Please forgive my ignorance, but what "key" is this gaita tuned in? I hope I'm using the proper term. I've listened to numerous asturian gaita recordings and some sound far too high-pitched for my taste, whereas this one is far more pleasant to my ears.

@Samurai8989 It's tuned in Bb (Si bemol). Asturian bagpipes is usually tuned in C, however is tuned in Bb when is played to accompany a singer. These two keys are the most common (specially C) but there are also other keys, C# or A for instance. The last one is used in folk music so that it can fit easily with guitars, violins etc.

Well, they both have different chanter reed types. Also, the Galician one has three drones. Asturian has traditionally only one bass. Maybe their is also a more varied selection of scales in Galician. Im not too sure on that though.

The place is called "Asturias." The associated adjective is "Asturian" in English, and "asturiana" in Castilian.

The gaita asturiana and gaita gallega were very similar historically but have taken very different paths in the last century or so. The Galician pipes have been made easier to play. If you can play a recorder or penny whistle, the gallega is fairly easy to pick up because the fingering is very similar. The fingering is "open."

The gaita asturiana, in contrast, has closed fingering on the lower or right hand and open on the upper or left hand. This closed fingering allows a different style of ornamentation which produces quick pops and bleeps.

Daniel is right that the Galcian usually has two or three drones, the Asturian one, although under the influence of the Scottish pipes, some use up to three drones.

That's not exactly true. Traditionally, Asturian bagpipes would have one drone but it was not rare to make some of them with two drones: one called "roncón" and the other "ronquín". So, both types are equally traditional here.

As you say, asturian bagpipe is bigger and has a different fingering, but also a wider melodic amplitude than the galician one.

That's interesting. I've only seen one Asturian gaita with a ronquín, one Xuacu Ameva plays. How frequent is it? Who else plays or played them?

You have some good examples on traditional piper Xuacu la Cabañina, Xuan Rodríguez from folk band Llan de Cubel (in B flat) or even Hevia. Some traditional luthiers like Cogollu are known for making them. Nowadays, almost all luthiers make them. There is also an interesting statue of a piper with ronquín from A Roda, Tapia, made in 1800.

Daniel is also right that the reeds are different. I am not aware of plastic chanter reeds for either, but there are very good plastic/metal drone reeds.

The Asturian and Galician gaitas are available in similar keys or tonalities, but there is a difference in the sound quality of the two, at least in recent years.

The layout of the stocks on the bag is also different and the style of detailing in the wood turnings tend to be different, too.

There must be other differences I'm not aware of.

bagpipes are not originally from scotland. the first bagpipe was from Sumaria which is now part of Iraq. the empereur Nero was a player of this sumarian bagpipe. the bagpipes came to europe with the romans then later with the soldiers who came back from the crusades and it was in france where the bagpipes where really developed. there are 16 different bagpipes that come from france. thus France is the country of the bagpipes , scotland was one of the last countries to get the bagpipes. steve

Cantar bien, neña. Si quieres cantar bien, neña, y tener la voz delgada. La voz delgada, beberás agua serena del río Nalón de Pravia.

En la TPA alteraron la letra de las canciones, posiblemente al editar el vídeo.
