and something like sound and games are different because of the timings requirements (multimedia is harder to emulate).
It comes down to how talented/precise the developers are.
What do you think an old Osbourne 1 would go for? It was the first portable computer (even if it was the size of a suitcase and weighed thirty pounds).
