Yeah, I knew this song in the time of the Monkeys, and now heard it by the original author and continues me liking as in the first time... ...The version of Smash Mouth liked me also
Neil Diamond's version of "I'm a Believer" surpasses The Monkees' version on different levels. The Monkees' recorded & released their version before Neil did, although Neil wrote it.
Compared to the Monkee's version, Neil's original uses some great orchestration. Both horns and strings. I suppose his version was more expensive to produce due to that.
@thenazz32 Well, that's not entirely true. Neil got the publishing royalties, but not the mechanical royalties (except for his version). The Monkees made a good deal off the mechanical royatlies for their version, but I think Neil probably made more in the end.
How could they have made more money than Neil off this song? Neil gets writer's royalties which continue every time the song is played or recorded and sold.
Neil Diamond wasn't part of my generation but I put him on my bucket list to see live. He's such an icon, so unique and a pioneer in the industry. I love music in general, but this guy is on my top 3 list for live performances. Very enjoyable and entertaining show. Dancing galore throughout the entire performance and a very festive atmosphere. If I get the opportunity to see him again I will certainly go.
@nyseattitude If you are new to ND, buy the original Hot August Night (MCA 1972) CD pack - his first live performances at the Greek. Listen to them over and over. These are the core ND hits. Follow that up with songs from songs from Serenade, Beautiful Noise, I'm Glad You're Here Tonight, The Jazz Singer, you can skip to Tennessee Moon, Three Chord Opera and Home Before Dark. To me, the original core (Hot August Night) is the best CD ever produced and released. Welcome and good lisening.
Here, Neil experienced a goddess who emancipated him to dig in the title of the song. On Her face he found the entire song with its catch-line. A spiritual feeling of Love from a teenage Jewish boy from Brooklyn. Maturity at its Peak ! Numero uno. ~ SuperSolomon74 (India)
@TheChak03 And it made him more money than any single one of his songs, too. Or so he said in a Blender interview, as I recall. Tell you the truth, I think Mickey Dolenz does it better, but that's probably a sign Neil knew who he was writing for.
Of, course, even though he put his recorded version on an album a year AFTER the monkees released theirs, and this was 45 years ago mind you, we should all just KNOW that he was the originator. I love your pretentiousness.
Neil I should of known this was yours, but my sister fell in love with Davy Jones over this, hey I was shooting pool in the family room, listening to holly / holy. Love em bothe. Oh I,m oldish, that was ya back then.
I don't think so....Neil has made beaucoups bucks off this song......you can count on that. And if you add all the money Smashmouth (love 'em) and Monkees (love 'em) made and double it- you wouldn't come close to Neil's bank. No way!
He has sung this alot but did he ever record "A Little Bit Me..A Little Bit You" he wrote so much great stuff in the 60's he never thought about running dry so why not give some away.....the songs made the Monkees.
I can see how the Monkees version of this became a hit, much more mainstream sounding, this version is great too, but alot different, more or less country-western sounding. Neil Diamond is an amazing musician though, never the less.
The Beatles never had anything to do with this. It has been covered by The Monkees and Smashmouth, who both probably made a lot more money off of it than Neil did...sadly.
@bertrand54 Actually songwriters make more money off of the songs that the recording artists do. Given the fact that Neil Diamond wrote the song, you can bet he made way more money than Smashmouth and the Monkees. All the Monkees and Smashmouth did was help Neil Diamond make more money
@bertrand54 (sarcasm alert) Yeah, poor Neil. Because of that travesty Neil probably can't make the payment on his fourth mansion or ninth sports car.
P.S. He might still get royalties from it anyway since he's the writer. I mean, I'm speculating here, but it wouldn't surprise me if, say, Dream Works had to pay him something in order to use "I'm a Believer" in the first Shrek movie.
@bertrand54 No..as the songwriter Neil would and still does receive all the royaties for this song..All of the Monkees were on a salary for the show..They were payed scale for their acting and singing.
@smasherhits whats all the the fuss?.... Neil is plenty rich more than he could ever spend he is in the top 10 in all time record sales thats mega $... he was in one of the highest divorce settlements (like over 100 mil) and he was glad to do it. now what does that tell you..
ist so schwer unter all dem Müll Mal ne anständige Aufnahme von dem Lied zu bekommen. Würde gern erfahren, wer sich da ausgerechnet mit meinen Lieblingsliedern austobt??? Ach ne, ich weiß es ja
dasha....neil diamond wrote this...and his manager had a daughter named donnalynn..who i went out with 1975-76.......her whole house was full of GOLD records all over the place. a great classic song by a singer who is honored in america,,,just like a elvis to alot of people.
