Ghosts can happen without Live or System Link. I was playing alone WITHOUT Xbox Live, on Halo 2 map Terminal, when I randomly start dying. No Lag, No Live, No System Link, No other people. Then, I saw a spartan sliding on the ground towards me. I quit, and haven't played that map since.

Rather easily. But on Halo 3, ghosts are encounterd in large gamerooms fulled with people. Primarily 8-16 player matches.

"Ghosts" are errors in the games code that cause the game to spawn another version of a player. Halo ghosts are caused by the game taking note of the players in the game room and finding a "ghost" player(a player that lagged very horrindously and quit or joined) and then creates another version of that player. However, since that player isn't in the game at that time, the game fills it's code with an A.I. player that glitches the fuck out. On Halo 2 ghosts can be encountered with 2 players

I think its a glitch. Some type of error caused the game to spawn something different than what was intended. It ended up spawning a Campaign AI

or maybe they had coded bots for multiplayer so you could play alone, but they scrapped it, but now the game sometimes accidentally spawns it by some weird glitch.
