Before Filipinos are licensed to practice, they had to pass a competency exam,a medical board exam, go thru internship, recidency training in US, some,for a total of 7 to 8 years. Then take 2 more med exams for specialty and subspecialty. So, they take more exams than american graduates do, before they're licensed in the US.,just to make things clear.
--hope next time they don't go along and make a careless script again, because even though i love this show, that was just wrong.

That "joke" doesn't make sense because I've never heard of a stereotype that Filipino doctors are bad doctors.
Also, people in the USA hire lots Filipino doctors, pharmacists, and nurses that were educated in the Philippines. What were the writers thinking when they wrote this?

Before Filipinos are licensed to practice, they had to pass a competency exam,a medical board exam, go thru internship, recidency training in US, some,for a total of 7 to 8 years. Then take 2 more med exams for specialty and subspecialty. So, they take more exams than american graduates do, before they're licensed in the US.,just to make things clear.
--hope next time they don't go along and make a careless script again, because even though i love this show, that was just wrong.

Also, I think the main issue in this scene was that Susan doubted the doctor had a real diploma. The Phillipines is reknown for crime involving the dishing out of fake diplomas, passports, designer clothing etc.
But even if this wasn't the case, it is still understandable somebody wouldn't particularly trust a doctor with a diploma from an underdeveloped country with high crime rates and such.

How was this racist? Yes it might be a bit insensitive and stereotypical, but it's only because many people view the Philippines COUNTRY (not the race) as poor and underdeveloped (currently a NIC), with high poverty and illiteracy rates. Therefore you would assume that the education isn't particularly good due to a lack of funding, and therefore a diploma from an institution there would not be as prestigious as one from Harvard, Yale etc.

It is regular occurence and always in the news in the Phillipines about patients dying due to prescription of wrong meds,a lot of patients die becoz they don't have money for downpayment even in emergency cases, there are also plenty of cases that surgeons here leave scisors,needles,sutures,even a wristwatch! in a patients stomach after the operation!.patients have to be operated again a few weeks months to get those things accidentally left in their stomach.

i'm a filipino-canadian. i am not surprised about the racisit comment neither am i surprised about the vast filipino reaction. i tell you the truth when i say. Filipinos have little or no identity in the US. the majority of mainstream americans view filipinos as a race of insignificant people. this is a fact.

Obviously, the scriptwriter and Teri Hatcher have no idea of how EDUCATED filipinos are, third world country as it seems...but we are rich when it comes to education. I'm a fil-am doctor here and I always prove them wrong, I'm always at my best when it comes to my patients. We filipino MD's are one of the best in the world! If you have lived in Philippines you understand the joke r slur more. When i go to sleep ill pray my children dont get sick in the Philippines, i have seen the hospitals and doctors and number of people that die. most time they prefer Quack doctor than real one.
