The US innovates while China steals. That's not to say China hasn't historically been an innovator (paper, print, gun powder and harnessing nature for power are believed to have originated in China) and couldn't become one again. Communism stymies innovation, no question. East Europe innovated more before and after communism, the fact that China is communist is a blessing to the Western World. East Asians innovate: Korea, Taiwan and Japan. Europeans innovate as well, but all under democracy.

@lostoc714 True, but China depends heavily on the West. China buys a lot of grain from the US, especially during the period of the Russian drought where Putin banned its export. China depends on the west to make up for the inefficiencies of communism much as the Soviet Union did. Communism is supposed to be an isolationist paradise free from capitalism, China is far from that. Inflation (much like the Jimmy Carter era) could reduce the debt to pennies on the dollar, but a tough pill for the USA.

@notausertoday The China today is a lot different to what is was prior to its major economic reforms 30 years ago. As a whole, the Chinese economy is playing catch up for the lost decades in many respects, for that immitation is the cheapest and fastest way to achieve this. This will continue to happen for a while, the latter/younger chinese generations will be more innovative than their parents.

I agree that under the 'leader', many innovations benefited us greatly, but we should also look on the other side of reality. For the 21st century, is USA still the 'leader'? I don't think so. Perhaps the transition is inevitable, and USA just have to accept it and manage to its best, but definitely not 'shoot' China during the APEC summit like that.
