she is young and confident. god bless that energy. All negative resposes are quite obviously too old to feel or matter. Do what you do Alisa! and by the way.. Thank you.
This sounds almost EXACTLY like Dupre. I think she really needs to find her own interpretation. And oh god I can't stand the insincere looks of emotion in her face.. /(^0^)\
Have to say, she has a VERY weird bow hold, very much slanting away from the string! I guess it works for her though, 'cause she gets a damn good sound out of that instrument! That's as far as my praise goes though, because I hated this interpretation!! She vibrates far too much when it isn't called for, and is sliding all over the place, which really ruins the lines of the melody! Also, is there REALLY any need for so much rubato?? She pulls it around far more than is appropriate!
i think it is amazing and gives me chills and it is a very powerful performance. I idolize Jacqueline du Pre too but still love this performance and Alisa Weilerstein is an extremely talented cellist. I would spend many hours in the practice room just to sound like her. great job too daniel barenboim
Thank you for uploading this...my daugther plays with alot of passion...and love to watch Alissa in action...the knuckle heads who want to judge base on good or bad should shot their computers....and stop giving feedback....do not hate what you do not understand....damn good upload....we love it.
Im sorry but I don't like this at all, it feels held back and way too contained! Her passion seems fake, and it sounds very mono-tonal in terms of dynamics and phrasing. No one could ever be Jacqueline Du Pre, and I'm sure Barenboim knows this.
@Lau1793 Seriously? GTFO asswipe. Alisa is one of the most passionate musicians alive today. Dont judge people who are having more success than you. That shit is just immature. Watch what you say.
@makuletboy I am a very opinionated person, and yes I agree I came across as very strong, but Jaqueline Du Pre has been my idol since I was 5 years old, and the Elgar is one of her most famed works, so I tend to compare other people who perform it with her. I am an extremely passionate cellist, and yes I am not as successful as Alisa, however I get frustrated by people who fake passion, which I can usually tell by there phrasing.
@Lau1793 In competitions I am usually marked down for slight intonation problems but applauded for passion and musicality, so it frustrates me when I see people win solely because of technicality and through faking their passion. Of course she's more successful than me, Im still 17 yrs old, who knows what will come for me in the future. I know different pieces can be interpreted in different ways, but I simply do not like her interpretation at all and feel that it comes across as fake.
@Lau1793 Sure you are entitled to your own opinions - but there is also a reason why she is playing with the Berlin Philharmonic. I'd reconsider if I were you.
@Lau1793 It would be much better for you if you spent your free time in the practice room rather than wasting it making negative comments on youtube. Life is too short.
@makuletboy What an incredibly stupid and arrogant thing to say, everyone's entitled to their opinions! That's basically like saying "you can't comment critically on how good a restaurant is because you can't cook"! Grow up for goodness sake, and learn that not everyone is going to agree with you - it only makes YOU look like the immature one when you insult people you don't know, just because they happen to have a different opinion to you!
I think that Barenboim probably felt that this was his destiny, and for all the pain that he lived through, I can imagine a man living his entire life over again if only 13 minutes of it were this majestic.
3:34 I love that the orchestra is just as passionate about the piece as she is. Just look at the concertmaster and his stand partner. That is how powerful this music can be. The passion and emotion gets passed all around the orchestra. I love it. Truly amazing.

One is the cellist Alisa Weilerstein, 29, an exciting and adventurous performer....
"You praise my work too much" Elgar wrote "but do you understand it" Jaeger apologised for Novello's wretched payment for the work (fifteen guineas) to which Elgar responded: "What I feel is the utter want of sympathy...Now my music, such as it is, is alive, you say it has heart - I always say to my wife (over any piece or passage of my work that pleases me): "if you cut that it would bleed!" You seem to see that, but who else does?"

I've heard this concerto many times and she plays it in a very touching manner! thanks to her and the great conductor.

It took him many years to perform this with ANY cellist.I think Weilerstein does a beautiful job.

If it weren't for the weight of the instrument, I think at times she would just collapse at the power of this performance coming through her.

Was she REALLY sharp at 9:41 or is that just her vibrato?
