I've been a fan of Travis all my life, but good god this man is amazing! 19 Years old, how have I not seen this before... All I can say is this is truly amazing.
If you think hunching over your snare for a half hour while your band goes to sleep is jamming out better than Travis Barker, I say put down the crack pipe. This kind of drumming may have went over back in the day, say 1973 or whatever, but things evolve. Get used to it. If you want to sit around Vegas, smoking cheap cigars, drinking Bourbon, rehashing the greasy $4.99 all-you-can-eat gristle steaks at the Sands in Vegas as Buddy Rich indulges himself in snare rudiments, go for it. Barker!
Haha, only just started watching Buddy Rich videos, and already noticed there is a trend of people bringing up the shirtless tattooed percussionist from Blink... honestly, they are both great. Buddy is a legend, and Travis will probably end up being remembered as one of the greats too... so why all the arguing? You'll probably find that Travis looks up to Buddy anyway

ive watched buddy's videos hundreds of times and still cant believe his left hand.Did his brain think he had two right hands or what?Damn, his thumb and fingers freak me out
To those people who think Bonham, Moon, Baker, Peart etc are the best drummers, im sorry but they are not. They were fine drummers, yes, but are not in the same league as true great masters such as Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Loiue Bellson, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Joe Morello etc. They themselves would tell you that.
Even though I'm a rock musician, I'll be the first one to admit that rock drummers don't have shit on jazz drummers. Guys like Buddy Rich, Art Blakey, Louie Bellson, Max Roach, and Elvin Jones - to name a few - are FAR BETTER drummers than guys like John Bonham, Neil Peart, and Keith Moon. Bonham may be my favorite drummer, but I'm a musician who is smart enough to realize that favorite does not always equal best. Unfortunately too many people are not capable of differentiating between the two.
@JandBMan312 I DO know the difference on both points, and agree with you 100%.
A lot of GREAT drummers today and yesterday, but Buddy Rich was one of a kind as he could do it ALL, and did it BEST! Without a doubt THE drumming legend of all time.
Idk if this has been said before or if you can even compare two (don't see why not both are drummers.) but in my opinion Buddy Rich is not the best drummer. Not even Number 2. In my opinion Number 1 is John Bonham and Number 2 is Ginger Baker. My number3 would probably be Keith Moon because he was the first drummer to actually trash his set.

@fudgecatnipples read your comment fine thanks, dont think booting drum kits around a stage means you are a better drummer, anyway krupa should be slightly ahead of bonham
There's no one to compare buddy to! He was the ultimate double stroke drummer if you can dig it? Billy Cobham played straight strokes and he was the shit at that particular think!! There are so many cats that can really play,so steal what you can of buddy's thing and do your own shit!!
My God! How in the hell does anyone become that good at something. Simply awesome! NO ONE WAS EVER BETTER-PERIOD! Just look at this video and marvel at sheer talent.
all i see is speed and technical prowess, can somebody link me to a video where he actually displays some drumming that just sounds good, with some subtlety and rhythm rather than just speed
@beatlesguyEM if you don't hear the rhythm, it's because you're just not listening to it right. Buddy has probably more natural groove in his left ass cheek than most people attain in an entire lifetime.
You would think someone who made his living beating things with a stick could've worked out all his aggressions. Amazin' as BR was as a drummer, he was a super-asshole (just listen to the secret recordings of his tour bus tirades).
it seems as though the drums and buddy just communicate somehow, i dont know how he does it, he just knows how to let the sticks do what is physically natural, therefore interacting with the instrument the way it is supposed to be interacted with. The other insane part was that he was born that way :)
@moosemcfly Even though there is no point in deciding which musician is "better" than another, if you seriously think Travis Barker or Dave Grohl is a more skilled drummer than Buddy Rich than it just proves that you know nothing at all about drumming.
Anyone can beat the drums today.....But nobody can PLAY the drums Like Buddy could. Lets see someone "BUDDY RICH" the drums. Ain't gonna happen PERIOD!
@maccermacnab Is that best you got? The man is pouring his entire being into pulling off something that was out of reach for 99.9% of the drumming world. Not to be rude, but you'd look like you had a incurable psychological dysfunction from 0-4:00 and beyond.
To be honest I've followed Blink 182 for years and Travis barker is a brilliant drummer but he is only a pupil to the teacher that is buddy. Buddy brilliant
In fact, if we're going to compare Travis (who is alive) to Buddy (who is dead) then we might want to include John Bonham (who is dead) who makes Travis look like a beginner as well. Yeah... there are too many drummers WAY better than that Travis guy to even put him in the top ... Hmmmm... ten even.
Now now, leave them alone. We use the fact that some people mention Travis Barker and Buddy Rich in the same breath to distinguish them from people who aren't idiotic 14 year olds.
I'm 53 years old. I've seen buddy perform several times and have watched this particular solo. I played the drums with a band in my younger days and was a mediocre drummer who could keep a beat and throw out a solo here and there. I just watched several Travis Barker vids and cna truly say that he didn't do anything I couldn't do. Good but totally un-notable. This solo . . . i couldn't touch this in my wildest dreams. Sorry. not even worth comparing.
@ahrims221 Dude you came too late to the party. We've all been through that "Travis Barker kicks Buddy's ass" stuff on here and we're all too tired to reply to it anymore.
"No one is born with talent?" I think Mozart, Beethoven, and Buddy Rich had a little. Buddy Rich was voted #1 in the Downbeat readers' poll with monotonous regularity until he was finally eclipsed by Billy Cobham in 1973. Find One Word by Mahavishnu and you will see why. "There were giants on the earth in those days." I last saw Buddy at the Newport Jazz festival. He then had double bass drums and many tom toms and played so beautifully - with real groove, not just speed - that I wept openly.
@i3rucei3ruce. Ummmmm. Ur wrong about buddy. He was in a vaudeville how playing drums at 18 months old known as "traps the boy wonder" Tell me when in 18 months he was able to do all that practicing. He didn't he was a prodigy.
travis barker can suck my left nut!

I like to listen to Buddy Rich and he's undoubtedly great. Just to give some perspective on the notion of being "the best" in drumming.
There's really isn't such a thing. Just three quick videos you'll understand what I mean.
1) Brian Blade playing "Jazz Crimes" with Joshua Redman watch?v=1ICJUFOJa2g
2) Heracio Hernandez afro-cuban watch?v=kd349Df1Ows
3) Stanton moore New Orleans watch?v=fWpZ3-4fQbc
It's "the best drumming" but they can't play each other's groove although they'll love the music

@opticalpig

Any drumming machine would break down trying to outplay Buddy. Buddy could part the Red Sea with his solos.

Someone needs to make a CGI ending where the drums explode, and the cymbals melt into magma.

Travis barker cant even play ,he sounds like shit and even if he knows technique, that does not make him good
because of somebody beating the crap out of the drum kit, that's not playing, its you don't practice sounding good for no reason
you can go on about my opinion all you want but lets face it i have seen him playing badly on countless videos
if you don't want to believe what i have as a musician, then you better have a damn good winning argument
