I feel like this is the 100% dog for me! My only problem is that I live in a very hot country... Do tollers do ok in hot country? He/she would have plenty of air condition and shelter but I was just wondering...
@PureSkilled Thanks for the nice comments. We really enjoy Chester. As for having a Toller in the heat, ours really likes cold weather. If you see my other video with Chester, you'll see him swimming which he does lots in the summer to stay cool. He does not like walking much in the heat of mid day as well. You might contact the NSDTR Club to speak with Toller owners in your area.

@natew00 I know a breeder with a pup left if you are still looking... try gaberlunzie gundogs. Good luck! (PS im english i got mine from her! She's GREAT!)
@PureSkilled i had the exact same problem as you. the toller was my perfect dog as well. but not only are they hard to find in England, they're also very expensive. however, golden retrievers are very similar apart from they grow a couple of inches larger and are a bit more crazy! We have found that our golden (also called chester!) is easy to train, eager to please and loves everyone. Great for first time owners. But if you do find a toller the are great dogs as well.
Where Did You Get Your Dog?? Ive Been Wanting A Purbreed Of A Tolling Retriever But I Cant find Any Humane Societies or Shelters That Have Any In My Area...
Most good breeders require puppy buyers to give their breeder the first right of taking the dog if they feel they can no longer deal with it.
In other words: You're unlikely to find one in a shelter. If it does show up there, then the Toller Rescue club is usually contacted first, and they find a home for it. So you might want to look that organization up.
I would highly recommend dealing with a replicable breeder when looking for a Toller.
@folkard84 Thank you. If you liked this movie, you might enjoy my other Toller video titled "Top Ten Reasons Not to Get a Toller - The Movie (with Chester)" also posted on YouTube.
My friend has a toller that licks everything. He has a little underbite too. We named him peanut budder. (yes we spelled it with D's). My got that dog will not stop licking things. He's a smart one too. He can get out of his kennel in every way possible.
I myself have a tolling retriever, and he is the BEST dog EVER!!! I say and I'm speaking for everyone, If ur looking for a good family dog than this is the way to go!!!!!!!!
I loved this video. I had never heard of this breed until I went to see my doctor this morning. While I was waiting to go in I saw someone carrying this absolutely adorable puppy to the back door for a washroom trip. It belongs to my doctor and was only 12 weeks. IYour dog looks exactly like my doctor's and their faces are amazing with those beautiful soulfull eyes. Lucky you to have this amazing dog.
@dumbassjoker Our Toller fits in great with our family, and he has never been trained to hunt. However, he gets at least 1 hr running in the woods every day, and some kind of training is a must. If you don't give them a job, they will find one to do without you. To see Chester's daily routine, look at my other video titled "Top Ten Reasons Not to Get a Toller"
@nomderd Thanks so much. I uploaded a new video this weekend titled, "Top Ten Reasons Not to Get a Toller - The Movie". Let me know if you enjoy that one too.
He does not have have a problem with allergies, however he has a very thick double coat of fur, so you might have a problem. Actually, Chester has started sleeping on our pillows at night while we try to sleep...yes, it is very sweet.
Beautiful. My Toby passed away yesterday morning. I'm a little embarrassed to say that I thought he was a Golden Retriever mix for 14 years. I was checking where to get a blood test to determine, but then I came across the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever and Chester in the process. I'm certain that's what Toby is now. Loved the video.
Thank you for sharing your story with us. Lots of people see a Toller and wonder if they are a mix. We affectionately refer to Chester as our "Mutt". I hope to create a new Chester video in the next few months.
Nate, if you've joined one of the Facebook groups for Tollers, let me know. I'm sensing yours has had the same effect on you. Like changed you in a major way?
Well, we certainly love ours. He is a wonderful companion, and gives us a million reasons a day why we are glad we got him. To your question, he is not like a Golden or a Lab. He will cuddle on his terms and in his own way. Suggest you google the article titled, "Top Ten Reasons NOT to Get a Toller". Knowing that all these are true, we would certainly do it all again.
They are a supreme companion! I've had my duck toller for about 9 years now and he's a wonderful dog! He loves kids, he loves my cats and our other dog, and he loves meeting new people. But the best bit is how he puts on a smile and runs to me when I come home. You won't regret having one of these wonderful dogs!
Mine came from the Little River breeders in the Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia. Slight problems with their breeding I think, as my duck toller had a few minor health problems as a puppy.
But otherwise he's in good health and recently won a battle with cancer (a huge relief for me).
Mine was an AWESOME cuddler! SO love-y. Research the breed and read the characteristics. Spot on usually. Socialize them early. They have to warm up to strangers, but they do.
we have a dog and people were always think he's this breed when actually he's a mixer of a border collie and a labrador. HE's so cute. HE looks exactly like a tolier except he has black eyeliner.
This video is great! Thank you so much for sharing. I have a Toller that we adopted and later found out was a Toller and I missed out on all of his puppy days, so it was wonderful to see your video!!!!
I hope you get your Toller soon! Fantastic little dogs. Our "Maggie" is 7 years old now and still gets about 45 min- hour of vigorous exercise a day. I play A LOT of fetch w/her every day and take her hiking 2-3 week. My husband is a runner, so he takes her with him. They are sporting dogs which are usually more active as a rule. If you can commit to at least 45 min. of vigorous exercise a day you'll be fine. :)
I have always loved tollers, even before I realized they were an actual breed. I would always tell my mum, "When I grow up I want a golden retriever! But it has to be dark in colour, and have a white stripe on its face and paws and chest". :)
Can any toller owners give me an idea as to how much exercise I'm looking at, if I get one? What's your daily fitness schedule like with your dog?
I must agree with all the comments. Chester is just over two years now, and he has matured into being a wonderful family member. I think the rule of 1 hour a day of vigorous exercise is right on. Chester gets his run in the woods with my wife every morning. In the summer, we've taken him for afternoon swims often as well. Without these, he will find a way to uncoil his spring while in the house. It is fun to see, but not if you can't stop what you're doing at that moment.
HaHa. I wonder what that test would say about me? We've got 2 Tollers and a Foxhound!! :) They're fantastic little dogs. BUT- you have to make sure u give them A LOT of exercise. If u don't, they'll take it out on everything u own! :) Hope u can get your doggie real soon!
I was reading a book called Why We Love the Dogs we do by Stanley Coren it is really interesting it is all about how certain dog breeds match certain personalitys and has a test to find out the dogs that are right for u
The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is one of the dogs that suits my personality the best and so when i get my own place I am going to get one yay and they happen to come from Canada my fave place on earth (apart from Aus because I live in Aus)
i have a brittany and was thinking about getting another dog. do you think a toller would get along well with one? they look as though they have similar temperments and energy levels, size too.?
I have a Toller also. All my dogs have been wonderful, but Little Ricky is special. Smart, loving and full of fun. Hope to always have a Toller in my life.
what do u expect, its a dog. If you want a dog your going to have to pick from a very small list, because lots of dogs are high energy. Try two Irish wolfhounds, and then you'll know what high energy stands for (and to go along with it there 34 inches tall at their shoulder.)
Congrats on getting a Toller. We feel so lucky to have this boy. Let me know if you have any questions on the breed, and I can share our experience. There is so much goodness in these guys. Thanks also for the comment.
I had a Lab/Shepherd mix and she died a couple weeks ago. Im 16 and she has been my best friend all my life. I want a new dog and I was looking at Tollers because they're so precious.
Do they make good pets??? and are they really active and hyper?? i need a dog like that =]]
Thanks for the nice comment. I am sorry to hear about your dog, and hope you have a new dog soon.
Tollers are amazing, and Chester has been a wonderful member of our family. We get him out running every day, and try to train with him a little each day as well. I think that this is an amazing breed of dog, but not for everyone. If possible, it would be good to talk to a local family who owns one, and see how they have worked with their dog
