There is such a thing as a movie being funny bad, but Battlefield Earth is not one of those movies. It's just bad. I don't think it's as bad as most people seem to do, although not by much. It's poorly written and poorly acted, which I hate to say because two very good actors (Barry Pepper and Forest Whitaker) are in it. It is what happens when filmmakers try to say something with their films instead of just trying to tell a good story.
Well, even the "best" in this genre have BIG plot holes. Star Wars... Since the Death Star must be capable of "hyper-space," why so long just to move around a giant planet to take a shot at rebel base? If the idea is to drop a bomb into an exhaust port on the surface of a big sphere, why fly through a long trench a break-neck speed to get there? The Empire only has Vader and two other pilots?
But great movies make us forget (or ignore) those things while watching. Battlefield Earth does not.
This movie is quite good. However, it requires from the audience more knowledge. It deals with many complex concepts and many scenes are actually supported by recent scientific findings. The ending however is typical.
I would recommend it. Nevertheless, if we are unlucky to be found by not peaceful alien life, it would be a goodbye for all of us. No happy endings.
Amazing the aliens didn't notice all the valuable ore in asteroids that are much easier to access. Or, their high tech equipment didn't locate the gold bars at Fort Knox. Of course consider the target audience. Cultists are usually more impressed by vague poorly described concepts. L. Ron Hubbard must have been much amused by his success in convincing his following of a religion based on his science fiction fantasy universe.
Give me Glen or Glenda or Plan 9 from Outerspace anytime. Battlefield Earth has no redeeming qualities at all. I wonder if Revolta was blackmailed into doing this? Now I would pay good money to see film of Revolta's indescretion.

People love to rave on about how bad a movie is. Get a grip, really. Keep an open mind and you'll really like this film. I could make a list of all the goofy parts of the original Indiana Jones but I'd be missing the point. Watch this movie. Understand the characters, the plot, and what everyone's goals and dreams are. All together, the aliens have a valid purpose but as humans we must side with their defense. It really splits your mind but this is what makes it so great.
You should take "review" in doublequotes when describing anything from TGWTG site. Their shtick is funny for the first two times you see it, aaaand then you notice how poor their skills are, they fail to be informative, and they fail HARD at being entertaining. They are even worse than that stupid AVGN character.

I may have to go rent this now for a laugh, but if you're looking for another crappy movie I suggest Street Racer, although i can't say it will be entertaining because it seemed as if the movie didn't have a plot to begin with.
@KakeyoSilverton I saw this movie in the theatre, I was a lot younger then. I really enjoyed the movie. Its a good movie. The plot is awesome with lots of potential if you use your imagination to fill in the gaps its a masterpiece. If you have no imagination and are a literalist then the movie probably sucks for you.

Loony L Ron didn't realise the irony that the prime reason the aliens were able to be defeated was that their home world was controlled by a religious cult, remind you of anything, but the book is really in 2 parts & you only learn this in the second half. The film is grade 1 funny crap, but the book is a good read for Sci Fi fans. Be warned, it's long.
