Ummm their only shooting targets that are coming out of the trap house in a straight line, no hard left or right targets. you would have to be blind not to hit them.
Their stance trains nothing for field shooting, as if you'd stand in the swamp all day long with your gun up wait for a bird to fly into your shooting zone, your arm would fall off lol. We were trained to bring your gun up once the target was sited..
@tfac79 There are disciplines that are shot with a low gun (Olympic skeet, sporting clays etc.). In trapshooting, both in ATA as well as in bunker (the one you see at the Olympics) the gun is pre-mounted. Shooting "in the swamp" is done using a different kind of gun, shells and... technique. Hope this helps :)
These boys look so calm. It's so zen. Look at the follow through on each shot. Are they following the broken pieces to the ground, or are they following the arc of the flight that the target would have taken?
@Nader620 Thanks for watching our videos. They are indeed following a broken piece, a great way to learn to stay into the gun - helps with consolidating a good form and prepares for doubles and why not, olympic trap (two shots per target are allowed). Thanks for watching, consider subscribing, more videos to come.
@DSToNe19and83 Find a nice lefty gun and start shooting with the left. After a couple of rounds you will forget about the dillema. Then check your left eye dominance percentage and visit a good gun doc to take your measurements and fix your gun.
Never too late to start, I'm soon 40 and plan to take up skeet and later trap this autumn here in Copenhagen, Denmark. And I get inspiration from watching videos such as this one so thanks;-)
@robactor Congratulations on picking up this amazing sport. If in Copenhagen, you will probably start in Olympic skeet and Olympic trap (birds are faster, intl. skeet is low gun to name a couple of differences)... You will have lots of fun! Go to learntrapshooting dot ca and click on Corporate Events to watch some amazing Olympic Trapshooting.
@learntrapshooting Cheers for that;-) I'm going for my first lesson next week on Saturday and can't wait. The guy I'm going with has reserved 80 clay pigeons for me, so I expect a sore shoulder;-) The only thing that scares me is that I think I might get a serious addiction to this sport;-) Will be in touch. R.
@robactor Have fun!! Yes, you will get addicted... I bet... Don't shoot too much the first time... If you start feeling your shoulder (as in tender not as in hurting!!) stop and take a week long break. Enjoy!
3. When you are aiming, it may sound unorthodox or even a little bit stupid, but if you can manage, point/focus your gun so the sight you are looking at is about a foot above the box. If you are at the far left, put it above the back left corner of the box, the not extreme left goes above the front left corner, middle above the middle, and so on an so forth. 4. If you are missing, change your stance, stance is VERY important. and last but not least, Have fun, its just a game. Stay safe!
I am a young trap shooter, but I shoot often. I am not a pro and I am not trying to impose anything on any of you reading this but I have learned several techniques that have helped me shatter my targets. 1. Don't rush, I usually take a deep breath and keep my hands steady. 2 If you are standing at the extremes, you MAY have to change your footing. If you are a right handed shooter, open your stance at the FAR right, if you are a left handed shooter, open your stance at the far left
I saw your vid, you broke the targets left and right. How do you aim? I am about to give up now since i did not make any progress at all. Before giving it up, i would like to ask someone out there on how to aim before shooting. Help
Thanks for your tip. I tried like you mentioned; not to aim at the target, but point at it and keep my eyes on it. I was so happy that i broke 11 targets out of 25 last Saturday.Oh man, I was about to give up, but you came to my rescue. Thanks! My goal now is to break 20 out of 25 (may be i am dreaming, but i am not going to give up now). Thanks for your valuable tip.
Gun fit is most important - agreed. As for why one gun costs more than the other and why it makes sense to spend more, see my reply to vaderjones20 above. When you shoot 6000 rounds registered targets a year (felt recoil btw is cummulative), considering one is only allowed 2 failure to fire per sub-event, quality matters.
Why spend so much money on guns, I use a mosberg 500, Remington 58, and an skb 505. The only gun that costs over a grand is the skb. If it fits you, it should work well.
you can get a condor for about 600, it's the same thing. I'd rather use my 870 pump for competition though. for free hand i use a remington 1100 semi-auto. depends if you wanna spend thousands of dollars for a trap gun, or just use an 870 and still beat people. it's up to you i guess.
It depends on a lot of factors: how much you shoot, how often, what the short and long term goals are etc. A field gun that fits, will break targets just the same but try to put 30k rounds a year through it and see if it lasts the season (assuming you survive the recoil). The high rib, long forcing cones, balance, lack of muzzle jump or vibration - all contribute and make a difference when going for that 100 or 200 straight to win the compt.
well, i don't shoot trap everyday, sometimes not even once a week. So for me my 870 works well, i put about 200 rounds per trip through it, then thoroughly clean it. It's got a 28" inch barrel like most trap guns. the recoil i can handle because it has a pretty thick recoil pad.
That was their graduation match to level 2 so I'd rather have them focus on the pre/post shot routine as opposed to trying to throw empties into the bin. There is time to pick up shells when the round is over.

@arnoldcustom The angles are not the best. Look carefully at 3:36 for example and you'll see the 'smoke'. Thanks for watching!

Excellent! It looks like your 870 is adequate for the job and there is no need to upgrade. Enjoy the sport! Thanks for your comments.
