I like to listen to Buddy Rich and he's undoubtedly great. Just to give some perspective on the notion of being "the best" in drumming.

There's really isn't such a thing. Just three quick videos you'll understand what I mean.

This kind of drumming may have went over back in the day, say 1973 or whatever, but things evolve. Get used to it. Even though I'm a rock musician, I'll be the first one to admit that rock drummers don't have shit on jazz drummers. Guys like Buddy Rich, Art Blakey, Louie Bellson, Max Roach, and Elvin Jones - to name a few - are FAR BETTER drummers than guys like John Bonham, Neil Peart, and Keith Moon. Bonham may be my favorite drummer, but I'm a musician who is smart enough to realize that favorite does not always equal best. Unfortunately too many people are not capable of differentiating between the two.

Idk if this has been said before or if you can even compare two (don't see why not both are drummers.) but in my opinion Buddy Rich is not the best drummer. Not even Number 2. In my opinion Number 1 is John Bonham and Number 2 is Ginger Baker. My number3 would probably be Keith Moon because he was the first drummer to actually trash his set.

I'm 53 years old. I've seen buddy perform several times and have watched this particular solo. I played the drums with a band in my younger days and was a mediocre drummer who could keep a beat and throw out a solo here and there. I just watched several Travis Barker vids and cna truly say that he didn't do anything I couldn't do. Good but totally un-notable. This solo . . . i couldn't touch this in my wildest dreams. Sorry. not even worth comparing.

He then had double bass drums and many tom toms and played so beautifully - with real groove, not just speed - that I wept openly.
