Ah the classic water hammer caused by a faulty ballcock valve. just replace it with a metal one or a better one. sometimes it can be caused by the shut off valve conflicting with the ballcock.

A guy came and showed me what looked like plastic washers which were cracked in three pieces. It was a white washer but it needed to be replaced. This was a new luxury toilet so black may be white washers now. You are correct! The noise was insane!

I think that the problem is from the cistern supply. Possibly an airlock. You don't necessarily need a plumber, but I can't remember what you have to do.
