Hmnn I love my Peavey Triple XXX been playing that for 10 years and started playing thru a Peavey Ultra120 in 1992 then the Ultra plus. I never liked the Butcher and now that I heard the latest version I still don't like it. Id have to play thru one personally to review it but Im not impressed so far.
I own one of the 'old' Butcher amps. I'd describe it as moderately gained, like a one-channel JCM-800 with pre and post knobs. Its great for classic rock all the way to some of that iron maiden style 'metal'. I've got a 100 watt super lead and a '65 bassman that I typically use, but the Butcher gets the call if I need a bit more gain than those amps.
Damaged01 - There was an older Butcher amp that also had low gain. It was a classic rock amp. This is merely a new version of that amp (based on the JSX, XXX etc) that has classic gain for those people who remember the old version of the amp, but just want a little more flexibility. I own one of those old Peavey Butcher amps and it was a JCM-800 clone. I've modified mine to be more like the JCM-800 as a matter of fact so mine is closer to JCM-800 than Peavey could legally make it.
@Slushpuppy154 - You know, I'm an old school thrash player and I was playing thrash in the 80's and I remember the Butcher heads but never really looked into them until a couple of years ago, the vintage ones, I always thought the same thing that they were really heavy for stuff like Slayer, Death, Obituary etc. They weren't? Why DID they name them 'Butcher' then? Look at the logo on the old amps it even looks like a death metal band logo from back then...
@hrgiger6 - I really can't say. It's very confusing for most guitar guys because this isn't a high gain amp at all. The JCM-800 isn't high gain either. I think it was just a weird marketing decision to try and bring in the metal guys who wanted the heavy tones that a JCM-800 can make if driven with a pedal. If Peavey was smart, they would have built in a footswitcheable additional tube gain stage to the amp and removed the treble peaking circuits that Marshall put in the JCM-800.
@Slushpuppy154 - that is one thing I have considered, that pretty much any super heavy riffing is going to have some sort of pedal thrown in. So maybe the amp was tailored with that in mind. I guess there may be amps out there that can truly do everything for metal without help, but I haven't heard them. Even Slayer has fallen victim to this fallacy. Kerrys marshall demo sounds so thin, as does their new cd. All you can hear is the pick flipping back and forth like pants in the wind...
@Slushpuppy154 - I don't know if thats a problem with recording or the amps used but it sounds pitiful. You would tend to think the more money and more advanced in your career the better it would sound. I mean compare to Incubus - the thrash band not pop - their song "sadistic sinner" from their original release there is no pick flipping sounds on that track! THAT is how fast alternate picking should sound! >> MjjBTHYnWzo <<
The Butcher amp series was introduced in the "80's (1895?) and was discontinued in the nineties. It has been brought back by Peavey with a few modern upgrades. The name is original to Peavey and as it is a remake of an earlier line of products it is reminiscent of an earlier era in amp gain. Having Butcher in it's name is not supposed to evoke "death metal" at all.
wow what's the deal with the guy's accent sounds like he's from Texas, Australia, England, Ireland, Scotland, and some other european country (btw I'm talking about the guy at the beggining)
"support products that are built in the United States"
What a douchebag. It's the rich American CEOs that take their companies to Asia so they can pay some 15 year old kid to solder shit and screw screws in all day for 50 cents and make the owners even richer.
I think the amp is gonna be good though. El34s? Awesome.
Oh Peavey what have you done? The OG Butchers are totally great, I have one, and it totally keeps up and sometimes outshines a marshall 800, simple, loud and mean, this looks like pussy shit, with loads of crappy features..... Why didn't you just re-issue the OG Butcher, it's a superb creature?... An insult to the real Butcher.
Man they definitely "BUTCHERED" ..the BUTCHER!..my guitarist has an ORIGINAL BUTCHER, and this amp sounds nothing like it! at all!!..the original Butcher has some of the HIGHEST GAIN i've ever heard!..also has 4 outputs to send to 4 different cabs. I was hoping they (peavey) would someday re-issue "THE BUTCHER", but,..i must say, this amp, is nothing like i would expect from PEAVEY,..they should have gave it the "old BUTCHER" sound,..with a taste of the J.S.X. or 5150.
I did catch that,..but,..coming from a loooooong time user & abuser of Peavey equip., I would expect something with a tad bit more gain, with a name like the "Butcher".
Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll release a "Butcher II".
For the newbs' out there, the name "Butcher" comes from an amp Peavey made years ago. It's not new. And FWIW, what would be the marketing point for Peavey to make yet another super high gain head when they have four already? This head answers the needs of those who want a Peavey head with decent gain but more tone options.
@JohnnyD0nny well i dont think peaveys too concerned with looks they seem to only care about quality. the only amp that i think that stands out as far as looks go for them is the vypyr series. they just look mean. which they are
who knows for sure!Joe said a while ago on his website that he will give the fans the actual reason when he is legaly free to say something in public.
Personally I really don't believe that he fell so much in love with the JVM Marshall...The JVM sounds so flat compared to the JSX...you have to be deaf not to hear it.
I understand people who say that he was better with Marshall in the old days but back then he used the 6100 LM which was/is an amazing amplifier, if not one of the best marshalls
no...it's actually far far away from the original Butcher design...this IS the JSX 50 in a new box...they probably used an old Product name to save themselves the Roalty payments...maybe to cover some of the production cost damage of the JSX 50 when Joe left them for marshall...
It looks great though...and it looks very useable as an amp.
@RjRocker87 - No way, they don't need to change the name its perfect, they need to change the AMP and make it fit the name!! We've been dealt a crooked hand I tell ya!
When is the bugera model coming out :P but besides that i think this is amp is far too complex, I think people should concentrate more on playing, adjust the tone with your fingers, it can work wonders
i agree, but any self-respecting, not spoiled player who would get an amp as expensive as this would already have those aspects set and would want to get the absolute best tone they could.
It's really not complex at all, 2 channels each with a boost, plus a master boost. It's really geared to inspire you while you play live to step out. The crunch channel is absolutely amazing.
How much distortion/Gain is there on the Crunch channel?Could you give me an example of the highest amount of distotion it can give you?For example can it reach the JSXs crunch channel?
The only difference I can see is the addition of a boost switch on the clean channel and 100w vs. 50w...but it is switchable. Both have the exact same switch, knob and input layout.
He is one of the MANY reasons why I un-suscribed from the channel and magazine.
Like honestly, if you pay GuitarWorld to say postive things, they will. They don't actually review the amp. I remember they gave the Marshall MG the "Gold Award" for the month, and we all know how shit Marshall MG's are.
am I the only one who thinks this is the JSX 50 in a new box?...(since Joe Satriani left Peavey and went to Marshall at the time when the JSX 50 version was coming out)
The name of the amp is totally misleading. Talk about a wrong name in a wrong place..

why would anyone want less gain? give us the option of it in the amp...you can always crank it down.

first of all somebody that can play guitar should be demoing the amp.
secondly I agree with the other post down there. The name is great but with the name butcher it should be a singal channel amp that just rocks.
After all, a butcher is all about slicing meat. Plain and simple.
IDK. I'm drunk.
