  • Had to look this up!! It said on facebook that this was the #1 song when I was born Febuary 10th,1977......

  • this song in fact blows goats

  • Julie Covington is good; Sarah Brightman is better.

  • I think her version has the best balance. It's no too sweet and not too strong.

  • It's the best version, because it's the most volnurable one. The voide is the most vulnerable one - indeed, probably of her actor training. When Julie Covington sings the opening line "It won't be easy" she's already beaten Lea Salonga, Elaine Paige, Madonna, Sinead O'Connor and all the others by a mile... and that's just the beginning of it.

  • Unquestionably, the best.. perhaps because of her actor training? I met her some 20 plus years afterwards when I surveyed her house. Meeting a legend I had loved since Rock Follies was incredible.

  • Interesting comments - I thought it was only me who regarded this one as the best! Reminds of when I first heard it at boarding school in the 70s and it's been a personal favourite ever since.

  • .....she's flat the whole first half of the song?

  • So far, Julie Covington's and Lea Salonga's versions are incomparable.

  • i do so aggree fell in love with the song and the lady when i first saw it

  • Best version ever!!!!!

  • This is absolutely the best version of them all. And the first I think?

  • I totally agree, no one surpassed Ms Covington's version & sorry but I too played the 45 over & over again! Even to this day my folks remind me of it & I'm nearly 50 now!!

  • I prefer Elaine Paige

  • @MrPoto00 me too

    Elaine Paige and Sinead O'Connor

although i'm partial to the madonna version as well

  • HAVE TIO AGREE WITH THE MAJORITY; THIS IS THE BEST VERSION EVER, EVEN ELAINE PAIGE'S. I WON'T COMMENT ON THE SINGER WHO STARRED IN THE FILM OF THIS PLAY AS OTHERS HAVE COMMENTED ALREADY.

  • @07476870

  • @07476870 No her name is Julie Covington my mother had the record and she used to play it over and over and drove me nuts! My mom passed away and now I smile when I hear this song!

  • @dsspiritwalker Yes, I apologize for the error. I had long believed her name was Julie, despite the fact I have the original 45. I had to check it to make sure.

  • Do you think Diegos playing this now,lol

  • I have to agree 100% in fact I bought this record when it first came out in the UK charts and 33 yrs this performance has never been equaled. and just as a bit of Info did you know Julie Covington is the only person to get to the NO1 spot in the UK Charts and never appear on Top of The Pop in the UK

At the end of every show they the BBC had to play the No1 single of that week and every week they had to play a video as Julie refused to appear 1977 what a year

  • nobody can match Julie Covington at singing this song

  • For me no-one can touch Julie's version, but I first heard her singing it when I was 15 years old. Whether other versions are "better" or "worse" can only be a matter of personal taste. Madonna's version in the movie version was incredible, as was every other song in that show. I'm just pleased I have had the chance to hear both incredible singers.

When a song is sung as well as the original was, it takes a brave person to cover it, and Madonna did it extremely well.

  • best ever recording

  • This is the best version of the song. The original will always remain forever. The others are copycats!!! Thanks for uploading!

  • the original is always best

  • My dad bought this single in 1976. Still my favourite version and if it wasn't for the Rock Follies the Buzzcocks wouldn't have got their name.

  • this is and always will be the best origbal, bot picked for the musicals, films etc, all because she wore ger heart on her sleave, integrity, honesty and the voice of an angel.

  • Maddonas wasn't the disater folks say it was, she was asked to sing it different rather than have it be a copy of Julie's. Julie is the orginal and therefore can't be covered, Madonna simply did as Webber asked and did it for a more modern Evita.

  • Madonna was crazy to cover this song. Julies is the definative version. Its simply beautiful. There are just some songs you cant cover, you cant improve and this is one of many

  • Madonna is a total disaster,

  • Madonna's version was a total disaster...

  • this is the original

  • I agree with comments here. Julie Covington did the best verson of this song by far. I also loved her when she was in Rock Follies.

  • Julie Covington's version of this song is my favorite. Her voice captured the essence of Evita's pain and vulnerability. The emotion is bared through her phrasing and in almost speechless part of the song. Great rendition. Does anyone have a video of her singing this song?

  • amazing VOICE!!! i love it!

  • No one can touch Julie Covington's version of this classic.

  • @dmcallister1506 I fully agree.

  • @dmcallister1506

Youre right. The best version of all.

  • @dmcallister1506 the first cut is the deepest x

  • i adore this song. thank you very much for putting it on and with better sound quality too! x

  • could you please original rock opera of evita posted? i've been looking for it for almost a year now. it is the best!!!!!!!!!!!
