This is an excellent video, and I thank you for it! We need more educational bird videos. I was shocked that you said 80 to 91% of the cockatoos kill themselves, but I did not understand what you said is the reason.

what you recommend as a first bird, if not a cockatoo? i definetly want to eventually have a cockatoo, what i love about them is not only are they beautiful and loving birds, but they can grow old with you so you won't lose them early in life and get sad..
Birds live a very long time. What I would recomend if you are set on having a Cockatoo is to go to a rescue in your area and start volunteering at one with a cockatoo.
I mean for about 3 - 5 months no less than once a week for 2+ hours with the Cockatoo you are going to adopt. In addition take pictures of where you have space to keep your bird when it comes home, do a cost chart you can afford on the bird you adopt. If its less than $100 a month? You may want to reconsider.
What about if you want to help with these cockatoo/bird rescues? Because I really love birds, especially cockatoos and I'd really love to get a job where I can help nurse/take care of them.
I would contact a rescue in your area via Google search and make an appointment to visit. Let them know you are interested in being a pet sitter on location or volunteer for a bit.
No one should expect to take a bird home as a foster or adoption without first getting to know the rescue or bird in person.
Some great information and the stalking analogy was right on the money! I am owned by 3 rescued parrots - 2 of them cockatoos. They are my best friends but in my heart I wish they were free as they were meant to be.

I have been taking care of my daughters 2 cockatiels since she left on Aug 1, 2007 and boy were they looking for her after she left. June her 10 1/2 yr old cockatiel is just beginning to bond with me. I hope it doesn't confuse him when she comes back in a few months. Her youngest LOVES everyone who will let him, he is 1 1/2 yrs old.

I would never have a pet cockatoo or any large exotic bird. I love them to pieces, but it's too intense of a commitment. My wish is that others will not have cockatoos as companions unless they truly know what they are getting into. Great video!

Check list...
Cockatoos need more than a cage...
Lots of play space, Swings, & revolving toys.
Foraging toys that require hours of thinking and puzzles are a MUST!
Find a rescue that's an ADULT = 5+ years. Going through puberty is an art all of its own. Normally unsuccessfully.
Get toys at thrift cheap that they can destroy. Inspect stuffed animals for no beads inside or removable eyes etc. + washable.
Feed Quality food only + reserve 2Hrs a day for the next 60 years.
now your good to go!

I have 6 cockatoos and all but one is rescued.
I never knew that large percentage of birds destroy themselves in the 1st ten years.
may I ask where that information came from?

I'm on my third owner, but I think this guy's gonna keep me. I escaped from my first human because he didn't keep my wings trimmed.
People should learn about all aspects of pets before getting one.
