i think the only "problem" with reason is that it doesn't have mic input so you can modulate the voice and record it in real time... that would be awesome! just a thought :D
Actually, you can (well sort of). With some drivers. you can do that: watch?v=EzUNMqZJYlM&feature=related (in the video I don't understand what he's saying, but it shows that you can)
One way that I kinda ghetto-rigged it before I had Logic Pro;
1) Get Audacity, it's a free audio editor that you can record into.
2) record a vocal track and then export it as a .wav or .aiff
3) Put that into a Redrum Drum Computer channel or NN-XT with the release all the way up and then you can trigger your vocal track right when it's supposed to come in and modulate it like any other instrument.
4) You can also wait to do the modulation and layer it via mod tracks in the arrange window.
hi im new trying to make music with thor...i was wondering..when i choose a "run" patch and i play it ...how do i record it ? i mean how can i use it as a recorded loop?
Reason 4 is a sick program, for all ppl asking about thor if it can create powerful sounds, course it can it has 3 filters, 3 diff osc, 2 lfo and loads more there endless amounts of sounds that can be moulded and shaped, and finally the ppl that say reason isnt capable of producin good basses r the ones that never took enough time to perfect them ;p
Also all beginners who are being put off getting reason by more experienced users because of the lack of audio, don't be - samplers will do for the minute. Its a lot easier to learn than pro DAWs like Logic and Protools, and it even teaches you about analogue kit wiring.
Been without Reason for almost two years now... and I miss it so much I'm probably going to buy it in the new year. I have the new Logic Studio, but the signal flow in all of the synths is confusing. Yeh, you can prob get better sounds out of them but at least in Reason with a bit of practice you know what every pot and fader is doing and where they are in the signal chain when you're synthesizing new sounds.
I was SUPPOSED to get reason today, but i didnt. Cause im short on cash. Im using the FL demo.... And it sux. Well, Kinda. And its simple. I WANT REASON SOOOOOOO F*KIN BADLY!!!
I love Reason 4 !! I sold it when I was needing some quick cash which was a HUGE mistake but I am repurchasing it today : ) as well as a keyboard. I already have a full 88 weighted keyboard but it's a pain to drag across my room to the computer so I am buying the SAME keyboard he is using here, the Korg Kontrol 49. WOOHOO!!
I'd go with reason 4 anyday over fl, i just love the concept of a hardware emulator with endless amounts of hardware.. Thor is worth the asking price alone. u should get both though, i like the arpegiators on fl, but reason 4 has a new arp' unit anyway. i just got 4 last night, cant wait to get home from work anhave a good play with thor. I don't like what they have done with the sequencer and note editor tho, anyone know if i can turn that off so is like reason 3?
you want both!! reason is for making tunes and im pretty sure Fruit loops is like propellerhead recycle for making loops and remixing existing tunes. but basically you wanna buy ableton live!! Everyone I speak to say its the daddy!! im saving :D
@djkrankhoff This is nonsense, sorry. There's absolutely nothing Reason can do that can't be done in FL. There are hundreds of things you can do in FL that you cannot do in Reason.
Reason is a great synth rack, but in terms of using it as a primary DAW. It's basically a beginner's package and is by far the easiest to learn and use.
the sequencing in fl rock though but reason's soundquality is much much better.
Fruityloops tends to muddy up everything (you can get high cris quality in fl yes, but it is much harder to get while you get it 'instantly' in reason).
So i use fl for sequencing and reason for soundcreation/engeneering/mastering.
I'm planning on buying Reason 4 premium pack but i have a very Old computer. So I've decided to buy a new computer (probably an apple) thing is will a laptop be capable of running reason or will I need a desk top computer. Also do i need additional programs to run Reason or does it run on it's own. A response would be appreciated
the laptops work fine...i posted a video of the first song i mad on my apple which is 3 years old. It was the first of the Intel Cores....so you should be set....a new mac book will run reason with ease....and actually according to PC World the computer that actually ran Windows Vista the fastest...was the Mac Book Pro....Mac puts out powerful machines
YOu know what I am sick of hearing all these Reason Apologists out there, Everyone knows the sounds that come with reason sucks ass, I've been doing my research and I find FL studio sony acid pro and cubase sounds a whole lot better than reason. I've been using reason but I'm not at all impressed with it.
Yes Reason 4.0 And Ableton Live 7 Is Tha Shit.....I Love It.......I Think I Seen Tha Man In Tha Reason Video With D.J. Toomp Interviewing Him...But Reason 4.0......Reason 4 is a great product if u don't got it......u better go get it.....
i love reason, ive come to learn it more and more over the years, my main problem with it is the initial sound engine it has in it, cubase is industry standard and the engine in that is top class...reason lacks a good output, mainly muffled so you have to compensate for that by making a rack to suit - which i have done. they need to sort the sound engine out in 5 and MAYBE (despite the dispute) make it possible to simply rewire straight to a VST. you can never have enough sounds
Judging by your negative comments on almost every reason 4 video,it seems you have a deeper issue. Why dont you gather your best patches from wherever you think and I will post mine from Reason 4...then we could have a "SOUND OFF".....forget The Music....lets just brag about who has the best presets....then the winner can get to say....NAA NA NA NAA NAAAA!!(SARCASM).joking aside.your missing the point.its not the presets which Thor has to offer.its its capabilities as a synth. Its immense.
Reason is amazing and you don't need any VST's? Well I first started out with Reason a long time ago and followed it a little since, in all honesty, it's more of a beginner tool. I now have a home studio and Reason just couldn't cut it at all against my vst's, let alone my hardware synths, better software synths.
Get a life people.
Reason's sound engine has always sounded weak and Thor is no different, it's a weak synth, it's certainly not amazing. It's 'usable'.
Are you kidding me? Maybe you just arent good enough with reason, its excellent!
But if you need all your fancy shmancy vst's to make music i feel sorry for you...
reason is just as good as anything, i actually went BACK to reason when reason 4 came out... its powerfull and you can run ten times more "shit" then with your VST's...
i guess you are one of those types who just sits there and browse trough your patches all the time :p hahaha no im not gonna say anymore :p
Wooh! Perhaps you just aren't good enough with using vst's. ;)
After all, what do I know? Since all I do is create music professionally & all my other contacts and colleagues who produce cinematic music all use vst's, real instruments etc as well, not 1 uses reason, wonder why that is?
Anyway, I didn't say Reason was pants, it's just not 'great', the idea behind Reason as an all in 1 package is superb. I'm just not keen on Reason's sound engine, it is weak, particularly with orchestral stuff.
''But if you need all your fancy shmancy vst's to make music i feel sorry for you...'' thats a pretty silly hypocritical thing to say. vsts are just applications that are used within a production program, like instruments and effects. technically reason is a vst based program as it is full of synths and effects that you are using. reason is pretty restrictive that it only allows its own 'vsts'. this makes it very inferior, the one unique thing about reason is the malstrom synth.
ive heard people make some of the most powerful basslines ive heard using reason. that malstrom synth is very cool. thats about the only good thing i can think about reason. i think the sound some guy i know has been making some epic drum and bass, which usually isnt my preference, but it was the incredible overdriven bass that made me love it. have tried to achieve a similar sound with many other vsts+programs but to no avail. malstrom seems to be unique, but reason is very restrictive
How can you come to this conclusion when Reason can be "Rewired" to any good music production software which in turn would allow you to use independent VSTs...restrictive it isnt.
you are missing my point. yes it is restrictive, because in order to be able to rewire you must also own a different production program. you are basically saying on order for reason to be less restrictive you must own more software! This is a very different situation, which i clearly wasn't referring to. Using reason as a standalone production program can be restrictive. judging from the tone of your comment it seems that you are ridiculously over defensive of the program.
Actually Okidot, I agree, I did use reason for some projects a while back, I was thinking to myself the other day, what do I miss from Reason, i'd have to say and agree, Maelstrom, I do love the sounds it puts out, particularly bottle blows etc. But Reason can be run as a client via Rewire, so it could be used if need be.
Also, in my line of work, I do much orchestral/cinematic style, I use very high end VST's and they just are so phenominal with my hardware modules. So I'll stick with VST's :)
yeh im actually in the process of getting reason4 to use rewired into ableton specifically for 'maelstrom'. i cant find any other synth like it. its amazing for making kick drums and subs. what orchestral vsts are you using. i own a copy of steinbergs edirol. this east west quantum leap looks amazing! massive gb useage though
Hi, I use eastwest quantum leap Gold Full edition and storm drum I and II, eastwest symphonic choirs and also Halion symphonic orchestra, which is also fantastic.
Combined they are amazing. I also use a variety of synths, novation supernova II, A- station, Nexus 2, Vanguard & others.
OK, I would say you are partially right.Reason isnt entirely unrestrictive, but what software is?.My point is I feel reason works perfect for me as in..if I want to put an idea down fast, before I lose "the feel".Then it is the right pallet for my ideas.
Well in general terms of music making, it is far from restrictive, but in my earlier comment, i was summing it up in comparison to other programs that allow you use a wide range of vst/vsti's, which reason does not. There are many variations of reasons and types of music making that require useage of certain vst's. It was on this basis i was referring to reason as restrictive. As regards software that is entirely unrestrictive, A.live seems to be the most versitile platform ive encountered.
Ive used other software-cubase,fl studio,cm studio, garage band.etc, and none of them come close to what I want. One of my musical friends hails from a DJ background,he prefers to work with LIVE as his work is sample/loop based.Whenever we collaborate our projects, its simple,we just rewire reason with live.
Can someone plz help me. I've just started using Reason 4 coz the sound is so fucking great. but i've only been able to use one istrument. whenever i add my second instrument in the rack it never has any sound. i know this is probably something really simple but its starting to annoy me lol. cheers.
Reason is like a real hardware rack... The upper part is ur soundcard. And after that u have to add a mixer! Always... since ur usining multible inputs(instruments).
In other words Soundcard has 1 input so u need the mixer to split it to many inputs! Thats it. Hope it helped
ye man the first thing you should always make is a 're-mix' mixing desk, unless your re-wiring each channel seperately out to a master software sych as Cubase, Sonar, pro-tools or albeton!
would you stop banging on about your fuckin VSTs....if you dont like Reason.....fuck off and watch something that interests you..........Ive used cubase since 1990,pro logic, cakewalk,FL studio,Ableton live(which I have rewired to Reason) I think this is the best music software money can buy......but thats just my opinion.........Thor has really lived up to its expectations.
i dont know if your high or made a simple mistake, but i never said anything negative about reason, in fact i am a reason user myself. ( i say this because your comment was a reply to my comment)
you're so right , it's an awesome program that reason , but it should be used with yer own sounds, if u use the reason soundbanks or synths it all sounds the same
Hey, I don't know if anyone knows about Thom Yorke from the band Radiohead, and his solo album The Eraser. There is this song on it called Cymbal Rush which has this awsome scratchy/glitchy undulating sound in it. I want to know how to reproduce that in Reason. I've tried so many times but just havn't got the sound right. Any help?
like the guy said in the video, that was merely a tip of the iceberg on what you can do with thor. nobody's gonna come and make all those awesome sounds for you, you gotta work and make them yourself. (faggot lolol)
Coming from a guy who probably has no clue about synthesis.
Thor is a scarily powerful synth. It you can select 3 fucking oscillators and route them through 3 fucking filters! Not 1 but 3!!
You can get a 1000 sounds out of just 1 oscillator and filter, imagine what you'll get from 3 of each! You can literally create over a million sounds!
I created this amazing heavy bass and lead sound out of just 1 subtrator synth. It was awesome! Thor is 3 times more powerful than subtractor.
of all the software i have used for music recording, Reason was somthing i could not figure out so i said fuck it and deleted it ... what a waste of money ... i hate Reason and it hates me
Thor sounds amazing. The step sequencer rocks!I was going to get an MS2000 until i saw Thor so decided to wait.If you want a synth that is easy to control, stable, has a low cpu hit and sounds awesome then take a look at Thor :)
I have a question. I'm a newbie so please go easy on me. How do you place the Thor note sequence in the bottom of the programmer in Thor to a track below without using the matrix, ect? I made a sequence, but can't seem to get it down to the tracks below. I'm sure it's something easy I'm overlooking. Thanks for the help!
right click the device you wish to send to a sequencer track ( make sure thor sequencer track is selected on main sequencer) and from the menu select 'Send to MIDI Sequence Track' or some similar option.
Propellerhead said that if they were going to put audio in reason, they didn't want to half-step, they want it to compete with other audio applications. I believe they're going to in the future. They're running out of ideas.
They already have a top of line synth, top of the line sampler, reverb, can't make Redrum any better, I mean, what other sound generator could they put in reason without improving on the old ones? Audio is coming!
Just need the flipping upgrade an it's taking forever to hit the stores here in Glasgow. Been messing about with the demo and it feels real good. That Thor and especially the regroove is what has got me all excited. But no doubt there is plenty in there to wow anybody.

@mlkdfs Quite easy in Reason: Simply load a sample in the nn-xt, and put the "play mode" to "reverse". That's it

my only problem with reason is that you do have to take time to edit the kicks/beats, just to get a good kick.
ive produced the track in my profile using this programme and got it mastered professionally.
check it out people and let me know what ya think as its signed and being released summer time, its DJ KAY - WATERFALL

Editing kicks to make something unique is part of your job as a software-using musician....
If people let you have all their unique sounds right out of the box, then they wouldn't have anything unique themselves.
iheartsedric 2 years ago 3
i agree with you, but surely reason could supply a bigger ammount withoutout having to use maximiser etc

Yeah, that is true.
I think if you got a few good refills you would be much happier with your drum sounds. Try anything from Sonic Reality or direct from Propellerhead.

katzcivic 3 years ago
yeh im actually in the process of getting reason4 to use rewired into ableton specifically for 'maelstrom'. i cant find any other synth like it. its amazing for making kick drums and subs. what orchestral vsts are you using. i own a copy of steinbergs edirol. this east west quantum leap looks amazing! massive gb useage though
okidot 3 years ago
Hi, I use eastwest quantum leap Gold Full edition and storm drum I and II, eastwest symphonic choirs and also Halion symphonic orchestra, which is also fantastic.
Combined they are amazing. I also use a variety of synths, novation supernova II, A- station, Nexus 2, Vanguard & others.
Which is why, I have no place for Reason :)
But yep I do like maelstrom'...
katzcivic 3 years ago
OK, I would say you are partially right.Reason isnt entirely unrestrictive, but what software is?.My point is I feel reason works perfect for me as in..if I want to put an idea down fast, before I lose "the feel".Then it is the right pallet for my ideas.
crystaltipps04 3 years ago
Well in general terms of music making, it is far from restrictive, but in my earlier comment, i was summing it up in comparison to other programs that allow you use a wide range of vst/vsti's, which reason does not. There are many variations of reasons and types of music making that require useage of certain vst's. It was on this basis i was referring to reason as restrictive. As regards software that is entirely unrestrictive, A.live seems to be the most versitile platform ive encountered.
okidot 3 years ago
Ive used other software-cubase,fl studio,cm studio, garage band.etc, and none of them come close to what I want. One of my musical friends hails from a DJ background,he prefers to work with LIVE as his work is sample/loop based.Whenever we collaborate our projects, its simple,we just rewire reason with live.
crystaltipps04 3 years ago
Reason is a class of its own! It dont need any vsts. i think its Perfect!

Can someone plz help me. I've just started using Reason 4 coz the sound is so fucking great. but i've only been able to use one istrument. whenever i add my second instrument in the rack it never has any sound. i know this is probably something really simple but its starting to annoy me lol. cheers.
heyjim92 3 years ago
Reason is like a real hardware rack... The upper part is ur soundcard. And after that u have to add a mixer! Always... since ur usining multible inputs(instruments).
In other words Soundcard has 1 input so u need the mixer to split it to many inputs! Thats it. Hope it helped
BabyCrazzy 3 years ago 3
ye man the first thing you should always make is a 're-mix' mixing desk, unless your re-wiring each channel seperately out to a master software sych as Cubase, Sonar, pro-tools or albeton!
noisehelp 3 years ago
create a mixer before you create a sound device.
1lilnigga 3 years ago
would you stop banging on about your fuckin VSTs....if you dont like Reason.....fuck off and watch something that interests you..........Ive used cubase since 1990,pro logic, cakewalk,FL studio,Ableton live(which I have rewired to Reason) I think this is the best music software money can buy......but thats just my opinion.........Thor has really lived up to its expectations.
crystaltipps04 3 years ago
i dont know if your high or made a simple mistake, but i never said anything negative about reason, in fact i am a reason user myself. ( i say this because your comment was a reply to my comment)

Fl studio is better
OZaJi 3 years ago
Fl studio sucks, besides it started out as freeware. reason offers way more complexity and varying sounds

fl studio still the best

What program is the best for making techno/trance music I have heard these are good fruity loops and Magix Music Maker?
AbsoluteTechno 3 years ago
reason always makes the bass lines the same way, I can recognise any Reason made song.
JotaSk8Bdr 3 years ago
you're so right , it's an awesome program that reason , but it should be used with yer own sounds, if u use the reason soundbanks or synths it all sounds the same
i prefer working with vsti & nuendo

Yes u need a MIDI keyboard in order to record and edit notes, but u can "draw" notes with the mouse only. But it's harder.

Any help?

talkinghead22 3 years ago
All the people who say Thor sounds like shit don't have a clue about synthesis.
Its not upto the synth, but upto the player what he can make a synth sound like.
Just like if you hear a horrible guitar lead, its cuz of the horrible player who doesn't know how to play leads. Not cuz the guitar is shite.
Thor is amazing if you just know how to use it the right way.
afaquerulz 3 years ago 4
i only hit the tip of reason 4 and the potential it has kinda scares me a bit... R4FTW!!
ohiopctech 3 years ago 2
is it true that there's a quality difference between the sound produced by cubase than reason???
21centimetres 3 years ago
Somehow yes.
A lot of musicians Rewire Reason through Cubase to do the mastering with VST plugins, or add more VSTIs and real time record vocals.

of Reason 4?
Pure Thor sound. ONLY THOR.
Tell me if that sounds like s..t to you.
ShadowDreadblade 3 years ago
Does Thor sounds like s...t?
WTF? You have no idea of
sound sculpturing.
Don't ya?
You just want a program that you press a button and it does the whole work for you! Don't ya?
I bet you never EVER used R4. Not even a demo!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
All that choice and it sounds like shite
peterm3964 3 years ago
like the guy said in the video, that was merely a tip of the iceberg on what you can do with thor. nobody's gonna come and make all those awesome sounds for you, you gotta work and make them yourself. (faggot lolol)
julyzerg 3 years ago 8
Coming from a guy who probably has no clue about synthesis.
Thor is a scarily powerful synth. It you can select 3 fucking oscillators and route them through 3 fucking filters! Not 1 but 3!!
You can get a 1000 sounds out of just 1 oscillator and filter, imagine what you'll get from 3 of each! You can literally create over a million sounds!
I created this amazing heavy bass and lead sound out of just 1 subtrator synth. It was awesome! Thor is 3 times more powerful than subtractor.
afaquerulz 3 years ago 3
dont know if its better. but if you handle it well you can get amazing sounds aout of it.
btw, vst's also costs money

Thor sounds amazing. The step sequencer rocks!I was going to get an MS2000 until i saw Thor so decided to wait.If you want a synth that is easy to control, stable, has a low cpu hit and sounds awesome then take a look at Thor :)
glowballist 4 years ago
so in general... it's an upgraded Malström?
Warlost 4 years ago 2
No, Malström is a pure graintabel synthesizer. Thor, on the other hand, features also graintable synthesis, but also virtual analogue.
The 'new big thing' with Thor compared to the earlier synthesizers in Reason is that it is modular and has a relativly exstensive modulation matrix.
skag1 4 years ago 2
ok! thank's for the information! :D

YungHoodz I believe you can record audio in reason 4, I bought a tutorial DVD and it has a chapter on it, haven't read it yet tho
jhemstone 4 years ago
I have a question. I'm a newbie so please go easy on me. How do you place the Thor note sequence in the bottom of the programmer in Thor to a track below without using the matrix, ect? I made a sequence, but can't seem to get it down to the tracks below. I'm sure it's something easy I'm overlooking. Thanks for the help!
monstermash2 4 years ago
right click the device you wish to send to a sequencer track ( make sure thor sequencer track is selected on main sequencer) and from the menu select 'Send to MIDI Sequence Track' or some similar option.

Reason 4 is a monster, the only thing missing is a damn Audio Track for Recording straight into reason...
why dont you guys put one in, i wouldnt have to use any other program in my lifetime, haha...
YungHoodz 4 years ago 5
Propellerhead said that if they were going to put audio in reason, they didn't want to half-step, they want it to compete with other audio applications. I believe they're going to in the future. They're running out of ideas.
atakproductions 4 years ago
They already have a top of line synth, top of the line sampler, reverb, can't make Redrum any better, I mean, what other sound generator could they put in reason without improving on the old ones? Audio is coming!
