I guess its because your oven is pretty heavily built. A $35 el-cheapo Walmart special would likely soon burn out from the abuse. You can't really call that energy discharge "ball lightning", though. It only exists as long as there are fine carbon particles present (such as the smoke produced by the flame) and the phenomenon only continues as long as there's a constant flow of high energy supplied by the microwave. Ball lightning seems to act independently once it's created.
It's very cool. But I've heard that this produces a poisonous gas (I'm not clever enough to know which), which is probably why most people do it under a glass, which is caught under the class so they can then remove afterwards, without breathing in the air being thrown out by the microwave fan.
Thats amazing!!! Is that because the sub-leutonic orbosphere is charged by a rapidly alternating frequency discharge similar to that of a dicreedian beam??
you're a jerkoff. none of that makes sense, not to mention it would've been extremely difficult for sigmund freud, the austrian father of PSYCHOANALYSIS, to prove anything in the world of physics or chemistry in 1837, considering he wasn't even born until 1856.
Ball lightning isn't definitely plasma, there are alternate theories simpler than a stable cloud of ionized plasma. Still, neat effect, not as neat as under the glass.
Yeah i've seen a microwave blow up due to the presence of metal in it, the door just blew off, or opened without possibility to close it again, it's a long time ago.
actually darkness3m0, technically they are the same thing because all ball lightning is, is a stable form of plasma. and if you were able to create the same thing without a magnetitron(spelling?) the plasma would eventually turn into a ball because of the lack of magnetic fields to attract it
thats super excited carbonetic gas, excited from the microwaves from the diode in the waveguide. plasma. also, next time, burn the match under a THICK glass upside down over the match.trap the carbon, and get a consistant plasma reaction.
It's actually not one of those little candles. The base was a rubber foot (from under the washing machine)that i had lying around, into which I stuck a tooth pick and then lit.
(It does look a lot like one of those little tea-light candles though doesn't it.)
The fourth state of matter (after solid, liquid and gas). A state of matter composed of charged particles, like ions and electrons, and possibly some neutral particles.
ive done this before, go out and try to find a cone shaped glass to fit over it, you will keep the ball of plasma floating, anothe thing I wanted to try string a piece of bare copper magnet wire across the top, maye halfway between the match stick and the top and see what it does...
Im not sure, if someone would try it we would all know, i am thinking that it might want to stick to the copper wire, or it might just vaporize the wire, I am not sure. I havnt been able to get ahold of a new microwave to test it, since my old one is blown to hell lol
Looks like a way to ruin a perfectly good microwave.

@logik316
The mistake is in thinking that it was actually a perfectly good microwave to begin with.
However, this was filmed over 4 years ago and the microwave is still kicking.

Need a larger microwave and flame.

Interesting!
I wanted to do that from a candle on the turntable to see what happens to the flame trail.
Your jar is too tall and has metal cap.

A normal sliced sour pickle will do it too, and you can put it in a container, it's crazy stuff.

people do it in a glass to protect the microwave from damage, as well as poisonous gas.

You're supposed to put the match UNDER the jar.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
orcranian partical beam will afflenge to nitric acid mollecules thereby inducing photoplasmic neutroniums.
This has been proved in scientific america magazine by profesor sigmund frued in 1837.
His studys of photo voltaic cells concluded 100% osmosis to the nuclaic acid protein found only in hershy bars.

cut a grape into 4 pieces, but keep the skin intact, so 4 parts are connected. put it in a plate, and microwave!
really great plasma... and no glasses needed :D

it does hurt your microwave, but it's like "nos"ing your car. Just causes like 5 years of regular wear and tear in one second.
