This song is just as important today as the day it was written. Different wars, but George "W" Bush was remotely involved in both. Their was first Vietnam where him, and Dan Quayle were both given cushy positions in the National Guard to avoid the draft, and then it was the 2nd Gulf war where once again he watched others send their sons off to war.
I just can't listen to this song without shouting out F U George Bush !! John Fogerty has written lots of good songs, but this 1 is in Video Games!
Now this would be great to hear in an ACDC version - I'm just imagining Bon Scott singing and Phil Rudd on the drums Angus and Malcolm doing their thing ...
@dockaiser i have to disagree. ACDC is real good, but this isnt their style of music, so in my opinion their version would be horrible, simply because they are heavier rock than this.
He is that drummer, yes. Kenny Aronoff. Bestknown for playing Mellencamp´s best albums.
Guys, I just saw this Fogerty an hour ago here in Madrid, Spain, (with Aronoff in the band) and just to say the guy ROCKS!!! Full house blasted.... This man was born Rock and Roll!!! 64 years old and that energy!!!! Do not miss him if he goes to your countries.
Kenny Aronoff is one of the premier drummers alive. John Fogerty is an outstanding guitar player, lest anyone think he's weak in that area. He uses all his fingers, something not a lot of guitar players can do. This guy just gets better with age. Try reading Bad Moon rising by Hank Bordowitz. Creedence is really one of rock's saddest stories. A great group of guys who made it, lost it, and are making it back, though in different directions.
@emamdom Sure, but none plays CCR songs in the original way like Doug Clifford, same with Stu Cook, none plays CCR songs on bass in the original way like him, also with John (not with vocals, but the lyrics are actually correct) at lead guitar! :D
I play guitar. I'm in a band. You don't need a guitar to play bass. That's what the bass player is for. In this case, the guy on the left. Apparently, you're the one who knows little.
I'm sorry, but having two supporting guitarists is absolutely embarrassing. Can John play or not? If he can, why does he need two backups? And if he can't, which I know is false, why does he have the guitar on in the first place?
Obviously you don't know much about guitarists and bands. He needs two "backups", as you call them, because while John is playing lead, one "backup" is playing rhythm and the other is playing bass. He can't do all three at the same time.
the same reason you will always multiply guitar tracks in the studio. for a solid wall of sound.
i would criticize this performance on the vocals. i love this song and fogerty's rendition of it. but only the early recording moves me...so much guts and grit and heart. this one is phoned in a bit. or he cant belt it out that night or anymore.
It's ridiculous...somehow, in seemingly every goddamn youtube video, SOMEONE just has to say something about nazi this or politics that. Can't anyone just enjoy themselves? Shit.
Ace song - B-side of "Down on the Corner" wasn't it here in GB with both sides charting in the US as the charts depended on which side of the single was requested when buying.
I listened to this song while I watched a black U.S. Army staff car pulling up to my neighbor's house during the spring of 1969. Next day, I found out that their son had been killed in action in Viet Nam. It's burned into my memory. The lesson I suppose after a lifetime in the military myself is to choose your battles wisely. The price is the blood of our youth.
Oh yeah, and not one that the US feels completely free to ignore at the cost of the rest of the world.
To the US I love your sons, Springsteen and Vedder are beloved men in my house. But your stars have grown dim and those stripes are crooked.
It has everything to do with black gold and very little to do with justice. Why don't you oust that idiot, level the stripes and let the stars shine again.
What would be **!king rude? Another American president hijacking a brilliant protest song and using it to promote his own selfish agenda on his electoral campaign. Born in the USA springs to mind. There should be some universal law against that kinda crap.
This was on Letterman song rocks message is stone dead true.Bush commits thousands to their graves and had no commitment of his own. He's a blowhard cheerleader that wouldn't make an average J.V.Cheer squad today.God have mercy on us all.For the Evil that these men and women (Rice) commit in the name of the "Prince Of Peace".
This was and is a great tune and I remember the show. John blew the roof off of the house!
As far as President Bush goes, John only wrote this tune to sell records. He used the Vietnam era sentiment to push his sales and thus,he got what he wanted. This country is a mess and Bush is cleaning it up.I am Libertarian. I am as anti war as one can get. Given a choice of kicking ass in Iraq or having the war come to OUR soil, I see it Bush's way.
You are unfourtuneatly Parroting the misinformation and propaganda doled out by the neo-facist's that are following the Third Reich's playbook right down to the fear they preach of the Nameless faceless WAR ON TERROR
Please John has more integrity and soul than any of the souless bastards that manipulated this country into a war to stop the EURO from being the standard for world trade.Think why would a Country (U.S.) commit to a three trillion dollar MISTAKE? Democracy in IraQ?
Third Reich? I think you are the one who is mistaken, friend. The Nazi Party was on the liberal left. I am so right wing that the KKK refuses to recognize me. Sure John has soul, you are preaching to the converted on that one.He has soul enough to sell records and that's no insult! The guy ain't political, he is in a place where he can write songs about politics rather than being proactive. See Jackson Browne for actually having concern about world events. John is care free.
LOL. Your culture is based on greed and the exploitation of those less fortunate where as the reich was based on a culture of order, discipline and self sacrifice... something americans (and most of my generation) will never understand.
This is the orginal version. Great song. Best anti-war song to come out of Vietnam (although Fogerty's "Who'll Stop the Rain" ain't bad, either.) and also just great rock & roll. This song should be played long and loud now. Bush is the ultimate Fortunate Son.

Why do i get a feeling that this song kinda gave Mick Jagger the concept or rather the rhythm for "Sympathy for the devil" !!!
erbiaman 2 years ago
@erbiaman Sympathy for the Devil was 1968. Fortunate Son was 1969...
bklyninstmuseum 2 years ago
But still ... I think Jagger was sneaking around the place where CCR jammed and stole the rhythm ... Later CCR came with Fortunate Son!

my bad, i didnt see that guy over on the right.
but its the late show, so its probably part fogherty's band and part late show band, right?
thats all it is. if he is on tour, im sure he uses just one "backup".
my bad before though, i really only caught a glimpse of that other guy this time, like they were hiding him or somthing
