  • Im 17 years old now. And last year I played this, too.

I practiced so hard and I never reached this level!

I can't imagine how hard it was for you. I think its clear that you have talent. But I hope you still enjoy playing the violin. :-)

  • Babies crying, people clapping at the wrong time. Poor girl.

  • Very impressive technic. It is in the singing bits of the performance that she needs to work on an evenness of sound over the length of the bow stroke. With each downstroke there is an initial crescendo of sound which then becomes softer.

  • she's gona be the next markov

  • Woow love it

  • its so clean... i wish i can play as clean as her..

  • Be patient, bud. She's still a kid.

  • Why the Asians are so superior on classic music ?????the europeans are loosing their culture

  • Comment removed

  • @pimbadoti They still instill the value of hard work while we are instilling the values of being spoiled.

  • @pimbadoti Its not superior but talent..

  • What an ignorance audience !! aplauding in the middle of the movement .. wow !! they must be liberals

  • @jorgeoscar1000 They are the ignorance Asian! Applaud my ass.

  • @jorgeoscar1000 I think they didn't know it wasn't over yet. Because maybe they're parents from the children in her music school and probably not into classical music or experts, but just have their kida there taking lessons :)

  • i've never seen a black violinist !! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

  • jajajajajaja no habia terminado el concierto y les aplaudieron antes pero muy bien

  • mmmm...mmmm...mmm... HA NO MAM...S!!!

  • Is it me or do oriental violinists have a very mannered fussy way of performing an instrument, be it Lang Lang, YoYo Ma or our young friend here. It's almost as if they're proclaiming at the beginning of every phrase -"hey, look at how expressive I am as shown by my myriad of facial expressions!" lol

  • @winrx That . . . is one of the most ignorant things I've ever heard. lol True, some musicians like Lang Lang and Yo-Yo Ma have strange interpretations, but it is not because they aren't able to play it the traditional way (and every way in between) that everyone else chooses, they play things particular ways because they can. And music just flows from their fingertips. And to notice something like that in "oriental" violinists alone is clearly a prejudice of yours. ^_^

  • @Tokgabi Everyone of us has prejudice. We just don't treat everyone the same. Do you treat the stranger in the street the same way you treat your mom? As Lang Lang has his goofy way of playing piano is a fact (when you compare him to other pianist) and winrx is just pointing that out. Chen is also rocking too much while playing, trying to mimic adult's passion. These mannerism is distracting to watch and instructors would not encourage it in students. Last I don't know winrx to begin with.

  • @winrx The chings are expressing their imperial ego, could not wait more than a second to tell the world that they should be the race to rule the Earth.

  • @winrx Lang Lang actually look like a goofy pig whenever he plays the piano. However he thinks he look handsome. That make me sick.

  • holy! this is amazing!!! so this is what i am hoping to achieve, but it's seemingly impossible :P wow. you are extremely talented!

  • I personally think that, regardless of the ignorance of the people in the public who clapped, what should be pointed out is the smile of Mindy, somewhat connivently, like, you know...being flattered, or perhaps, noticing the people's ignorance xD Anyway, it was cute xD

  • How beautiful! Mindy makes a violin sound how it should.

  • amazing

  • i just finished this.

make sure you have a solid decres and cresc.

    other than that, good performance!

i love your left hand vibrato, and you have a very spacious left hand too!

  • wat tha hell i cant even play that good and im in the honor advanced class

  • 1:31 is my favorite part.

  • An unstable sound.

  • No words for it. I play for 8 years but NEVER that I can play this!

  • 1:04

  • OMG :D:D I'd shoot'em.

  • Learning how to play this on the xylophone and it is kicking my but. Girl deserves her props!

  • :o wow....i can't even play close to that! lol i wonder how long she's been playing, because that's amazing!

  • More and more good violinist incarnate again and again (some of them like Asia somehow), so there are quite increasing numbers of them nowadays. Every child can play the most difficult pieces and it becomes nothing special. They also play the same pieces again and again and sometimes I ask myself whether I really want to listen to Tchaikowski, Brahms, Paganini etc. violin concertos for the 1000+1 times ...

  • The idiots in the audience who like to clap in the middle of the performance have obviously never heard this before! Seriously, though, I don't think any of the great concertos ever get old.

  • She play not to bad can I say godo for young girl. But It's Paganini should be each note's with horror and agressive.

  • poor spectators, sorry. she fits for carnegy hall not this. gifted musician.

  • wow

  • personally, i think she palyed it out a bit. don't get me wrong, she is simply fantastic, but she was a tad dramatic.

  • hmm.. do you mean she is overacting maybe?

  • no, she got too into it. she was jerking around. i understand that it is enthusiasm but stil...

  • but stil... she is just a kid and acting like an adult hehehe, it look weird. maybe they're what called indigos.

  • How's her name?

  • Wow....She's amazing....simply amazing...

    and talented....hehehe...of course..

  • This girl is awesome! Fantastic intonation and a brilliant bowing arm! Easy to see why she placed at Menuhin comp last year! 5 stars!

  • she is brilliant =]

  • ... its boring

  • clap in end please!

  • Divine!

  • Oh my gosh I've never heard such a young violinist play with such conviction and feeling! This concerto is a beast So great job to whoever the performer is!

  • Wow..You're awesome! Despite the audience, you played wonderfully! -^^-

Hope to hear more of your videos in da future!

    Alexa

  • tough kid

  • LOL I did a piano workshop with Docter Vera Watanabe, the pianist, and most likely will be my teacher next semester. She is amazing! And obviously the violinist is great!

  • Great performance, keep going strong and good luck.

  • wtf? stupid audience! haha

  • i swear...how could they clap at such an unappropriate time?????

  • its not innapropiate....they heard a pause and for someone who doesnt know the end which im sure no one did, it sounds like the ending.

  • That's why I listen to things over and over before going to a concert..

    I'd be clapping every 30 seconds if I didn't.

I'd clap constantly if it wasn't a problem.

  • lol

  • Wow this is a very hard piece, and this is WONDERFUL music! She was also in Teen Strings December/January issue I believe. Kudos!

  • **Excelente!!! te felicito!!!

  • escelente!!! te felicito!!!

  • Amazing!!!!

  • wow...how old is she?

  • The opening to this concerto is played here rather impressively, musically speaking.

I don't suppose my compliments are worth very much being that no one knows me here.

However, what I'm saying is that it is special for such a young person to have this expression! This is obviously my opinion, but I also consider myself, to be exceptional in this kind of understanding of the music.

Obviously, one also cannot play with te right feeling without technical expertese too!

  • paganini would be ptoud of you ^^

  • Compliments! Nice the woman to the piano!

It is a very difficult concert!

  • waaaaaaaaaaa

  • I wish i was as good ad you =[ haha im jelous:( keep up! x

  • Indescribable! She is the top player!better than any ive heard~how i long to play like you,Mindy!~Jane,14

  • god.you're amazing.how old are you?

  • nice

  • *blinks* is anyone else scared at how high she went on that E? I mean... I considor myself a decent violinist, but... wow... she's amazing!

  • ahahaha

i do that alot of my all state music.. it gets kind of annoying at times..

how long have you been playing?

  • Oh my god, this is stunning!!!

great job!!! see you at the queen elizabeth competition!!!

  • Oh my god...this is stunning!!!

great job!!! see you at the queen elizabeth competition!

  • I think it could be a bit faster... but she plays it very clean and beautiful... great job :-)

  • magnifique!

  • Wow, that sounds wonderful!

  • how long have you been playing?

    you're amazinggg!! :D

how much do you have to practice a day to get this good anyways??

    :O.

  • i think she plays wonderfully, but the piano and the violin doesn't really sync that well

  • Wow! Amazing performance!!! She is sure to become a famous violinist. ~_~

  • For an 11 year old (now 12), this is exceptional.

Ms. Watanabe is well regarded in Utah as a teacher and accompanist.

  • Really good.

  • lol...Grand Pause threw the audience off....

  • amg! she has noo boobz O.O

  • idiot. she's 11

  • SHUT UP

    perv

  • bff!!

  • LOL at the audience...

    overall brilliant

  • congraz, your proformance in Menuhin Competition was just great!!!

if it were not four seasons, u deserved a better result......

  • my goddd. i'm older than she was at that time and you know what? i don't compare.

  • Lovely performance =) Even though i'm a pianist and i dont know much about violin, judging only from the quality of your sound and from the difficulty of this piece all i can say is Bravo! Excellent!

  • great but she probably has or had no childhood

  • jaleous?

  • wow

  • damn!

    nice.

were u like 11 at that time?

when i was 11, i was play La Folia or some shit in suzuki :)

  • Mindy! - truly you have a soul of music.

  • fabulous violinist: stupid, stupid audience

  • I can write for you any sheet music

  • Also, my favorite parts of this piece is 2:40-3:00 and 4:40-5:00. It's funny when people think it's over when your only done with half of the piece; it's happened to me too D:

  • Wow you played very wonderfully, espicially for someone your age! I'm 16 and I can't sound nearly as good as you. Great job :D

  • congrats on winning the stradivarious competition Mindy!!!!! It must have been fun actually performing on a strad. Please watch my video hopefully it will be posted soon. Sorry about those people clapping in the rest. thats happened to me so many times.

  • :D actually i didnt get to perform on a strad becuz i was too short and small at the time. :P

  • so did u perform on your violin?

  • sorry, that was kind of stupid of myself.

  • ya :( the strad's sooooo much better!!! (obviously. it cost like 3 million) 0.o

  • Baby cryin in the back has no reason to cry, performance was spectacular

  • I'm sure the baby is applauding, but couldn't stand the poop in his diaper.

  • wow!

  • lol, she does the same thing i do: when she does wide vibrato, her pinkie flaps around like an albatross

  • Harmonics in 5:07 is very well executed. Pure tone. Very good. Excellent.

  • According to Leopold Auer- the great violin teacher, Paganini's Concerto in D major(along with Vieuxtemps, Ernst and Wieniawsky's concertos)"represents the VERY MAXIMUM OF TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY"... in violin playing.

  • Bravoooo!!!!! Mindy Chen, your intonation and execution is even better than Akiko Suwanai who won First Prize at the Tchaikowsky's Violin Competion. I salute you. Really very good intonation. I will be your admirer for life.

  • Comment removed

  • the intonation is dead on.. lol

shes really good. no wonder she goes to a music conservatory

  • very musical but the intonation is off a bit

very good though whos the teacher? I think its his fault=)

  • I heard a cute girl the last week in a NHK Show... Her name is Emiry Miyamoto.. I would like to find a video of her... Do you know her?? She´s so brilliant... Wow.. I was impressed!! All above when she performed Ave María of Caccini... You must know her...

  • phoenix, if you are talking about pitch, the intonation is dead on. If you are talking dynamics, she's got that right as well. I don't know what you're hearing, but she did a beautiful job. Keep in mind this is being recording on a video camera and not professionally mixed.

  • Is she Mindy Chen?

  • sushicherry, r u a 6th grader?

  • wow so good!

  • She makes the concerto look so easy!

  • she goes to my school!!!!!!!!!

  • is she a show off? popular? she doesnt look the social type

  • you guys realise that pagg. 1 is thhe easiest of them all right... just do your flesch/galamian scales...

  • yes, we all know that

  • she's my classmate

  • Umm...your page says you're 27.

  • Beautiful!

  • This girl makes me feel like a failure at the violin.

  • Yes, me too.

  • WAAAAAAAKE UUUUUUP!!!

lol its good, but it sounds like paganini's takin a nap!!

    lmao lets get crazy :D

  • Just amazing. I never get tire of watching her play this piece. I hope you'll upload more videos soon. She's an inspiration to fellow musicians.

  • her action is beautiful

  • as long as better than me is ok..

  • Excellent Mindy. You will be the next Sarah Chang.

  • who says sarah chang was good?

  • with your same logic, Joshua Bell should be an actor too?

  • show us how u play.

  • wow, are you fucking retarded? Gee, perhaps she was INTO the music something you're not capable of because your heart is black.

  • objectively speaking, N0321 is sorta right. She is rather superficial in her motions. but at the same time, she's a child and a remarkable player. At least she's trying to get into it.

    Sounds great!

  • wow O_O

    beautiful

  • No critical remarks from me, be sure of that! Despite all the distractions, early clapping, backround baby, slightly loud backround baby-grand ... it is Still Paginini mostly Sweetly.

  • good job mindy kinda late saying this i noe but great job!

  • it's ok

    c u at school!!!!

  • Reminds me of heaven.

  • hot damn lol. Speechless.

  • wish you play at better place, lincoln center may be?

  • it 's great..

but too much rubato.. i think

  • Didn't Paganini favour lots of rubato?

  • good job but where is the cadenza ???

  • Mindy is obviously very accomplished for her age, however, I must say that her playing sounds rather tentative when compared to Sarah or Midori at their comparable ages.

  • urgh. the damn baby @ the background...

  • this is a world class performance. it obviously lacks the maturity of an older artist, but i dont think that you need to worry since as you grow older and have many more experiences to draw from. as a young artist you tend to focus more on the technicality of a piece, but it does not seem to be a problem for you. i wish you best of luck and am quite confident that i will one day see you at avery fischer hall or the kennedy center.

  • Wow - don't EVER stop playing, haha!

  • Mindy, you are performing very well

  • You are so talented! & your double stops were all perfect!!!

  • Wow, Beautiful playing. Love your performance.

    Brava!

  • OMG!! mindy you rox!!!!!!!!!! luv ya!

  • I wish I had half her technique!

  • WHHOOO! go mindy~it's ur bday~uh huh~
