  • Second, the comparison between low serotonin (which is clinically diagnosed) and the desire to get drunk is very inappropriate. I think these guys should work harder to improve their thesis if they are willing help people.

  • As a student of psychiatry, and an ex-patient, I can say that this conversation is absolutely unprofessional. The thesis are very poor and the examples they had given are absolutely incomparable. First the host has obviously briefly knowledge about antidepressants and the way they work. They don't increase the serotonin levels- especially the SSRIs (like she said).

  • Is it just me or is the woman in the center really annoying?

  • THESE DRUGS ARE KILLING PEAPLE

  • @MayorofC They're killing peaple? I was not aware of that.

  • Finally, something on Fox News that's worth watching.

  • @anebt Very interesting

  • Whats wrong with feeling better you fucking asshole?! Get another hobby!

  • i couldnt get out of bed for 2 years.. after a battle with benzos the doc finally tried cymbalta. 30mgs a day fixed me instantly. the first day i took cymbalta i felt better after a month i was cured with minor side effects (shaky hands and loss of appetite)...maybe it was all in my my mind but without cymbalta i wouldnt have gotten better, the pill made me realize im sick and not crazy...positive thinking and nutrition were impossible before the drug but were the key to making the drug work

  • @bobdacreepable welcome to the club! i completely agree

  • If a serotonin deficit is the ONLY medical cause of depression then why do ssri's many times cause the patient to become MORE depressed and even suicidal? Maybe because other neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine also play a role in mood and depression. Maybe some people are medically depressed because they have a lack of dopamine. Maybe others have a lack of serotonin or norepinephrine.Maybe there is not just ONE mental cause of depression.

  • The world is still ticking over as it always has. None of my friends have lost jobs or taken pay cuts. So i don't think there is much to be depressed about when it comes to the economy. We are a long way off from the era of the Great Depression when a huge percentage of the population were out of work but the media has a way of whipping everything up into a scare story

  • please help. i ve been prescribed fluoxetine today for generalized anxiety disorder and moderate depression, but reading the side effects it can CAUSE ANXIETY??!! WTh?? if this gets any worse im really screwed!also if it treats depression how can it worsen its simptoms like anger and suicidal thoughts? im scared of it but need to start tomorow. IMPORTANT i work with children, small babies. is it safe to still be in sole charge of them? it petrifies me i can do smt dangerous or agressive!

  • @alinecalves

they say the increased suicidal thoughts are only shown in 24 and younger, and no change in older patients. but that is what they SAY...

  • 6,7 Billion dollars from selling these products and no proof that depression derives from a chemical imbalance of serotonin. Interesting....

  • I love how the news reporter lady acts like she knows what's going on

"Blah blah blah Chemical Embalance blah blah blah"

  • @JayPull85

you act like you know how to spell chemical IMbalance... hahaha

    XD

  • @wateryone6

    Touche :)

  • click here to heal without prozac

  • I know someone who was depressed since childhood, at 32 years old started on of the ssri anti-depressent. To make a loooooooong story short, its saved this persons life literally and its been 20 years. I know this person would have commited suicide without it.......I'm just saying

  • I can't wake up in the morning without my coffee. Its not that I have a caffeine deficiency, I'm addicted to caffeine and have to work towards kicking the habit.

  • @spartacandream u gotta let go

  • These drugs are being used for depression caused by chemical imbalance - that's pretty much the gist of it whole antidepressant thing - I have never heard a drug treatment being used to defined a causation of a medical condition....may be I will watch the other parts & see if it helps me with this

  • I'm so confused listening to these people. I don't think anyone has said that ALL depression is caused by chemical imbalance. Of course antidepressants like SSRI is for chemical imbalance, that is how these drugs work, but these drugs do not make all depression - one cause at 5:37. The cause and effect is kind of messed up there to me.

  • 80% of depressed people blame societal and personal factors for their depression, rather than believing there is something "wrong" with their brains. 80% of our population probably works in food service, factories, or any manner of boring, repetitive, unfulfilling jobs in order to survive. That alone is enough cause for depression. Anti-depressants are only going to help people cope with a bad situation-not change the situation. There is probably nothing "wrong" with most people.

  • Very interesting indeed.

A discussion like this would never be allowed in Swedish television. Here they say Fox is a right-wing corporate channel.

Anyway. These pills sure isn't sugar or placebo. I think they cause low testosterone, high cortisol and lower dopamine. A sort of - zombie state in the depressed person.

  • i dont know why people want to burden their livers everyday with that baloney....i know from epxerience that theres no magic happy pill, not even diet or exercsie. i binge on carbs but the effects are very short lasting & exercsie either does nothing for me or depresses me more. i think some people are born without 'happy" chemicals b/c i know that i always behaved quite oddly, was phobic and very sensitive & ALWAYS had insomnia for life

  • I've been depressed for 8-7 years of my life i'm 20 now and it has just been getting worse i have yet to take antidepressants and i'm wondering if I should get prescribed some. This hopelessness is eating away at me and not having a job is making it worse.

  • Good job gentlemen.

  • they heva eonly recently been questioned?!?! A RADICAL IDEA?!?!?!?! Here in canada me and my friends have known that antidepressents do more harm than good for quite some time now. so are we construction workers really that far ahead of medical science??!!!??!!??!!??!!!?!?!?!

  • @eastcoaster54

unfortunately, yes you are. or you might as well be if you aren't and this common sense is looked over because of money.

  • @eastcoaster54 - A theory that is wrong is considered preferable to admitting our ignorance. Elliot Vallenstein, Ph.D.

  • Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil are NOT the top grossing drugs in the US, as they are generic and lost their patent. Atypical anti-psychotics make WAY more money.

  • These drugs should never be administered for long term treatment.

  • ahhh meant to rate 5 stars

  • thats a good drug please shut up..!!!!!!!!

  • well hey this paxil helped me when i was 20 yo

  • The vast majority of Americans that take anti depressants are not even clinically depressant. True depression means you cannot get out of bed in the morning, sleep very few hours and have no interests in anything. Most people are just feeling a little low or have a very mild form of the mood disorder, which cannot be treated by anti depressants. It is terrible that doctors are prescribing these drugs like sweets. Anti depressants have been proven to be ineffective in mild cases.

  • @piddleton If you look at the economy, you're going to need antidepressants to make you feel good.

  • @piddleton Actually they are most effective with people who do not even need them. Researchers found that people with more serious depression are rarely helped.

  • I think a lot of placebo effects. "give me a pill and i will be better"...well if you have the mentality that the pill makes things better, than it probably will make things better. i have even found that when medicine does not work, and you think "if i dont take this shit i will feel a lot better" more times than not, you feel a lot better. its kind of like an opposite placebo effect...lol. The power of the mind is amazing. I am no doctor, this is what i think and what i experience

  • This is true - but not in severe depression.

  • There is a difference between the "brain" and the "mind". Sure you can alter the chemicals of the brain, but you have to have the will power in your mind to overcome things as well. You have to combine the pill with the right mentality to fulfill desired results. being a victim of even acute anxiety and depression it's hard to overcome, you just never give up, lol its funny but i think about what Joe Dirt says, "Keep on Keeping on...Life's a Garden...Dig It"

  • What do you think the mind is? It is the result of the inner workings of the brain. If the brain is damaged people's personalities can change dramatically; many develop weird personality disorders, lose their memory, etc. Damage to the amygdala of the brain can remove will power altogether. Brain surgeons did this experiment on animals, who afterwards lost the will to eat or defend themselves. In the end they died from starvation or were eaten alive.

  • that is true you do have to have will power. but before i took antidepressants i had no will. it was strangled. i couldnt care. i wanted to but couldnt.

  • Psychiatric drugs are usually prescribed as a "solution" to a problem. But they only mask the problem and never allow the person to look at its real cause. Everyone strongly disagrees with the enforced and harmful methods employed by psychiatrists. Psychiatrists fail to mention the horrendous side effects of their drugs. They often cause irreversible damage to the brain and nervous system. These effects usually require a further drug to contain them.

  • Fox is enough to drive anyone to depression.

  • @muddy2 I agree however I don't think that's the Fox we're talking about. Murdoch's Fox etc

  • @muddy2 You are clueless about the fox networks. They are all independent.

  • This is a very biased view.

It is obvious that none of those people have actually had any form of DEPRESSION.

At least they are happy with their lives.

It must be a pretty nice planet they live on.

If you look hard enough, you will always find an "expert" who will back up your own opinion.

  • Who's view is biased?

That is a very true thing you said about being able to find an expert to back up anything you want.

There is no such thing as an objective scientist; the character structure of the person will dictate what they study and class as evidence, and what conclusions they will make of any evidence.

If someone has a lot of repressed emotions they dont want to deal with the chances are that they will believe genetic/chemical imbalance theory over an emotional trauma model.

  • well said.

i find that these reasons of repressed memories and unwanted emotions, especially in our society which is very focused on social normality, is advocating the chemical inbalance theory and pushing the 'quick fix' phenomenon which is popping SSRI and other antidepressant pills.

  • If you dont believe drugs are the answer to emotional problems check out the latest Journal Of Orgonomy, it's free, and it has an article about The Decline And Fall Of Modern Psychiatry.

Search for "JOURNAL OF ORGONOMY 41-2" in yahoo or google.

    Peace.

  • i just get the feeling that there's so many people out there who think that: "just take this pill, and no more depression".

Wow - are they in for the suprise of a lifetime!

You have to remember, that depressed people are some of the most desperate people for a quick-fix.

And when they see all the advertisment for this "miracle pills" they are more than willing to hand out their money.

If you want some real good advice, then search for kognetiv therapy.

  • You need help mate.

  • Your posts it speak for a CULT.

FOR themselves a theory are No passing fact of psychiatric belief by you.

  • I never claimed Scientology claims its a medical science. However, now that you mention it, they do claim a great deal of pseudo-scientific horseshit. BTW, keep playing with semantics regarding the word "belief", I already educated your Xenu loving ass.

  • Im ignorant?.. You obviously cant even tell from my posts the blatent fact that im arguing AGAINST the chemical and genetic theories of the cause of mental and emotional problems!...

  • Not all people who challenge the chemical imbalance hypothesis are nutjobs but a good portion of them are. Draziom is exhibit A. There are three main groups; 1.) Scientologists (Draziom) 2.) New Age nutjobs (they instinctly challenge anything considered mainstream but are convinced everything considered "alternative" can cure a wide variety of ailments (the channel Psychetruth is a good example of this type) 3.) Scientists/lay people who point to a lack of evidence. I only take 3 seriously.

  • It sure is a messy state of affairs!

The main function of the chemical imbalance and heredity theories is to prevent the social/environmental causes of emotional problems from being known and dealt with effectively. They are a perfect excuse to avoid changing anything about society; because if emotional disorders are of biological origin then nothing can be done to change the situation, accept maybe genetic manipulation or mass drugging. Optimism is not their strong point!

  • - Society does not want to be told that it is emotionally sick, and that it needs to change in a monumental way to prevent people developing emotional/mental disorders. Those theories are products of a race of beings that dose not want to face up to its fundamental faults and shortcomings.

One of the most obvious facts about grownups to a child is that they have forgotten what it is like to be a child." - Randall Jarrell

"A society is best judged by how it treats its children."

  • you obviously need some more information about depression, or experience it on your own.

Im acually amazed you would say that, afterall, it's common knowledge that drugs are NEVER the key.

Just simply a way to help yourself to help youself.

  • Ummm... I have no idea how your comment is a responding to mine. I never said drugs were a "key" but they are a useful tool.

  • I never said religion is being a science, I have no idea where you got that from. "Scientific belief" is not an oxymoron. To believe means to hold confidence in something, hence "scientific belief" would be to hold confidence in something based on science (i.e. evolution, relativity etc). Anything else?

  • No, I'm not even sure what Anonymous is. I just have a problem with religion taking aim at science. If you have a problem with a scientific belief, fine, but don't instinctly have one because your religion tells you to.

  • No. I was right wasn't I?

  • Scientologist?

  • 3) And its a vicious circle; children who havent had their needs met usually turn into parents who dont know how to meet the needs of their children and so on. Its been going on for thousands of years and its not going to change by denying whats really going on, and hiding behind chemical imbalance and genetic theories!..

  • For some reason you removed your comment but yes, Scientology has offices in the U.K.

  • Yeah sorry, I saw that you were replying to somone else, not my post so i got rid of it.

I still think that If any opposition to chemical imbalance and genetic theorys is automatically associated with those nutters then the problem is worse that I thought.

    Have they? Little buggers!..

  • These two speakers are not medically trained and sound like they don't know the difference between everyday blues and a serious clinical depression.

This discussion undermines truly suffering, clinically ill people getting appropriate treatment, which often includes medication . It is also antiscientific in reporting that "80% of people are skeptical about meds." That would probably be the 80% who've never had a true clinical depression. It's misleading. These meds save lives.

  • ecstasy! yeah

  • this makes me change my mind about taking medication. I'm diagnosed with major depression and general anxiety disorder. Should I give the meds a try?

  • If excercise, medication, and therapy don't help, then yes. The side effects suck and you could spend years waiting to find one of the dozens on the market that works for you.

It's a question of quality of life. Electroshock therapy seems pretty horrible only until you consider the even less pleasant alternatives.

  • NO! They may help for a few months, but they ALL stop working and leave you WORSE than you were before you started, even when you are still taking them. When you try to stop it is worse.

Also SSRI's double your risk of type II diabetes. Almost all of them cause serious weight gain (>10-20 lbs. or more).

My advice is to find a DOCTOR who will focus on diet and healthy living instead. One will help you find more healthy ways of dealing with your problems, than taking drugs.

  • I just love Vilift, i really feel good when i have it and i love the energy.

  • People who've never suffered from depression have absolutely no right to talk about depression in such a negative way. They're slagging it off as to suggest it isn't mental disease. Take your surveys and shove them up your ass, Doc. It's a disease. It run biologically in my family. They've got no idea. I've suffered from depression and social anxiety for 7 years. Took Zoloft, after 5 weeks I was happier and less anxious than I've ever been. A Ph.D and a rant isn't going to sway my results.

  • Depression is not just "being sad" I've been suffering from depression for 13 years I am 21 years old. When I was a child I would get so upset I would sit in my room by myself crying and pulling out my hair in the fetal position I feel physical pain I have spent weeks in my house because of my anxiety. I have done everything besides take pills. I'm about to try it out as my last stitch effort at trying to live a normal life.

  • the doctors mention that many of the people who take these anti-depressants stop taking them after 4 weeks. I wished he would have discussed why that is.

  • Probly becuz they make u feel crazier then u already do !!

  • Doctors Serve As Middleman Pushers by Evelyn J. Pringle

  • Ganja is the best med.

  • some think ganj pushes depression, im not agreeing just thought i would mention it

  • FUCK THAT FOX NEWS WHORE!!!

  • The initial sensitizing event is what is treated by hypnotherapy, age regression therapy find out why the depressions started instead of covering it up with drugs. Think outside the box and stop believeing your TV and the drug companies, hypnotherapy is the real answer.

  • Hypnotherapy is AN answer. If not used properly it won't work or even make things worse (specifically, it takes repetition and care as to environmental factors).

  • hypnosis has been proven to be the safest method of treatment for many psy related problems and only uncertified hypnotist use repetition or the direct drive technique. The new generation of hypnotists are age regression trained and can help much more than you appear to be able to understand. Have you tried hypnosis for anything and is that why you condemed it so quickly?

  • excellent debate...2 people on the same side and 1 person who doesn't have a clue about anything..

  • because i choose to enhance myself mentally and spirtually without a pill that hurts you even more/ why do ppl get depressed? either a tradgedy or there insecure pp

  • dude. i take Zoloft and i'm still pretty depressed. the medicine doesn't work...

  • Depression is really a thought inbalance. Thoughts create the chemicals that cause emotions, in my view.

  • depression is real, but i can understand why people dont beleive or question that its real, because theyve never experienced the disease, maybe the emotion or mood, but not the disease

  • L-Tryptophan+Vitamin B & C = SEROTONIN!!! It's not rocket science. It's all about the money.

  • then taking a pill that can hurt you so much when your off it, and when your on it, its just different your not you anymore you really honestly most ppl dont need it but think they do just like they make up things in there head, i know all this cuz i been through these problems and i got better by getting out there taking action and always telling my self lifes to short not to enjoy and take advantage of what we want

  • the reason ppl have anxiety and depression most of the time sweat the small stuff and EVERYTHING IS SMALL! they make things up in there head there afraid socially, afraid of change, taking risks, fear of being judged, not satisfied with where they are so they settle in comfort zones... get out there take action in your lives take advantage of life its too short not too and enjoy it. Exercise helps alot, enhancing your spirit going to church w.e it is, yoga meditation, these things are all better

  • You have no idea what you're talking about.

  • No one should take medication if it's not needed. However, depression itself has a high mortality rate, from suicide, heart problems, diabetes, etc. It is always a cost benefit analysis. The medications are not addictive either. This kind of misleading programming scares the very people who most may need medication. I agree that the drug companies put a lot of hype out there, and I blame congress for allowing them to advertise. Meds are between you and your MD, no need for propaganda.

  • This is so misleading. Exercise creates chemicals which are essentially antidepressant. That's great for mild depression. Very depressed people don't have the energy to exercise, or eat, or bathe. Maybe if insurance paid for therapy, meds would be less used.

  • They would have a lot of trouble finding MD's to say that even though it's basically accurate. I wonder what Dr. Peter Kramer would say? Very impressive looking guy who manages to sell a lot of books like "Listening To Prozac" and still insist he's not pushing Prozac. All he does in the book is claim that Prozac makes a small minority smarter & they don't even have to be depressed. SMARTER? Damn, get the prescription pad out & get me some. Anyone who questions Prozac needs Prozac, right?
  • These drugs are horrible. They screw up your brain so your brain learns to depend on these drugs and does not naturally produce the chemicals you need. SO when you try to get off the drugs when you feel better you end up feeling horrible and for a long time.

  • Fuck you man, are vitamins horrible too? Are anti-viral drugs horrible? How can something that makes people who are suffering feel better be horrible? These drugs don't screw up your brain like a bullet does, which is the alternative for many. My body doesn't process food properly and as a result my brain that require that food suffers. Its not curable, so i either suffer or take pills to cope. If you don't like it, fine. I don't give a rats ass. I don't take them for you.

  • "These drugs don't screw up your brain like a bullet does, which is the alternative for many."

    Amen, guy.

Unless you've been there, you can't know.

  • can the affects of these drugs be permanent?

  • If i crush up the lexapro will it work any better

  • I can tell you right now, that these drugs when prescribed correctly are life savers. And I would challenge anybody to the contrary.

  • when I take prozac i definetly feel the difference. Is a blast of energy, and is almost uncontrollable at times, but is much better than being down and mellow.

  • thats because most so called antidepressants are amphetamin like

  • I took Lexapro for 5 days, and I almost died. I couldn't urinate, was sweating urine, shivering and sweating, I had excruciating stomach pains, I lost 10 pounds (and my bmi was already 18.5), and my bones became extremely fragile (to the point where a small jump would hurt my leg bones), and I became very dizzy and tired. All this happened considering I'm only 18.

  • Most of the time, when young kids are prescribed these medications for depression and anxiety, it's really just puberty wreaking havoc on their body. I've been there. I've been on Lithium, Depakote, Paxil, Zyprexa, Zoloft and others in my life and I'm only 21. Now I am off of all my medications and I am fine, outside of the permanent memory loss from my intake of the chemicals during a time that my body was developing. Pot does much more than pills ever can.

  • Do you mean that weed does more "harm" (notice the quotations, because I don't believe it does any harm) or do you mean that weed works better as a cure for depression or for changing mood?

  • much better. I am always depressed and have been looking for more effective ways to treat it. The only 2 treatments ive come to are Sunshine and Cannabis. Cannabis is only useful during nighttime though when theres a lack of sunshine. Otherwise, just fresh air and sunlight can do wonders for depression

  • What about complex mind diseases like Autism or complex fear disorder like post traumatic stress disorder?. I think in some cases medication like SSRI can help.

I hope in the future there will be better cures for these complex diseases.

  • I'd look up the word disease in an encyclopedia and then see if the word applies to so called mental disorders. Hint:

"A disease is an abnormal condition of an organism that impairs bodily functions, associated with specific symptoms and signs"

Mental 'disorder' is diagnosed on subjective evidence available to a clinician. Disease is diagnosed on objective evidence e.g. X-ray.

Mental illness is not a disease. Until anyone proves otherwise, I should be referred to as mental distress.

  • How many times have we seen an advertisement for a fast food place like Mc D's of Burger King, they show you a pic of this hurge burger and it looks great, then when you go there and order it, it isn't quite what you expected...it's not as big and tasty looking as it was in the ad....THATS LIFE! Advertisting companies however have never said "depression is caused by low serotonin" as these guys are saying...they say it may be liked to or something along those lines.

  • Advertisers companies know nothing about depression. Dollars, yes.

  • Check out the lexapro site. According to Forest Laboratories, the manufacturer,

"Whatever the circumstances, depression is caused by an imbalance of certain chemicals in the brain."

  • An update to the original article that they are talking about, including reaction from psychiatrists and drug companies, is available full-text and open access. You tube won't let me post the link. Just do a google search of- "chemical imbalance" media - and it will come up.

It was just published in the journal "Society" (springer publisher) and provides a lot more information on this topic!

  • I will be sure to watch it

  • I think the entire concept that these men are suggesting is absurd. They are trying to make the psychiatric community and the FDA look incompetent. Of course not everyone needs to take medication to combat depression however, it a medically proven fact that low serotonin levels are a major contributor in depression. These medications have been tested and tested and tested again and have been proven to be of significant help in the treatment of depression.

  • If low serotonin is the only cause of your depression, then you will have better luck with meds. If your depression is caused by several factors, then meds probably won't be effective. If meds don't work, they not only don't help depression, they cause uncomfortable side effects. I wouldn't call the FDA incompetent, necessarily, but the current crop of meds is not as helpful as the big companies claim or want them to be.

  • Low serotonin isn't the only cause for depression. It is however a major factor in patients who are clinically depressed or have other psychological disorders such as bi-polar d/o. It is often a matter of trial and error to find the right kind of med too. Every individual responds to each med differently.Yes meds can and often do cause unpleasent side effects, but it is up to the patient to decide if the benifits of the drug outweigh the side effects

  • The bottom line is...medication is intended to be used as a tool in assisting the treatment process, not as a cure. There is no magic pill that is going to make depressed people all better! And people have a tendency to think that jsut because they are feeling sad they are depressed.Everyone gets sad or depressed now and then, that is part of life, but not everyone needs to take medication for it.

  • Not sure what any of that long litany has to do with the fact that meds are ineffective in at least half or more of the people who take them. Do you make money off the marketing and sale of these meds?

  • Americans need to be educated consumers and take care of themselves and not let chemicals enter their bodies at ANY time without knowing at least the basics of the chemistry that's going to effect them, and understand what it's going to do to them. I don't take meds for every damn thing that's wrong with me. Sometimes it's just as simple as drinking a few extra glasses of water that day, eating fruit instead of my usual crappy diet... that's all.

  • Getting down to a real basic level - when nebulous solutions and answers become complex, are these typically correct? If a particular psychiatric disorder was FACTUALLY proven to exist with either a blood or other such laboratory examination (e.g. lowered serotonin levels), that particular disorder would no longer be relegated to or belong to psychiatric evaluation. It would fall in the realm of biology, physiology or perhaps neurology -- the results would be psychiatrists losing money.

  • Eliminate problems sorry*.

  • It sounds like the Psychoneurolobiogical discipline of psychology has been prioritised over the other 4 schools of psychology.

    I agree with this video.

A lot of problems are due to circumstancial or pscho-dynamic. Mere councelling and a good diet and change in lifestyle can elleviate problems.

  • Bravo Gentlemen! Right on the Mark! People need to take charge of the their own health care and research this before letting docs put them on meds. Depression and anxiety disorders are properly treated by a comprehensive treatment plan which rightly includes: nutrition, exercise, relaxation (meditation); cognitive behavior modification and possibly individual or group psychotherapy.

  • 1.mcamour says

Even though medical experts may identify symptoms and suggest 'cures' for 'depression', they definitely do not have all of the answers. It is good that they want to help, but they really need to try to understand the reasons to why people feel this way. This means to analyse the person's history and the person's stance on life. A lot of the time,

'depressed' people understand many concepts in the world that are beneath the surface.

  • 2.mcamour says

They struggle with accepting these truths amongst the consumerist society of today. Because there are still so many injustices in the world today, due to people not seeing past differences, there is still a certain fear that pervades. This fear of what is unknown and misunderstood, ruins our chances to see each other as we are: humans. You can put a whole lot of babies from different races, religions, socio-economic backgrounds,

  • 3.mcamour says

sexualities(which may or may not be formed properly yet) etc in a room together, and you can be sure that they will get along! They will love each other regardless! We can learn a lot from babies, who see past the differences! There is a mutual equality, that when experienced, is the real beauty, which goes beyond depression. It unifies and makes people feel alive. Depression is the loss of meaningfulness of this simple beauty, of this simple love in life...

  • 4.mcamour says

Love is the answer... Trust... Light is made up of a spectrum of colours. There is such a diverse range of people out there. We need to realize our interdependence. We need to realize that each soul is important and doesn't choose to be born into the place that they are born in, let alone their race, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic background, abilities etc.

  • 5.mcamour says

We need to be grateful for what we have and to help to equalize the world. We are all humans. We want to be appreciated and loved. Yes, life is hard.

  • He says, "If you had something wrong with your brain, why would it help to exercise?"

    Uh, because exercise increases Serotonin.

There were a lot of frustrating things throughout this interview; things that they twisted in a way that could have been a lot more helpful if they would have presented them more accurately.

  • Some people get better on these drugs, some do not. How is this any different from other types of drugs?

  • Looking forward to your future posts from HELL!!

  • the serotonin theory of antidepressants is actually based on completely anecdotal evidence and has never been verified through clinical trials to be significantly more effective than a placebo..talk about science-this ain't it! the reason this ludricous situation continues is that the top 10 multi-billion dollar making drugs for pharmaceuticals are serotonin antidepressants!

  • I agree with you completley. As a former drug user of many illegal drugs. Having come of them made myself clean but now i am suffering with severe depression and taking medication namely, Citalopram which gives me the same feeling as the illegal drugs i used to take but not as strong..and i feel like they work but artificially..i fear what the efffect will be if i ever come of these. i dont want to relapse!!!!

  • Please don't go on about things you appear to know nothing about. You actually sound like brainwashed scientologist.

  • OMFG!!! why are they talking! if the drugs make you feel better then they work! these guys never used them thats why theyre questioning

  • He is an osteopath. Wake up.

  • fuck the Prozac and cipramil and all that shit......!!!!!!!

  • I agree with them that you shouldn't oversimplify the causes of depression and yes, in case of a "lighter" depression psychotherapy alone might sometimes be preferable over antidepressants. However in a large American study on more severely depressed patients medication was shown effective in 70% of subjects whereas psychotherapy reached 40-50% and placebo 10-20%.

  • Furthermore, even though 40-85% (depending on the study) of people who commit suicide are considered depressed only 18% (in a Swedish study on 5281 suicides) where found to have antidepressants in their blood, i.e. medication saves lives!

  • And maybe most important; serotonin medication like Prozac or Zoloft does not cause addiction and does not affect mood on non-depressed subjects as claimed in this video! Have you ever heard of anyone selling Prozac on the street or seen the Zoloft junkies in the back alleys? No, because they are of no use to you unless you're depressed.

  • As the result of a class action lawsuit against GSK, parents who bought Paxil or Paxil(CR) for their child are entitled to the money they spent on the drug. Please see my video or go to paxilpayback (dot) org for more information.

  • how about zoloft? it causes PSSD

  • american theory I say psychiatry that is

  • (part 1a) Bloody Hell - do the American Nation (including these so-called 'experts') not understand the difference between CAUSE and EFFECT? Yes, the 'triggers', the 'inputs' that cause CLINICAL depression is not the body suddenly deciding it doesn't want to produce seratonin anymore; rather it is pounding the Limbic System over a period of time with the stress and crap that life entails.

  • (part 1b) It is bleedin' obvious that response to stress etc. is about an individual's behaviour and thought patterns; and clearly also about the type of life they lead, the choices they make. So - yes - these are the 'causes' that drive the body into a depressive state.

  • (part 2) BUT - that resulting depressive state exists by virtue of a malfunctioning Limbic system, of which one of the key traits is disruption to seratonin levels (and other things too - it is right to say that 'seratonin is the problem' is too simplistic).

Treating seratonin/other disruption medically is the right thing to do because the manifestation of this disruption (i.e. the visible effects encountered) can be

  • (part 3) can be devastating (suicidal, loss of appetite, no sleep) and self-fulfilling (i.e. the limbic system doesn't get chance to heal). But treating the EFFECTS medically doesn't address the CAUSE and therefore you never fully cure 'the problem'. Treating the cause with pscyhotherapy, counselling, CBT, changes in lifestyle and attitude (and you could argue exercise fits in here) is ALSO the right thing to do once a sufferer is starting to get back on their feet.

  • (part 4) So - in effect all these guys are saying is: The Drugs and Drug companies only treat the effect, not the cause. You need to do other things to treat the cause...

WELL DUH!!!! YES... THEY ARE DRUG COMPANIES.. THEY MAKE MONEY FROM DRUGS... WHY WOULD THEY WANT TO TREAT THE CAUSE AND SELL FEWER DRUGS???

Do we really need these 'experts' to tell us that?

  • I wanted tok now what I might b etakeing so i looked on here, but I feel like im in a different category, I have been evaulated by a phychiatric professional and this is what he prescribed me.
